Hey MD Fish Tanks! I am wanting to get a small hose like you have for the sand removal / light sand clean up off the hardscape. What is the set up you are using for that? Ultimately I think it comes down to filtration capacity. A tank full of plants with a well done substrate system is completely different from a bowl with three pebbles and a softball sized goldfish. If the fish and plants are healthy and well thats what matters at the end of the day. Nice build MD.

Space is important as well. Some active fish like tetras can't be keep under 10gallon. Yes you can keep them alive, but they won't be happy to be stuck in small space

@@mellie4174 There are literally some fish who spend their entire lives in a few inches of water, streams and puddles. You offer them something like a fully planted nature 5 Gallon and they've basically hit the jackpot.

Glad you stressed all of the work that goes into setting up a nano aquarium to make it shrimp/fish safe! I’d love to see a follow-up video on maintenance and any rescaping for the bowl. Keep up the amazing work!

You do not have a problem. Please continue with the fish tanks. I was recently in the pet store near the fish and someone struck up a conversation with me before I knew it three or four other people also admitted that you all watch your channel you have inspired a lot of people to the hobby, don't quit.

Tiny fish in a nice-sized bowl in my opinion is ok. When you think about it any size aquarium is tiny compared to living in a lake, stream, or river. They are in a protected environment with no fear of predators. They have live plants, rocks, and driftwood so they feel at home and at ease. They get plenty of nutritious food. Perhaps they even get live food. What more can a little fish ask for. It's fish heaven.

Indeed. Fishy heaven. People are fine keeping a 6 inch fish in a 60 inch tank, but they freak out when you put a 1 inch fish in a 10 inch bowl cuz the Internet said fish bowls are bad.

I have almost the exact same setup in a 3 gallon low-tech cylindrical bowl. It has been up and running successfully for almost 4 years. I started with 6 carbon neocaridina shrimp, and 4 chili rasboras. I now have about 25 shrimp and the same 4 rasboras that have colored up very nicely. They are tiny, healthy fish and are thriving in their well balanced environment. I’m using a very small hob filter and the bowl is heavily planted. Consistency and stability is the key with tiny aquariums.

Thank you for doing bowl scapes! Chilli Rasboras are one of those fishes that do amazing in fully planted bowls! Once they start glowing red, they are gorgeous!

Beautiful bowl! The chili rasbora are the perfect choice of fish :) You might also consider adding a few pothos clippings at the top of the bowl. They're great natural filters, and your bowl is the perfect propagation station!

This looks really nice, and well setup to begin with. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently, and just taken the plunge into getting a 60x40 small tank. Just about to start a proper cycle for a few weeks to get it all up and running, whilst giving my koi Betta (not yet bought) the best start. :)

A big thanks to you for some inspiration from you and excellent tutorials! I have just completed my first no filter bowl scape, which came out much better than I expected it to! The plants varied a bit and I might have gone a bit too large with the wood and depth of the substrate. Your Videos have me hooked now and I can't wait to do my next one! I have a single Scarlett badis male in a 3 gallon.(planted with a small heater) I sometimes talk about it in aquarium groups and get shit on for it about how experienced keepers don't put fish in bowls. I'm showing them this video from now on.

Just curious, why are people so hung up on "goldfish in a bowl"? If you get 30 gallons bowl, by all means - put your goldfish in there! It's all about appropriate amount of space per fish. I would hate to see any fish in any vessel if there not enough space. But properly sized aquarium according to your fish is fine.

@@lindaspitsyna8663 , You must be speaking of fancy types. Standard goldfish are actually pond fish and can grow up to two feet. They require way more than just 30 gallons of water to live a nice long and healthy life, it's more like a 120 gallon for a full grown gold fish. Oranda goldfish can be put in a 30 gallon if you only have one fish and keep on top of the water changes, even then they would do much better in a 40 breeder or bigger. That's the hang up people have with goldfish in bowls.

I think you are missing the point. I was talking about general phrase "goldfish in a bowl". Why GOLDFISH? I've never met anyone who wanted to have a goldfish at all, left alone in a bowl, for the first fish.

I must be missing the point. I am not getting what your saying. I know so many people that buy goldfish to put in tiny tanks. I tried to explain to my husbands sister that she couldn't keep two gold fish, a common pleco, and a bunch of molly's all together in a ten gallon tank. She got mad at me and doesn't talk to me. I wasn't mean about it at all. I explained that the ammonia levels in the tank would reach critical levels in a matter of days.

LOVE this bowl set-up! The tiny chili Rasboras are perfect! I'm kind of diggin' the Cylinders right now for creating 'Snail Solariums' for my 'surplus' snail population. I use floating plants & epiphytes cause I'm lazy and also use just a dusting of sand as substrate. :)

Noo, Chili rasboras need a lot more space to feel comfortable!! My Chillies and Galaxy rasboras live in my 112 liter community tank (~28 gal).

I've had a 4 gal heavily-planted bowl for 6 months and up until today, it just housed shrimp and snails. I've wanted to keep chili rasboras for a while, but they can't go in my 30 gal nor in my 90 gal tanks because they'd quickly become an expensive snack for my other fish. I put 5 chili rasboras in my bowl today, and fingers crossed they'll be ok.

Amazing as always. I think the "dreaded bowl" syndrome doesn't apply here. Some may not realize that you have installed a filter to your setup.... plants !! if you look at a bog or marsh, there are areas of standing water with what appears to be the same setup. (Actually, I think you have more plant per gallon then most outdoor settings 😁). The point is, your setup is fish supportive, whereas the bowl haters have only experienced setups without biological filtration. Well done indeed !!

I don't think most people are mad about the bowl, personally I don't like putting any fish into anything less than a 5 gallon. 3 Gallons is not good enough for fish in my personal opinion.

I used to have a 60L biorbe bowl, kept Galaxy Rasbora, Chile Rasbora and Mayreh Rasbora, and Cherry shrimps. I did great until I cracked the Plastic bowl cleaning one day.

@Spaceman Spiff I whole heartedly disagree. Even for chili rasboras 3 gallons is very small, also he took up 1/2-1 gallon with substrate and plants. I don't see how anyone would think 2-2.5 gallons of water is enough for fish that have entire streams/lakes/rivers to swim in.

@@bullythebooks i think the same, its too small of a bowl for fish. Maybe snails/shrimp, but i wouldnt even do that for 2 gal in the first place... i think these animals deserve to have space to swim, hide and whatever, and small bowls and less than 5 gal tanks dont allow that.

Love it. The 6 Boraras brigittae and shrimp will be a near zero bioload, so no worries about the size of the bowl. One thing I think is missing is floating plants. For this one, some red root floaters would look awesome IMO.

New tank day today hopefully will be getting an aquaone 850 200L tank. I've already got plans to stock it with an axolotl and guppies maybe :) gonna be a busy few days collecting all the goodies for it!!

I love seeing a new bowl setup. Have you considered doing a larger one? I have a 9 gallon loaded with plants, shrimp and 5 Blushing Pearl Tetras. I'm not sure why people think bowls are bad. Perhaps they just believe old wives tales and never take the time to educate themselves on the subject.

I think it's because bowls are usually not filtered, fake plants, not even a sponge filter. Plus most fishbowls made are only a half a gallon or a gallon. This is what people imagine when they think fish bowls

I am a huge fan of fish bowls! I love learning how to make them healthier and better without electricity. Today I planted a tiny cattail (natural filter) In my one bowl. Fish bowls are little pools of life!

Beautiful, I didn't read the description, so I was hoping your fish in a bowl was going to be the chilis. Big relief on my end 🤭 What's wrong with bowls is that it's a nano tank size most of the time, lots of people dont put real plants or nano fish in them, so it doesn't work out, especially if they put a goldfish

Hey MD, great vids as always. I'm sure you are busy taking care of all those acara babies but I have a stupid question for you, how do you clean the glass on a bowl aquarium? Mines been going over a year and I'm still struggling to find an easy way to clean the glass in such a small space, normal scrapers or magnetic cleaning blocks I don't think will work on the curved glass so I'm left with getting me hand and arm in with a sponge to do it which knocks the scape all over the place, just wondering if you have any magical techniques?

I dont really get it, but if I did, I'd spot treat it with glutaraldehyde and a syringe.

@@johnduong3642 Take everything you see/watch on KZfaq with a pinch of salt. I've kept fish for years and BBA has virtually been in all my tanks at some point. There's many reasons why it appears and it's not just down to lack of Co2.

I feel like a bowl is perfect for guppy’s i don’t see an issue with a bowl and it’s perfect for office or if you have a decent size night stand help you fall asleep while watching the fish swim… I’m here for it

I wonder if there’s a different way to aquascape bowl shaped tanks because magnifies the middle of the tank. Like instead of having the focus on the foreground have the focus be the middle because it’s magnified.

First time I have set up a planted aquarium, I have been following your videos for a while now. I have a big 18 gallon biorb , that is basically just a huge bowl, I would like to do this same kind of set up only on a bigger scale. I noticed on other videos you put gravel in first, then the soil, then sand. On this one you did soil, gravel, sand. Does it make any difference if you do gravel or soil first?
