This was said to be one of the biggest mistakes WED made when creating Peter Pan’s Flight 🙈
Though the Fantasyland dark rides were a hit from the beginning of Disneyland in 1955, they realized immediately that they didn’t have enough capacity. It wasn’t until the 1964 New York World’s Fair (and the prodding of Nunis, aka “Hop-a-long Capacity”) that Disney finally found methods for moving more people through an attraction per hour.
But even with many upgrades in the 1983 Fantasyland remodel, Peter Pan’s flight in Disneyland (as well as the one in Walt Disney World) still suffers from extremely low capacity. That is why the line is always so long, because it’s a slow loading, low-capacity attraction. Some have said the wait is not worth it to a 2.25-3min ride (depending on the version you are on), but for many this attraction is a must-do in the Disney parks.
There’s a significance there, in the wait. We continue to join the queue, though this ride is one of the shortest rides in duration of all the Disney attractions. Maybe it’s because the idea that we don’t have to grow up is a hope we hold close, even for two and a half minutes at a time. Or maybe we all just want to be able to fly, even for a moment, away to our own Neverlands 💜
“We were talking about what things we could use for Fantasyland in some of the rides. And we kidded about Peter Pan. ‘We could do a Peter Pan fly-through.’ While Walt was gone, Bill made a little schematic birds-eye view of where you would go, and that became the ride.” - Richard Irvine

This ride is so popular I don’t know why Disney doesn’t make an other ride with the same ride system. Theme it to Mary Poppins. There are 2 dumbos, as well as Magic Carpet so two similar rides wouldn’t be a problem.

That ride is weirdly one of the most memorable moments I have from all park visits I had as a child, even though I only rode it maybe once. I leaned over the edge and looked down, and I remember thinking "We're so high up! Wait, no we're not, but it looks like we are, so maybe we really are?" Yeah Walt never meant for it to be a museum, more like a living organism that changes and grows with time. I have no doubt he would have ripped many things out and replaced them several times over by now had he lived longer. He once said the storybookland canal boats was just a temporary little ride until they could get something better.

I keep reminding myself of that when I mourn Maelstrom but I will never forgive The Great Movie Ride being replaced with what, in my view, is a lack-luster ride (though it has a great story). It isn't a roller coaster unless it can go up and down inclines. And honestly, it was such a unique attraction that was replaced with a common attraction.

The first year Disney World was opened I got to go. To ride each ride you had to pay a certain number of tickets, but we didn't have enough money to buy a lot of them, so I savored each moment on the rides, thoroughly captivated. On the Peter Pan ride, the ship was a wonder and I didn't mind at all when it paused at the scene where Capt. Hook balanced atop the crocodile jaws. As Hook did splits, we waited. And waited. Our ship was at the top of the up and down cycle. Finally, someone came with a ladder and helped us down. As we walked through the rest of the ride and exited, we were given a long, long string of tickets, maybe even more than we started the day with! Best Disney moment in my past 50 years!

Was in line for Peter Pan's flight with my cousins + their kids for hours because it began to storm really violently and iirc there was either a severe storm or hurricane warning. Luckily we were in the part of the line where it looks like the nursery and there's a lot of interactive things. Of all of the Dark Rides Peter Pan fascinated me the most, even as a kid. I loved, LoveD, LOVED the part of the ride that flew over London at night. I’ve always loved miniature cities and built my own in the backyard with freeways, flyover interchanges, lakes, and dams. Wasn’t there a futuristic miniature city over in Tomorrowland as well? Can’t recall what exhibit it was a part of though (Monsanto? 🤷🏻‍♂️)

If they had made the ride longer, they could’ve accommodated more guests, and thus shortened the lines. A cheat back in the day when I lived in So Cal, was to go on it during the parades when all the families who would otherwise be in line were distracted. Don’t know how well that works now though.
@gaerekxenos
@gaerekxenos Ай бұрын
Not by much if there is any improvement, unfortunately. The ride itself is pretty slow, so the queue is still going to move pretty slowly due to how few people are still going to get on and off and at the rate that the ride moves
@matter9
@matter9 25 күн бұрын
A longer ride would make line wait times worse. Ride length is independent of throughput. More seats per gondola/ship thing, or more gondolas would help. A longer ride with all else being equal would make the problem worse. The only thing that would change is retrospect feelings as to whether the ride was worth the wait.

The Peter Pan queue is brutal: No shade, cramped, winding, boring, no storytelling, no distractions, ride frequently pauses due to loading/unloading trouble, lots of line-cutting, and torture for fidgety little ones (and their parents) to endure. Love the ride but I won’t attempt it if the wait is more than 30min, and that’s still crazy lopsided when comparing ride vs wait. Monsters Inc. has nearly the exact same issues.

When the area developed so much we saw it bulldozed in the early 2000 maybe 04-06. I found the bar in the 80s and it was hopping. New areas were being developed and their stories of how things were designed and built was always fascinating. Im a 57 y.o. man . I was about 12 when I went on this ride. It definitely was one of the most memorable. Also, the hotel (forget its name) off the monorail. It was a Hawaiian tiki themed hotel.

Peter Pan ride is my absolutely favorite ride in Fantasy Land and makes my top 5 rides in Disneyland... a lot of people must feel that way too cuz those lines are always a beast 😑

I’ve been to Disney World several times over the years and Peter Pan’s Flight has always been the one ride that I go on every single time. I can’t express how much I love this ride. It’s gone through changes over the years but I still love it was much today as I did over 40 years ago. They’ve gotten rid of Mickey’s house, the original Snow White ride, and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and it didn’t bother me but if Peter Pan’s Flight ever goes away I just don’t think I’d be able to ever go back.

I so vividly remember being 8 years old and getting to the park so early there was no wait on this ride so I rode three times in a row with almost no wait time. I would have kept riding but the line was building up after my third ride and my family wanted to do something else, lol.

I remember being really little and asking to go on the Peter Pan ride. When I was older I was disappointed with it because of the wait. But, he's still my favorite character.

My wife and I went to France for our honeymoon. We went to the Paris Disneyland. We bought the fast pass and we were the only ones we saw all day that had them. We skipped every line except for the one snow white ride that it wasn't available on.

Likely because it’s really expensive there 😂 my fam of 5 couldn’t afford the premier pass when we went, but I’m glad you had that fun experience for your honeymoon! 😊

Back in 1989 to 2002 as Disneyland AVP holders when tje kids wanted to go on Peter Pan we would go to there early Sunday morning as a first ride. Wait times were less than 10 minutes and usually rode it twice before going on other rides.

They did add some games on the app, with puzzles and things to scan while waiting in line to unlock physical stuff like a hidden tinkerbell. Idk if they kept it or added more, its been a while, but i do like that theyve added things to entertain during the line.

This happened to me at universal. The jaws ride had broken and it was a 45minute wait just to ride it when it was working after 5 minutes all the impatient people left. The ride was fixed in 5 minutes and we were at the front of the line! Thank you impatient people!!
