After a year of having this Fox 34 Performance mountain bike fork installed on my bike it was time to drop the review. I have been supremely satisfied with the performance of this fork and believe that it strikes a great balance of affordability and performance for the dollar.

Cool vid. That's around 100g heavier than often quoted for this fork. Also interesting that it is only 160g lighter than the 36 you weighed if I recall

OMG... I thought the dial on the top was just to fully lock out (on or off). So have always had mine completely open. The only thing I've been playing with is the rebound on the bottom (and pressure obvs). Would be so helpful to hear what you think overall setup would be for aggressive trails with pretty steep-lipped jumps???

This fork comes on a lot of bikes! I have one on my Tallboy CS. Thank you for taking time to review it! So helpful! Would you recommend any upgrades to this fork? Like MRP cartridge or Vorsprung Luftkappe?

In Norway the fox performance cost 13000kr which is around 1300$, so wouldn’t really say that it’s reasonable when you can get a rock shox ultimate for the same price

I have this one on my Genius 940, and I love it! Not as stiff and heavy as the 36, and honestly I don’t even know if I really need a 36 even at 180lbs on a good day 😅

Had a Fox 36 Performance on my prior bike, loved it but wanted to shave 1/2lb. For my riding I agree that I'm not sure a 36 is needed

How much pressure do you use on it? I have a genius 940 as a new bike last month and it is quite hard to setup the suspension balance

@@alexpulici596 as a rule of thumb I start playing with the little rubber ring on my suspensions. I start with pumping air on them then I hop on the bike and I have an attack position while leaning against a wall then carefully without compressing the suspension much I hop off the bike! If the rings are at 50% or half way up the suspensions will be too squishy for me! At 190lbs I like to see them at around 25-30% for my full suspension bike, I like them on the stiffer side

If it is in nice shape, seems good. Just get it serviced before you ride it so it will be functioning fresh

I got one finally, so what is the max rotor size for this fork? Your videos are great.

I've got a 203mm rotor on mine, but you need a different brake adapter. Stock bolts are good for a 160mm I think. That being said, a 180mm is probably fine for this fork - if you "need" a 200/203, then you probably "need" a 36/38 fox.

I have this fork in 120mm but it has 'Step cast' lowers, what version do I have, I can't find that version online, all the step cast ones are 'Factory' with the gold stations, mine are black.? 2020 or 2021 model BTW.

I think the 34 is heavier then a Pike. One thing to note is fox posted to actual weights are out to lunch.

The Pike is pretty close your right. The only one I have weighed was a 27.5 Pike RC and it was 1,846g. I figure a 29er might be 100g heavier? If so about the same. But the 36 weights considerably more. Check the Pike video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/md5olrJpl7K4fXU.html

Owning both I wouldn't agree. If you have the funds this is a much smoother and lighter form

@@Jamesthebikeguy Fair enough lol. I ride with a couple of guys, one as a bomber Z2 and one has a fox 34, and they really cant tell much difference between the two. But you have direct experience with both so I trust your opinion. $250 is quite a premium over the z2, however. Not sure there is $250 more performance there. Anyways, thanks for the response and the content, really enjoy your channel.

I can expect that if you occasionally rode someone else's bike with the other fork, you wouldn't notice too much of a difference. But that is likely true with any quality fork and not enough time to really dial in on it. I'm fortunate enough that the two bikes I have one has the bomber and the other has the 34 and riding them regularly there is definitely a difference. It gets much closer if you were comparing the bomber to a fox rhythm, as those are virtually identical with the exclusion of the rail damper that is an open bath setup.

If you get a new rear wheel I don’t see a problem. Fixies freewheels screw on the hub in the back, where a cassette will click allowing you to coast and add gears. Hope this helps🤙

Much nicer. Check my video on the Z2. The Z2 is more like a Rhythm 34 but with a slightly more basic damper. The Fox 34 Performance is a totally different chassis and much nicer damper setup

If I have this fork, can I throw a Fit4 damper in it?

That would be a waste of time and $ because the Grip damper is "better" than the older Fit 4 damper. I've ridden both, and the Grip damper in my Rythm is much more supportive through the mid-stroke than the Fit 4 in my older Factory fork.

I have the same fork on my Santa Cruz Tallboy and for my type of riding, trails not too technical it works perfect. I was wondering if anyone on this site knows whether one can replace the blue covers with black, silver or chrome ones? Thanks!

Just take them off, paint on your own to the color you like and put it back. It's easy to do.

And the Chassis is different material. The Rhythm is almost the identical fork to the Bomber Z2

float is just an OEM version of performance ?

I could be mistaken but I do not believe there is a plain "Float" version. The OEM only 34 fork is called a Rhythm 34. It uses similiar design but a different chassis and materials.

Any idea why Fox continues to use the ugly blue cap and levers on their forks? It makes no sense, especially when the fork color and decals are black and then they mismatch the whole scheme with blue caps and levers. Rock Shox for me. The red is on the bottom, where it is not really seen, I was discussing the blue on top. Thanks again!!

Rockshox still has blue on the cap, albeit smaller. Blue = compression, red = rebound. That how it is on most everything.
