What is “The Plague of Fantasies”. In this video I attempt to provide a short explanation of Slavoj Žižek’s engagement with Petrarch’annotion of the plague of phantasms, Lacan’s theory of fantasy, the difference between the pervert, the obsessional neurotic, and the psychotic. And finally why the ethical imperative of capitalism is to enjoy.
Thanks for watching,
Julian

I think the pervert turns himself into the instrument of the other's enjoyment because he lacks the inner want that is a prerequisite for self-enjoyment. The pervert rarely desires or wants anything directly. Only by mediation of the other's desire does anything become valueable to him. Consequently, the perverts lack of desire turns into a desire of lack, the lack of the other. As long as the other is lacking, the pervert has a purpose and feels complete. At the point at which the pervert becomes pathological, his fantasy about the other's lack (with the bodily orifices functioning as a metaphor for this lack) is so strong that he feels it everywhere around him. This is why a flasher flashes, because he lives in the fantasy that the other really needs his phallus. We could even go so far as to say that in cases of rape it may often be the case that the perpetrator doesn't enjoy the sex directly, but enjoys it only through the fantasy that the victim really wants it. This is also what happens in prostitution. The prostitute isn't actually selling what men desire, but she is selling her own desire to men. She has to pretend like she is is the one who wants it. The most confronting and deadening question for a pervert might be "what do you want?", he simply doesn't know. Nevertheless, it is not entirely clear to me how the pervert gets out of this predicament? How does he develop a sense of autonomous desire and enjoyment?

So foolish me answering to my partner that I want what she wants was a pervert back then Hm... This doesn't sound like the good old whole truth to me. Isn't romantic Love (yes the true one, that penetrates even it's own state as being just an idea) to some degree exactly that: sharing the others desire by being part of the others desire. NOT ONLY for one's own sake, but to sacrifice oneself for filling the gap of desire the other sees filled by you although you know it's stupid and you can never fill it. Nvm love is stupid. I'm a pervert. Stay single.

@@xXSironimoXx True love between partners doesn’t exist. The only true love is self-love. And if both partners practise solid self-love their relationship will be successful. It’s never healthy to sacrifice oneself for another, atleast not as a permanent state of being.

@@DelFlo I agree that true love begins with solid selve love. But what would be the occasion for loving another person at all if you are fine loved all by yourself? Isn't the act of giving itself fulfilling? If you push it to the extreme that's unhealthy ofc. But sayin there is no true love between partners can only come from someone without a true love... Or not, I'm just frank :)

@@xXSironimoXx You would love the other person because you have so much love that you want to share it with someone. ‘True’ love then I guess always comes from a place of abundance, never from a place of scarcity or neediness.

I purchased a copy after watching this video, the first Slavoj Zizek book I've read. I found it extremely challenging; the language was so complex that I spent more time looking up words than actually reading. I stopped at page 40 because I'm unsure whether to continue or not...

Julian, in my mind you should end this video on how one might craft one's own healthy frame, in opposition to three pathological variants of imbuing meaning to life. Otherwise, you stress just paradox of sorts. But, in actuality there is healthy way to craft a frame in order to access reality...

If pervert is the one who does everything for his country isn't that quite the same thing as life lived by death drive? I'm thinking about our neighbor, Vladimir Putin. I'm also bit confused by the word "psychotic", is it used only when having psychosis ie. It wouldn't be correct to call Putin psychotic in this sense even when he identifies with his messianic destiny.

Maybe he simply has APD (authoritarian personality disorder), or another like borderline personality disorder. Which could be described as a 'psychosis'of sorts, but to be 'psychotic' is generally used interchangeably to mean psychopathic, hence my unprofessional diagnosis of APD rather than BPD.
