Soprano Diana Damrau sings 'Der Hölle Rache', the famous Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's The Magic Flute, with Dorothea Röschmann as Pamina.
Mozart wrote Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) for a suburban theatre in Vienna, the Theater auf der Wieden. He drew on the magical spectacle and earthy comedy of popular Viennese theatre. As well as being a comedy, The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ - a great opera.
David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias.

Mozart wrote it for soprano Adriana Ferrarese Del Bene who was known for raising her chin up during high notes and down when reaching for low notes. That's why this aria has a lot of high notes and low notes one after another. It was meant to make her look kinda like chicken while singing. Mozart was such a troll lol

@@angelopueyygarcia43 Actually the exact opposite. Mozart was on good terms with Josepha Hofer, and knew that her strength was in her upper register. So he wrote this piece exactly to show off her strongest points. The piece he wrote to diss someone was from Cosi fan tutte. He didn't like Adriana Ferrarese, and he knew she habitually lowered her head on low notes and lifted her head on high notes. So he wrote 'Come scoglio', for her part, with lots of high and low notes in succession, so he could see her bob her head like a chicken.

This is a masterful performance, in the excellent singing, acting, control and staging. Her acting really stuns you, and the lighting and effects make this dark, powerful, and human as her emotions go from vengeance to a mother's concern, and it's an ensemble scene as the other singers are duly stunned, and Pamina is torn. Damrau's eyes and motion are truly hypnotic. The aria is, some have said, like a bird singing; a contrast to Papageno's cheerful, hopeful bird song. Here the bird becomes a dark raptor. It's a contrast between dark and light in this glorious opera. Just magnificent.

As a pro ballet dancer in a different life, I can say that what impresses me most about this video of Diana Damrau is her movement quality. She really moves deliberately and slow to allow the audience to capture the scene with their eyes. Younger dancers and performers often move too fast. The voice is amazing, of course, but the total quality of her performance and movement make this over the top good.

@@Jao.m4 No; I hate that this story has been spread. Mozart wrote "Der Holle Rache" for his sister-in-law (Josepha Hofer), but not because he hated her, it was because he knew she could sing it well and that she loved singing extremely high difficult passages. He wrote "Come scoglio" for a woman he hated, Adriana Ferrarese del Bene, because she was known to reach her head up for high notes and dip her head low for low notes, and he wanted to see her "bob her head like a chicken." These women were not the same, and the stories aren't even related.

Andrew Jones - I could hardly wait to read the comments about this performance, which was astounding. Her grimaces and body language were La Damrau's interpretation of the character of the Queen of the Night. The entire presentation - the make up and the hair, the costume and the set, but most of all the voice. I can't imagine anyone who could perform this character as well. I would love to see a film of La Deutekom singing it. She is a very talented soprano as well.

1. Her voice is incredible 2. I didn't know she was singing German Edit: I already knew that Mozart spoke German. Before I saw this video, I only saw a 10 sec clip and I didn't understand a word she was singing. That's why I didn't know

The vengeance of Hell boils in my heart, Death and despair flame about me! If Sarastro does not through you feel The pain of death, Then you will be my daughter nevermore. Disowned may you be forever, Abandoned may you be forever, Destroyed be forever All the bonds of nature, If not through you Sarastro becomes pale! Hear, Gods of Revenge, Hear a mother's oath!
