Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

For me, the phantom has always represented the grief over her father's death. Grief is seductive and easy to fall into. Raoul is the light and a life where she doesn't let her grief consume her. She kisses the phantom, accepts grief, and that is when he/it lets her go. I've related and been inspired by her struggle and how, in the end, she chooses not to let her sorrow overtake her. Though, I can see how her choosing the darkness would be a great story.

I think that the Phantom and Raoul symbolize our lightest and darkest attributes. Both are enticing, and both promise fulfillment be it of light or dark nature. The trouble is that the Phantom, much like our inner darkness, was never taught what love means, so he tries to gain Christine's affection through the means he knows: manipulation, deception, and in the end, he realizes when she gives in to him, he was selfish in how he loved her, so he let her go to Raoul who was promise of goodness.

but there are a lot of times in the movie where Christine really seems in love with the Phantom. are we to believe she feels that way out of attachment to the voice who guided her all those lonely years? is she fascinated with him despite her fear? even at this point in the movie, she seems in love with him, although she was part of the trap. is she faking it that well?

Does anyone else wonder what the entire score of 'Don Juan' would have sounded like. Yes, I realize it was a theatrical metaphor, but for some reason 'Past the Point of No Return' always strikes me as one of the most important pieces of 'The Phantom.' I don't know if it was just Sir Webber finally expressing his own true self to Ms. Brightman or if it was something more, but I've always wished that there was a complete version, lurking somewhere, of the whole production of 'Don Juan' somewhere.

I thought the first part of this was one most erotic scenes I had ever seen when I first saw this, and I still think so. No flaunting of bits, no overt dirty talk, just plain eroticism. Also, Raoul is a block of wood.

I really love this sung by gerard Butler, he sounds really sexy and his voice gives me goosebumps. Honestly the Phantom really wasn't supposed to be sexy hes supposed to be hideous, but still I personally love this movie to see another interpretation to the Phantom :) I am not disapointed with this movie at all.

The whole plot of this story depends on the audience believing that the Phantom's deformity is so grotesque that it caused society (even his mother!) to shun and leave him an unloved outcast. This Phantom, though, just looks like sexy Gerard Butler with a moderate facial burn. Hardly a "loathsome gargoyle".

Saw "Phantom" last summer in London - it was fabulous but I still love this movie version. Wonderful passion, beautiful music, lovely dance and oh, what a masculine hunk Gerard Butler is - I have all his movies! This film is a tour de force. Some folks on here take it too seriously! It is musical theatre, meant for entertainment, not for realism! Get real and just enjoy the talent, the sights, the sounds!

Raoul was not capable of the passion of the Phantom. And Raoul did not tell the managers how crazy they were not to cast Christine. The Phantom appreciated Christine far more than Raoul could ever have. Raoul was the safe acceptable choice.

The Phantom also had a bad childhood. His mother didn't love him because of his face and he was beaten in a circus. The Phantom's childhood influenced him in a bad way. Anyone raised like that would be bitter, and do bad things. The Phantom literally had to kill, to buy his freedom. He loved Christine. Christine and Raoul on the roof top broke his heart, but he dealt with it in a bad way. Also consider, how he only killed people who said bad things about him our did bad things to him.

@Penter2192 When he is preparing for the opera, you see him adjust the wig on his head. When he goes to see Christine he wears the black wig to cover up a lot of his ear, and he uses stage makeup and stuff to cover up the scars, and she pulls it off with the mask.

To those constantly defending the phantom with the whole "he's hotter" "he's just misunderstood" and "he loves her more than Raoul" I'd like to point this out,in the musical he's actually more disfigured then they did here (and casting Gerard Butler did not help things), but besides that he's obsessed with her to the point of making models of her and a dress, he set the opera house on fire, killed a man in cold blood, and tried to force her to stay with him by threatening the man she loves

You do realize the phantom was pretty much a homicidal maniac who was obsessed with her... The entire time she was with him all he did was manipulate her (by convincing her he was the angel of music sent by her father, or simply by trying to seduce her). I love the phantom, he's the most interesting character in the movie, but think about it. If someone did all of this to you, do you really think you would choose them over your childhood sweetheart?

I'm pretty sure, based on her expressions that Christine made the decision to pull off the mask, all by herself. The reason why Christine didn't instantly love him back was that first, she was unaware that the angel who visited her was a man as opposed to an actual angel. Next, he used her memories of her father and almost outright stated at some points that he was her father, to get her to spend time with him. Also she suffers from a case of Stockholm syndrome involving Phantom and he uses tha

The phantom and her did have a connection on an emotional level. In fleeting moments he was quite sweet, but he really messed it up by being extremely possessive and aggressive. Had the phantom not 'Messed things up', they would've been a nice couple. However, with the way things turned out in the end, Rauol was much better for her sadly.
