Weightlifter Naim Süleymanoğlu made his Olympic debut at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. He was quickly nicknamed "The Pocket Hercules" for the combination of his short stature (1.47m or 4ft10in) and incredible display of strength.
Born in Bulgaria to Turkish parents, Süleymanoğlu obtained Turkish citizenship in 1986 and was now representing Turkey in the weightlifting competition at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
"The Pocket Hercules" lifted 190.0kg in the clean and jerk; and 152.5kg in the snatch, reaching a total of 342.5kg. This result gave him both the Olympic gold medal and new world record, by an impressive 30kg.
Naim Süleymanoğlu would still be back at the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 to win two more Olympic gold medals and have his final Summer Games at Sydney 2000.

Do not get me wrong but in my opinion this guy is one of the most underrated athletes in history. His achievements and performances are beyond imagination. Is this video you can see recorded the most superhuman lift ever performed. He lifts x3.17 his bodyweight something that nobody has ever done or will ever do. He broke every record in featherweight since the age of 16 and would be the most decorated weightlifter if not for the Soviet Union boycott in 1984. Official records are now reset and featherweight category stands for athletes of 56kg and "lightweight" for 62kg. C&J world records are reported as 170kg and 177kg accordingly in 2016. He still smokes all those guys for over 10kg! I am grateful for having the opportunity to see these tremendous efforts. Pushing yourself forward and achieving greatness has been taken to another level since this beast set foot in the Olympic stage.

It's easier if your shorter to lift higher than your own bodyweight. If a guy weighs 80 kg and is 7'8, then this guy would only exist of bones whereas a 4'1 guy weighing 80 kg would exist mostly of muscle, who will be able to lift more than their own boy weight? The 4'1 guy. If Naim was 5'7 or 6'8 he wouldn't accomplish this

@@obuty_napiwek2454 Shorter people are still able to lift higher than their bodyweight because they have more muscle to weight ratio and don't lie muscle produces power this is why eddi hall has a lot of muscle too. He weighs 64 kg even though hes only 4'8 of muscle now if a 8'11 guy would weigh 64 kg he would have no muscle mass and be extremly skinny and not able to lift 332 kg because most of his weight is bone and muscle is the one generating Power. Shorter people have higher muscle (Strenght because muscle does generate power dont tell me otherwise) to weight ratio which makes pull ups easier and it's easier to lift more than your own weight (Like gorillas)

Used to hear about this guy when I was 10 in the late 1980s but was too young to understand how much of a legendary weightlifter he was. For some reason I never forgot his name and the following formula stuck in my mind: weightlifting = Suleymanoglu. Now I understand why. Just learned about his death. RIP Naim. @@seregill13 No, ethnicity is mostly made up. Look at the borders of countries. People 5 metres to the west from the border call themselves something different and 5 metres to the east something different. They are mostly the same. Similar culture, similar genetics. You can't even tell the difference between the two peoples if you put them side to side. Of course not every country or everyone is like this but your ethnicity can depend on you and your family.

idk... he is deff strong dont get me wrong. but u gotta realize that clean and jerk is WAY easier if ur short. in hs i could do about 2x my body weight(300 lbs at 150-155 lbs in weight) and by no means trained for it.... its super easy when ur short( im 5'10) ive seen a 140 lb 5'5 guy who was weaker than me on everything clean 335.... not press it but still. u dont have as much room to move the bar. if a tall person was cleaning and pressing 3x his own weight.... then it would be more impressive? idk at least more appreciated by others.

Short answer: motivation/right pulse Long answer: Blind Prisoner: How can you move faster than possible, fight longer than possible without the most powerful impulse of the spirit: the fear of death. (The Dark Knight Rises - 2012) Until 1984, he was just an another successfull sportsmen who wants to be more successfull. But after Bulgarian struggle with the Turks in Bulgaria, he became something else. He believed he can be the voice of something bigger than himself. He had things to say, but his voice must be very stong as much as possible. He delivered his message to the press after he escaped to Turkey, but only people in Turkey heard and it was not enough. There must be another place to talk, so the whole world must listen. But how 19 years old boy can do such a thing? Answer is, do whatever you are best of. He started working harder and harder, more medals... more world records... When the time came, he made this speech at United Nations. "You may lose your home, your job, even your loved ones, but the last thing a person can lose in his life is identity. The names of the two million Turks living in Bulgaria were changed. They were tortured and persecuted. Our only wish is to enjoy universal human rights like every citizen of the world. To live freely in the land where we were born, with our identity. If Bulgarian communist party can not provide it, let our people who live in places to return to their motherland Turkey. I, Naim SÜLEYMANOGLU, will cry out FREEDOM, FREEDOM, after every medal I have won, after every record I broke today and from now on. This is not only for the persecuted Turkish people, but for every person whose human rights have been taken away." His own voice ?v=q1v_2fW9WTI He finally made it, whole world heard him. After couple of months from this speech, Bulgarian Communist Party could not resist international pressure and allow Bulgarian Turks to return their motherland. Around 360.000 people migrate to Turkey. Technically Naim Suleymanoglu is another version of Oskar Schindler (Schindler's List - 1993)
