I could watch this scene over and over, lol, Gerard so so sexy in it, even as the Phantom! His raw, sensual singing voice is why Andrew Lloyd Webber chose him, I watched the 'behind the scenes' on the dvd, when he was learning to sing the songs, he's awesome.

@@jaym8094I have watched it over and over recently. Gerard Butler’s performance in this scene is great. The sexy, seductive walk, the commanding eyes are of a man sure of himself while masked and of one who thinks he has finally found the one to end his solitude. And then the hurt look, no devastated, look when he is unmasked.

I like the movie version best. In the original musical Christine is not fully aware that she is singing with the Phantom the whole time. To me this version is much more intriguing, because she is actually making a choice, and taking control of the situation. One can read it as she "playing along" to unmask the Phantom, but I like to see it as actually her offering a different ending to him. She unmasks him but not as an accusation, not as an escape, or a desperate measure. She is engaging his true self, and still caring for him. It's HIM who can't stand being unmasked. So much deeper emotions involved.
@Bettybarnes42
@Bettybarnes42 6 ай бұрын
Very much agree. Between the two of them, it's him who is horrified of his own appearance and his own past. Christine never cowers from how he looks, but the violence he perpetuates ("it's in your soul that the true distortion lies"). It gives the story much more depth. I've never understood the hate for this film, out of all the versions of POTO made, I feel it captures a deeper essence.
@Rescultir
@Rescultir 5 ай бұрын
Was she not accepting of it in the dungeons later on though? She doesn't care about his face it's him that does. She sang that part to him before the other guy showed up. I think it's fine and I also think her knowing it's him gets you more focused into that specific part of the movie because you're wondering what's going to happen which is probably why a lot of people liked this song because they were so focused on this particular scene.
@AndreaDAcunzo89
@AndreaDAcunzo89 5 ай бұрын
@@Rescultir yeah exactly! I agree, her knowing the whole time makes this scene more interesting. In the musical instead it's not clear that she knows, and her act of unmasking is much more a "gotcha!" moment, which I think is less interesting.

@@AndreaDAcunzo89 On stage, it's dependent on the blocking and the way the actress playing Christine pulls it off. Here are some different ways they might do it: A) Christine suspects it’s him at the end of his part when he turns away, and starts her part with hesitation. B) Christine realizes it's the Phantom at the end of his part when he turns away, and run away, starting her part with fear. C) Christine sings her part as anxious, then giving way to the words she sings and internalizing it, realizing she means what she says in innocent earnest D) Christine sings her part with growing desire as it “works” on her and she gives in to passionate lust E) Christine sings her part with growing confidence as she embraces the seductive power she has over him (à la Sierra Boggess’s “decided…de…cided…”). This is the kind that gets the Phantom overwhelmed the most when she’s rubbing his chest, etc. F) Christine plays the whole thing in full blissful ignorance until she actually feels his mask. Usually she might have a slight suspicion after his part but seems to forget it in the heat of her own lines. But once she feels the mask it’s immediate red flags everywhere.

Let's all be real here, Christine know she was singing with the Phantom the minute he opened his mouth. And she's totally into it. And Raoul knows it. Like, you can literally see on his face that moment of realization of "Oh crap, how the heck can I possibly compete with that?"

I really like this version so much more than even the book. The music really magnifies the emotional experiences of each character. I wish they would've included the Persian and delved into Erik's past, how after running away from home he joined the circus where he learned to sing and do magic, then working for and being targeted by two royal families. Then how he grew tired and wanted a normal life, and he was contracted to build the opera house and in the process built himself a home and many trap doors throughout.

I guess it depends on what you prefer because Ramin definitely has a better singing voice and often uses his singing voice to be seductive and mesmerizing. But Gerald uses his acting and overall presence to be seductive and mesmerizing. So I think both are great in their own way and both portray why Christine would fall for the Phantom and his alluring style.

Personally I think this is my favourite moment of the musical. It feels really like everything has built up to this moment and its going to explode in the most dramatic point (if anything this feels like the climax and the Final Lair feels like a coda to the whole show) because you have built up to this moment of caring to this relationship between Christine and the Phantom. Never heard a bad version before and that says something since the film isn't the greatest.

Gerard added a lot of charm to the character of Eric. This scene is remarkably well done - actor, director. They have painted the face of Michael Crawford for so many years, but who really cared? He (and ALW, of course) created the romantic hero, Gerard Butler made it magnificent. ALW took himself in hands after the movie to make "Love Never Dies".

Well that’s supposed to be her at her absolute heights of the piece. Up to now she was the second choice for plays by other people, this is the first time she’s performing the Phantom’s main character, meaning she’s good enough to be up to his own level. The photography should indicate that that’s her at her best and she’s in charge of making the choice of whether to join the light or darkness that are after her.

This film needs to be re-appraised now because it was not acknowledged to be as great as it is. I saw it upon its first release and was very much impressed by it. Everyone else I met seemed determined to denigrate it in comparison to the Broadway production. I loved it in 2004 and loved it even more after seeing Phantom on Broadway. This movie is stunning. Gerard Butler is the perfect Phantom. Assured as only a self-educated genius can be. While protected by his mask, he is a commanding and confident male. However, the transition from that confident male to a scared and scarred creature in Point of No Return is amazing. He is totally shattered. Emmy Rossum is also perfect. So innocent but yet she easily turns from a girl to a bewitched woman wanting to be seduced in this scene.

Bc I only see the harsh betrayal from Christine's part. Erik used mean expedients to reach his goals, but we all know that he had little choice to get near to Christine, or to ANY mortal... (Okay, the novel is different, but I'd like to be able to read Sir Webber's mind about his version.) NO MATTER WHAT, I couldn't do that. To me this scene has always been Christine (movie version) allowing her physical attraction to the Phantom let loose under the guise of going along with the play, and for a brief moment when he sings All I Ask of You, she opens her eyes and realizes she actually has true love for him too. All the while Raoul realizes that in this brief moment in time, he does not have her heart and the Phantom does and this is why he gets all teary, even a little angry (maybe at Christine?). Raoul also realizes that even if he and Christine marry, he will likely never have the physical connection the Phantom has with her in this scene.

I feel like casting Gerard Butler vocally was amazing, and visually I'm obsessed obviously, but he is a man that is HARD to make ugly... like when I finally saw his face my first thought was "THATS IT?! THAT IS WHAT IS MEANT TO STRIKE FEAR INTO OUR HEARTS?!" I truly believe that Christine loves both Phantom and Raoul. She chose Phantom in the end not to save Raoul, but bc she recognized the Phantom had never BEEN chosen, and he deserved to know what that felt like. And notice how Christine initiates both kisses with the Phantom, while shes touching his face. I truly believe that if during Music of the Night, if he HADN'T flipped out on her and instead just cried and begged her to not look at him yet, and further, just said "I'm afraid you'll never love me once you see my face." That would have given her the opportunity to see his vulnerabilities and show him that to her, that didn't matter and to HER, he was never less than just bc of his face. When I first watched this movie, i've always remembered the bit where Christine sings "No second thoughts, I've decided, decided.", her nodding her head ever so slightly at the phantom at the first "decided", almost as if saying she was picking him over Raoul. Which i thought tied into the breathless look he had when the camera switched to him (also kinda plays into the passion Christine displays afterwards and Raoul's reaction). But my brother made me doubt it, especially with this clip. I can't tell if she really nodded or it was simply the flickering light/reflection on her face that made it look like she did. Can someone confirm?

I believe that she did actually gave herself to The Phantom at the start of this song. I think you can see her ease into it more and more the thought of them two being together and at the end she was willing to be with him. So, by the end she had fully given herself over to him and I think Raoul realized everything that was going on. To me it seemed like he was going to cry in one part.

The phantom (If that's who you mean lol) usually wears a wig as part of his disguise, along with the mask. The dark hair was his wig, which was removed with the mask. (A lot of broadway shows have this shown much better, in some Christine pulls the wig and mask off together in each of her hands. One of which being Michael Crawford's, and Sarah Brightman's performance here on youtube. At the part where he sings "Christine, that's all I ask of you" she pulls both off at once, revealing the phantom's face.)

I’m sorry I’m so glad that Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway has scheduling conflicts to not do these roles. Yes Emmy could move around more, yes Gerard is deaf in one of his ears (he had surgery as a kid) and does a half decent job of singing but his acting is 100%. I just CANT imagine an alternate universe where Hugh Jackman was playing the phantom. Gerard butler knows that he didn’t sing that well he mentioned it in an interview but if I were in the room I’d tell him your acting was amazing though and it’s better that these two were less known than Hugh and Anne because it made their character seem more believable than just another Hugh Jackman movie…we alll know how terrible le mis was…this movie isn’t perfect but despite its flaws it’s still decent.

To accept someone as they truly are is rare among the ugliest of us, skeletons in the closet and all, the most unbearable and undesirable parts of ourselves that we're never going to be ready to tell anyone... Since I was little myself, I've had wet dreams, and acted according to my passion as an inventor as well. I was never innocent in my life past my egg, with my twin sister, and I've never told anyone more than all this. What's more... Is I've dreamed of the destruction of Babylon, that greedy and deadly demon, and planned to snub out the use of money for the space of practically eternity. The gold standard is not even enough for me, it all must end, all the greed and sadness of this world. So... I've already sent for it. The path has been made. And now we shall just be able to sit back, and wait for the world of Babylon to crumble before our very eyes. While those with skills have precedence in the world to come, which share them with the world, and blossom in our times of need. A new generation of thinking, and then doing, that should be the result.

So this is definitely one of my favorite songs in Phantom, but it has to be my least favorite scene, simply because it makes no fucking sense. Paingi and the Phantom look *nothing* alike, and have *very* distinct singing voices. How is it that nobody noticed that Piangi was suddenly replaced by someone who looks and sounds nothing like him? I can at least somewhat understand Christine, since she's been so deeply affected by the Phantom, either not noticing or not caring - or alternatively, expecting that someone else will step in and stop this - but seriously, once Christine removes the Phantom's mask, everyone acts as if they had absolutely no idea that it was him. Yes, I am aware that the Phantom is a ventriloquist in the original novel, but I can't recall that ever being brought up in the movie, and - crucially - the Phantom doesn't appear to be using that ability here. It's clearly the Phantom's voice that we hear throughout the entire song, not Piangi's, and not the Phantom imitating Piangi as he does in the novel.

@@user-Kix501 The book is a horror story.... I mean the walking corpse... What the hell was that? How could he sing without a nose and lips? And no corpse would be able to build a maze of mirror.... He'd have to be a super strong corpse to do that, that's for sure.... It's more of a fantasy novel. But ALW took that story and made his own version, keep that in mind. Yes, compare it to the novel of course, but the story here is a bit different and so are the characters. This movie is a more realistic version. Even in the old movies he didn't sing a single note....Why do you think he needed Christine's special voice? Webber actually chose Gerard Butler because he had more of a rock'n'roll style of singing(Butler was in a rock band). They wanted the Phantom in the movie to be more edgy.
