In this video, Greg mills a HUGE log by himself (including turning it - well, with some help from the skidsteer). This log is even bigger than our previous video where Greg milled our first post for our barn build:
• Milling A HUGE Post //...
This perfect log yielded two huge timbers (posts for the barn) - both, 6x10x22 , plus quite a bit of other lumber! We are pretty impressed and so happy with how much lumber is coming from these doug fir logs.
Did you know we are building a barn?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
***If you haven't checked out our Sawmill Cover Build from the beginning, definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project (we still need to enclose the shed part of our sawmill cover) so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build. We are building a barn using ‪@BarnGeek‬ plans and will be sharing more of that soon!
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are building:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Me, too! It has made such a difference. We’ve had a lot of rain this winter and the cover has made it so much nicer. It will be great for the summer, as well! 😁

That’s a great idea! We have one scraping ice off the log from this winter, but sawdust is so cool! We need to get back into shorts…just added one of “the first post” with a pretty fun song! 😁

Thank you! It’s creative and analytical at the same time to dissect a log, mentally. It’s a fun math problem! I really like your enclosure for your sawmill head. It turned out really nice! 😊

Looking really good. You are learning to handle the big logs better and better. For sure a lot of extra boards besides the 2 - 6 x 10. Thanks for the video

We’ve missed you, Mike! Hope all is well. Thank you, I feel like I’m getting a better process for dealing with the heavy logs. I need 14 of these 6x10x22 posts, so still more to come! Thanks so much for watching! 😊

You make it look easy. I don't think most people consider how much weight there is in a log.

Greg, yes, that was a nice 'money maker' log, and it gave you some excellent big posts and other lumber. Storing the lumber on bunks will allow you to sort your material into various dimensions of lumber. You will have a nicely organized lumber yard making handy when you start building your barn. More blessings to you.

I think you should take your time and construct a winch system to save your back, etc.. for these big logs. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Looking forward to seeing the barn built. Stay safe and God bless. 🇨🇦✌️

Thank you, Doug! I agree. I haven't quite figured out what to do, but it's in the works. I don't want to hang it from the rafters, but maybe attached to the back center post... Thanks for watching! 😀

Hi Greg, Darren here, I have been following your channel for a while. I am just setting up a woodmizer LX25. Can you tell me how many inches it is from the top of your slab to the underside of your log when placed on your mill bed? Thanks, great channel by the way.

I do the same thing you do, but using a lift is painful for a single person. I've looked at adapting a log turner, mill hydraulics seem to be worth their weight in gold. Sure is expensive though...🤔

Hi! In your research have you found any that would be adaptable to Woodland Mills?
@konoctiswigwam8130

@@ourdreaminthewoodsThis is something I thought I was share with you, because I turning logs is a b!t@#, and I have had this idea to fabricate a manual log turner: traditionaltoolworks.com/images/manual-log-turner.png I have used ball bearings on C channel to create machine skates, and they can take a heavy load. The concept here is that if you had a U-shaped piece of steel, you could then add the bearings and weld it to a floor jack. Have one on each end of the log, lift it slightly, and that log should spin like a greased pig...using a peavy/cant-hook.
