Background: pink is a rock performer who has had too many shows. Too many audiences. To many drugs. By the time comfortably numb happens, he has already found out his wife had been living with another man while he has been on tour. After bringing a groupie back to his hotel room, the wall separating his mind from the real world achieves its final brick. He snaps, terrifying the groupie, destroying the hotel room, and finally sinking into a chair, with his drugs. The next morning, his manager breaks into the room, discovering an overdosed pink on his chair. Needing to get pink in shape for a show in a few hours, a doctor is called. This is where the song starts. The first part is the doctor trying to communicate with a barely alive pink, while the part starting with "there is no pain, you are receding" being pink's unintelligible responses. After the first guitar solo, the doctor comes back in, with an injection that will bring pink back to life barely enough to perform. I suggest watching the movie, and/or listening to the complete album for more complete context.

Pink Floyd is truly a magnificent band and one of the greatest. Hell if you want to listen to their albums fully it’s the best way to go through their catalogue. I saw Pink Floyd in 1994 in my home town, Birmingham. AL and when I say I was blown away! My boyfriend at the time and I were on the field on the 19th row and during the entire concert joints were being passed back and forth down entire rows. There was a line of cops a couple of rows behind us who must'ce been enjoying the concert as much as everyone else because they "saw nothing" and said nothing..shit, they probably all had a contact high lol. They had a two story high inflatable pig and the motion of the blower attached to it made it appear to be running...one of the best and most memorable concerts I've ever attended!! 🔥🔥🔥

I know you say you can't do headphones when you're doing a reaction but just try one song by yourself with headphones once after hearing the same song without. You'll get an immense difference and you'll know what people are talking about when they're asking you to use headphones. There's all kinds of sounds you don't really hear when you don't have headphones, the sound moves around your head or you might feel something sounding like a train coming at you and going to buy you with Doppler effect and all kinds of things like that. So headphones aren't an absolute must but just listen to a few other Floyd songs by yourselves with headphones and you'll understand why people are asking you to do it.

The backstory: he was horribly sick on a concert date. But he felt he must perform- his fans had spent hard earned money for the tickets. He asked the Dr. to inject him with enough meds to get him upright and perform. The Dr. did, and he did- though he had to be carried out afterwards. He had performed "comfortably numb".

This song is from the album "The Wall" which is a rock opera and, as such, should be heard in its entirety start to finish to truly understand the message (both of the song and the album). The story centers around the life of a character named "Pink" who grows up to be a rock star. During his life, Pink builds a metaphorical wall around himself, isolating himself from others. "Comfortably Numb" involves the adult (rock star) Pink needing medical assistance to perform (thus the line _"That'll keep you going for the show"_ ).
@robertelee63

Pink Floyd was named after two North Carolina Piedmont blues musicians - Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, who had recordings in the 1950s and early 1960s.. Why a London band would choose these obscure musicians as their influences might explain the British Invasion. The founder, Syd Barrett, was a prodigy but burned his brain out on LSD in 1968. He was one on my "three great rock-n-roll tragedies of LSD - Syd, Peter Green (who founded Fleetwood Mac), and Brian Wilson". Syd left the band in 1968 and was replaced by David Gilmore. The remaining band (David, bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and keyboardist Richard Wright) floundered for a bit with progressive rock and mostly instrumental music, until Waters began writing vocals. Their four albums between 1973-1979 are maybe the best rock music of all time. Dark Side of the Moon (1973) was the longest, best selling album on the Billboard Charts for about 20 years. This song was from their album "The Wall" in 1979. It was hugely successful. I remember about 1990, that years labor day countdown ranked it as the greatest rock-n-roll song of all time, replacing the Beatle's "Hey Jude" which had held that rank for the last 10 years. Their are two singers on this song - Roger sings the more course lyrics in the verses. David sings the more smooth lyrics in the chorus. David and Roger had a nasty failing-out in the 80s. David, Nick, and Richard continued to make other PF albums, but nothing surpassed 1979's "The Wall"

The reason why Pink Floyd is so different with headphones is that they use a lot of stereo panning in their mastering. Sometimes it's vocals all on the left and music all on the right, sometimes it's guitar soloed in one ear and everything else in the other... sometimes it's sounds dancing back and forth from side to side. It really is a different (and better) experience.

The song Comfortably Numb is a song making up the bricks in the wall. From 'The Wall' album, it's a concept album telling the story of the rise & fall of 'Pink Floyd', who in the album is a person. The character Pink Floyd is taken from two different people; Roger Waters (bassist and lead songwriter) and (the founding member but had long left the band) Syd Barrett. The first half is the how Pink was wrapped in cotton wool by his mother (also recommend the song 'Mother' from the same album) due to his father dying in WW2 fighting the Nazis. Pink grows up, becomes a famous rock star then goes insane and becomes a fascist; the very thing his father died fighting. A truly genius work of art. The song 'Comfortably Numb' is Pink seeing a shrink, basically. Again, just another brick in the wall, as it were (recommend that very song also: Another Brick In The Wall parts 1,2,3).

This song is from their 2 disc album "The Wall". The album is a Rock opera, in that the songs combine to tell a story; think of each individual song as being like a chapter in a book. This song is NOT about someone being high on drugs. It's about emotional isolation. The character in the story has built a metaphorical brick wall around himself as a way of coping with the emotional scars he has suffered; each negative event in his life is a "brick" (detailed in the songs leading up to this one). Now that he has completed this "wall" he's not capable of feeling any emotion, thus he's comfortably numb, not physically, but emotionally. You have to listen to the entire album to fully understand what's going on in this song.

It's about Heroin. "Just a little pin prick" is referencing injecting heroin intravenously, "and you may feel a little sick" is in reference to your initial reaction once the heroin hits you. "That'll keep you going for the show" is in reference to a heroin addicted rock star, who is about to go on stage to perform (the show) In the Pink Floyd movie, "The Wall", which is also the name of the album that, "Comfortably Numb" is off of, when the song is played in the movie, Bob Geldoff plays the part of the strung out rock star, who needs a shot of heroin before he can go on stage and perform. I've done heroin a few times myself, so I am very familiar with what this song is all about, plus I was in the 11th grade when this song became popular, and I am very familiar with classic rock music in general. 😉 Very cool 😎 that you guys like this song. It is easily considered one of the best ever songs in rock history. Led Zeppelin's, "Stairway to Heaven" is believed by most, including Rolling Stone magazine, to be the best hard rock anthem in rock history. 😉

Early in their career Pink Floyd lost a member (Sid Barrett) to insanity due to drug usage. This experience finds its way into many of their songs. Their album Wish you Were Here is a good example. Losing Barrett was especially hard on Roger Waters, who was their primary songwriter. Comfortably numb also contains the finest guitar solo in rock history.

Pink Floyd are the greatest storytellers in Rock history. If you do continue to listen to them, just know many of their songs have long intros and they require patience. They will not disappoint if you just sit back, grab your favorite beverage and listen. PS, you will have about a thousand people tell you that you must watch the live Pulse Concert version of this song from 1994. They're not wrong.

Btw...these guys do a great live show. Look for anything from the Pink Floyd Pulse tour. They always do a huge laser lights setup that goes great with the music

Most of thier early songs, (pink floyd) aka after 1970 ish were written about Syd Barret. One of the original founders of the band. Most of those lyrics talk about Syd. It was the days of heavy drug use, AKA Comfortably numb. I'm not sayin he used em. But, the group as a whole. made an album that allmost 50 years later hasnt been beat.

This is a song about the original guitarist/singer of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett. Who struggled with mental illness and most people think it stemmed from dropping alot of LSD. He was a genius. And the real reason Pink Floyd turned into what they became. Alot of Roger Waters lyrics are inspired by Syd Barrett cause he left the band just after they had really started to be recognized. And Syd wrote almost all of their earlier songs. Piper at the Gates of Dawn was a show of Syds genius. And to alot of fans its regarded as their best album.

It sound like you can hear them perfectly fine but you're actually missing LOTS of things.. you can both have headphones, use a splitter. You definitely need to check out the live version of this song 1994, pulse

This song is about one of the band members had a fever as a child . I think it was Roger waters . It’s describing how the fever made him feel numb , There is a live version where David Bowie is doing the vocals and the solo is considers by many as the greatest live solo in rock .

You need to hear Pink Floyd songs within the context of their albums, beginning to end. They are designed for that. Although not performed as it was during the original and limited "The Wall" concerts (I was at one in Long Island), the "Pulse" concert version is very good. Roger Waters has his "The Wall" concert footage on KZfaq also.

As you continue to listen to all of Pink Floyd's songs, you will memorize them, and come to know every guitar lick, every subtle background sound, the deep meaning of the words. Age helps...Peace Dean Bros

The lyrics were written by Roger Waters the band’s bass guitarist. The lyrics were inspired by an experience Roger had when while suffering from stomach cramps and was injected with tranquilizers, prior to a concert in Philadelphia during the “In The Flesh” tour in 1977.

If you get time watch the live version at the pulse concert,in 1994 I was at the live pulse concert at Earl's court London uk and it blew my mind the light show, the whole band and of course the genius that is david gilmour's solos, you will find it incredible but if you listen to a pink floyd song a must is headphones you will hear every little detail.
