Ut's GREAT to hear low range stuff played on a 6/4 tuba! I'm an old geezer who once played a relatively inexpensive Cerveny CC tuba, an AZACB6015MR, with .835 bore and 500mm bell, in several groups. At one Indianapolis Symphonic Band concert, a player who was filling for a missing player, before I got my tuba out, told me the missing player had told him about a guy who had a 6/4 Cerveny tuba, and was laughing it up as he told me. While he was guffawing, I got out my 6/4 Cerveny tuba and started warming up. He went silent, turned pale, then regained his composure. He did the expected embarrassed laugh. When I warmed up by playing the Arban Carnival of Venice, he became very quiet. It was a great feeling.

When I was 8 years old I could get some good low notes out of a Sousaphone. My dad was in the repair business and before the school budget cuts times were good, when school let out for the summer a truck would pull up to the house and unload and for weeks we'd have Sousaphones in the bedrooms and clarinets stacked up like firewood. Unfortunately when I bought my own Sousa circa 2000, decades of playing trombone, and later saxophone, had spoiled my childish tuba embouchure. I pick the big albatross up now and then and let the neighbors know I still have it. I've always had a thing for low instruments. I was a far better bass trombone player (or third) than I was on lead because I was lousy at high notes. Anything above a G, I was screwed and as time wore on, I'd lose the G and then the F# and F..... I took up saxophone at 40, and while I had an alto, a tenor, and even a C melody, bari became my main instrument and even now after dabbling in piano, organ, and guitar for a whole, the baritone sax is still my best instrument. Would love to have a bass sax someday.... yeah would love to have a Corvette too but let's get real....

Thats cool. A little challenging. The wild jumps ought to smooth out articulation issues nicely. Since I have recently found out (adopted at birth) that I am the great great ... grandson of Peter Easton The Pirate Admiral, I would offer the suggetion that if you just make it swing a little, borrow from a jig or hornpipe like, it won't sound like an etude anymore and if you keep a straight face you could tell people its an old sea song and they'd believe it. The low end on that horn sounds amazing and it doesn't run out of breath up high. Of course its pretty hard to go wrong with a horn that Walter built.

Why do you have a valve that keeps changing as you play
@johannbach3253
@johannbach3253 4 жыл бұрын
Choo Jun Wyng I'm assuming you're asking about the valve slide that he is repeatedly pulling and pushing in. If so, the purpose of that is to lower and raise the pitch to assist with tuning the specific valve he is pressing down
@andreasask6791
@andreasask6791 4 жыл бұрын
That is a techique used by skilled players that need more precision for the tuning, for example while playing solo and in symphonic orchestra. Not even the most expensive instruments have perfect pitching, and the more you get to know your instrument, the more you will notice that some notes are a little high or a little low. Often, you can adjust this with lip technique and air flow, but by using these tuning slides you will get a better and more precise sound.

It's simple. Open up the throat and play with huge air. Use the Rochut etudes book for trombone and play it down 2 octaves, nice and slow. Start with just a little bit at a time and then add on. Start with number 3 and work your way up, it will do the trick. Nothing can replace hard work and time spent in the problem register. Best of luck and happy tuba-ing!

The only big thing I have is a large amount of breathing, I'm playing this and something else with my college audition and I personally wouldn't breathe as often as Mr. Fenstermacher. I take in as much air as possible every time. This wouldn't be an etude where I would allow small hick-up breaths(In my opinion). Maybe I'm wrong, please tell me your thoughts.
@livingbass9617
@livingbass9617 5 жыл бұрын
andrew gambrell He’s taking quick breaths, but they are by no means small. The primary focus of Snedecor etudes is to create and sustain the biggest, most pure sound you possibly can through the tuba. Or, at least, that’s my biggest focus, and I’m pretty sure it’s also his. In this etude, that involves lots of massive, but very quick breaths. If you’re not within 2 feet of him playing, those breaths are nearly inaudible. They’re “snuck in”. Every professional player I’ve met does it the exact same way. It creates the illusion of never really stopping to take a breath to the audition committee/audience. One of many reasons that he is a professional.

Technically speaking, all tubas have intonation problems whenever you use more than one valve at a time, and usually on the open partials too. It's possible to lip everything into proper intonation, but sometimes the adjustment needed would be quite large, especially in the low register with an uncompensated instrument. Many professional players feel that they get better tone by playing everything right down the center of the slot and moving slides to adjust intonation.

Mason Guy I had a Yamaha 3 valve 3/4 tuba, it seemed as if the pedal notes and lower felt the same but it’s harder to get it in tune and or better tone, if you’re struggling with a tiny tuba try going chromatically down, that’s what I did. Starting off the day with a B1flat down to Pedal E. Then from there I go pedal E to Pedal B flat. I’m not sure what tuba you have because even an F tuba can go a step lower

Actually low E is the lowest note you can play in the primary register of a three valved tuba, but if you loosen your lips and open your jaw, you can play petal tones. The highest petal tone that can be played is Bb. It’s an octave lower than primary Bb, and goes all the way down to petal tone E. The E natural in the octave lower than the piano is the lowest note a BBb three valved tuba can play. I find it kind of frustrating though that you can’t play from low Eb to Petal tone C because I too have a 3/4 sized tuba.

As a tuba fan but woodwind player, I guess I'd have to ask why that much pitch adjustment is necessary. Now, I've watched this video about 15 times now because you're f***in awesome, I love the tune, and I love your sound. But, speaking as a bassoonist, I can say that even on my instrument, the intonation is a little more even than it would seem to be on yours based on how much movement you're making. It's clearly working for you, but is tuba that...uneven? I guess it must be. At any rate, I love listening.
@TubaTones
@TubaTones 2 жыл бұрын
He’s playing over more than 3 octaves with only 5 valves. A bassoon has what, 30 keys? Literally every single professional 6/4 C tuba player plays like this. Some might have slightly better aligned tubes that don’t need as much adjustment, but usually those tubas don’t have as good a sound as this Nirschl C tuba here.
