Today Lockstin and Josh Challenge each other to guess Pokemon based on their category. But what is a Pokemon category? a needless thing Game Freak added unnecessarily. Pokemon categories are sometimes really stupid. Why not guess along with us in the comments?

theres like pikachu and breloom in fairy and like cofagrigus and froslass in mineral, gen 3 fossils in water 3, couple things in dragon, and thats all i can think of off of the top of my head

Woobat is in the Field egg group for some reason, which was even weirder when it was called the Ground egg group. Wailord is infamously there as well.

Field is mainly for animal like Pokemon, like Arcanine and such so it makes sense for Woobat at least. WHat bothers me is the Ralts line isn't in humanlike

I love suicune, but it is all over the place . . . It is the rain, that drenched the fire in the tower . . . But otherwise the north wind which is something else entirely and at least where I live pretty much never carries rain . . .than it is the aurora pokemon and has heavy arctic symbolism that does not realy fit its origin at all, but it can purefy water whith what we are back at it beeing water and rain . . . . There mostly 3 compleatly different domaines it represents cobbled togeather

The weirdest one to me will always be the “Fairy Pokemon”, Granbull. I’m convinced they only made it Fairy type entirely because of this strange prior classification. I get that it’s supposed to be timid when faced with confrontation, but I’ll just never understand.

To be fair, it's always been in the Fairy egg group. In fact, every Pokemon that had its type changed to Fairy in Generation VI was in the Fairy egg group with the exception of the Ralts line.

Clefairy was the original, categorized straight up as a Fairy. So technically we've always had unofficially confirmed fairies but there weren't enough of them (and related moves) until gen 6 to put them in as their own type. I'm just surprised the Lake Spirit Pokemon, Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit were not changed to pure Fairy types as all their names are a play off fairy, pixie (elf), or sprit (meaning) spirit. But instead they gave knowledge and in order to be most knowledgeable would require having at least some psychic power, perhaps making them far more psychic than fairy in spite their names. Also it's cool how: eyes wide open = offense Eyes closed = Defense Eyes half open = balanced defense and offense

The reason Ledyba and Ledian are the "5 Star pokemon" is because in Gold and Silver beta they had stars on their back instead of spots

funny thing about ledian, its beta design actually had stars on it, so calling it the five star pokemon actually kinda makes sense. they were just too lazy to change the category when they changed its design.

if I'm not mistaken I believe the name Five Star pokemon also refers to the number of black spots on their backs as their spots can be refered to as stars I think.

@Gabriel Mota in What universe are you from in which Stars, actual Stars in the expanse of Space are actually shaped like the five pointed Star shape? Stars are big balls of Hot Gases so they are round just like the round spots on the back of a Lady Bug! In this example with the Lady bug its just word play though counting the spots like stars, if a Lady bug has Five spots, its a Five star Lady Bug, or if it's six spots, a six star. Also saying Star sounds better than saying Five spot. Think outside that box of yours.

I always found Quagsire's category to be totally ridiculous. Like, did someone want to call it a mudfish (since it is Water/Ground) and someone else said "no that's stupid, it swims in water" and then they decided on Water Fish? What else... Blastoise, the Shellfish Pokemon... Poliwrath still being a Tadpole... Arcanine the Legendary Pokemon... and if I'm not mistaken Nidoking and Nidoqueen are called Drill Pokemon like Rhydon, though of that I'm less certain.

Multiversal Wanderer NKX it happened to Cyndaquil. Cyndaquil is actually supposed to be more like the hedgehog Pokemon or something like that but because the Japanese word for it contains the word "mouse" it got translated as a mouse.

Bulbasaur also makes no reference to being a dinosaur or lizard in its Japanese name. So no. It’s not a dinosaur. It’s a frog. It is meant to be a frog. Not an ancient extinct frog. Just a frog. That’s according to the creators.

While in this word they're the names of animals, there they are just the names of their categories. Instead of having scientific names like we do here, they have easier categories. So instead of naming the Pokémon *we* see as cats as members of the felidae category, they changed "felidae" for "cat" and made it easier. They kind of ruined it by having like a category by Pokémon instead of categorizing every cat-like Pokémon in the same category and so on.

Are there no animals in the pokémon world though? I could swear one character in a gen. 4 game asking whether pokémon actually lay the eggs you get from the breeding centre. That implies there must be something in that world that both lays eggs and isn't a pokémon.

I think the categories are one of the only things I’d like to have retconned in Pokémon. Maybe one of the professors can show up and tell you about an announcement in the science community about redoing all the categories.

Pokémon categories always remind me of Cyndaquil, which Gamefreak insists is a "fire mouse." This contributed to the fire zodiac theory (which I think you already did a video on?). It's one of my favorites, and I'm looking forward to whether they make a second fire horse and how it might be different from Rapidash.

I really wish game freak had spent more time fleshing out the categories. There is no reason in game to even have that data. Edit: I think egg groups are a better way to classify pokemon than these categories. Even though there are plenty of those groupings that don't make sense either, at least they have a mechanical in game function. I'd have to do some research, but I suspect renaming the egg groups and classifying the pokemon according to egg group would be beneficial for breeding. Maybe we could discover some new insight into the way Pokémon are designed or something. I always got the impression that breeding was meant to be confusing and mysterious, but a big Pokémon theme is research and study. After all this time, maybe we should take a look at the game data and try to make some sense of it all.

@@wanderlustwarrior nah, four star ladybug has a flip effect that destroys all level four monsters on your opponent's side of the field. Four star ladybug is actually a level 3 monster.

The thing about ladybugs in chinese (and I'm pretty sure they have it similar in Japan) is that we call them x star ladybugs where x is how many spots are on the shell. A direct translation would then say that they 5 star pokemon whereas it likely means it has 5 spots on the shell.

It's honestly such a minor detail that it's easy to miss. So rarely talked about as well. Each pokémon does have its own description too. I barely read them myself, so many of these were news to me.

Ape-in-a-tree , kartana is loosely based on kusanagi-no-tsurugi, the grass cutting sword, grass/steel type, legendary, katana, and it's close to being styled after a samurai origami

I'm pretty sure that it wasn't leaked when this video came out, but the beta design for Ledyba had 5 stars on it, the most likely reason Ledyba and Ledian share that category.

In the Space World 1997 Pokemon Gold demo there was a ladybug Pokemon with stars on it's back. It's safe to assume that this Pokemon eventually became Ledyba and Ledian and their classification as the Five Star Pokemon is probably reminiscent of it's beta design, or they forgot to change it.
