navigating the tinny through a reef passage in a big swell and bad winds with a very rough and confused ocean almost spelt disaster - few things went wrong and i got lucky to make it out in time - the ocean is a dangerous place and you really cant take it for granted - lesson learned in regards to the capabilities of my boat and rough weather - the anchor nearly killed me

This video is great example how you should NOT drive in waves on tinny! Pull cord not atached to driver!-he can fell off from a boat and drown+no life jacket LOL Unsecured Anchor-yes we see it fell off Small box on side with sizers open-soon ol later he will loose them He got lucky this time

Like your vids buddy. I’m new to your channel. I’ve been in these conditions alone as well in a 10 footer. Lucky I know how to surf and how to read and ride swells and even waves. My advice is no matter what, put on a life jacket when alone. Have flares ready, in a pocket as-well. You may stand up a bit fast to grab a rod or whatever reason you may blackout and go over. Always think of the worse case scenario and you’ll be prepared. Cheers.

I have a Quinnie 420 Wide Body Dory and regularly do solo trips. I have a ( externally foam padded) heavy duty black plastic tub fitted between the front thwart and the foredeck shelf. The tub is held down tight by two custom made bungle chord keepers. My Sarca anchor, chain and nylon anchor rope reside in the tub when under way. I have a large polystyrene ball float secured to the end of the anchor rope so that my ground tackle can never be lost. The tub is easily removed for freshwater wash down at the end of each trip. I find the tub is good cause it catches saltwater dripping off the anchor rope and any incidental sand/ mud that might come aboard with the anchor and chain. Even though I have a pull start 30hp Yammie on the back, I have a high amp-hour battery stored under the foredeck and have an oversized bilge pump ready to go in the event of sudden unwanted water ingress. Haven't had to use this for following sea related drama but have used it twice upon forgetting to screw the bungs in (lol ?).

Really should have a self inflating jacket on, but anyway, interesting story, had following seas, deckee told me he pulled the anchor clear, he didnt, instead it caught up in my prop, then bit down, and turned the boat with stern to waves. I managed to grab a filleting knife and quickly cut the rope before a big wave. Scared me though, was a bit shaky after that !

Got caught in Cockburn Sound today, when the weather came in 2 hours before predicted. Really choppy seas, it was but of a slog. Seen others booting along at a good speed and wondered if there was a better way. Can you recommend any good vids about handling boats in rough/choppy seas. I can only find US ones, which are mainly lakes, and not as choppy as cockburn sound.
