This made my day! I am the recording engineer of this incredible show in October of 1979. I recorded to 24 track analog tape in my Artisan Mobile recording truck parked out on Flagler Street in downtown Miami. This was my second recording for the band and it was an absolute joy, unforgettable.

paolo-n2000 Thank you very much. My recording was done for the band so I have no knowledge of its whereabouts now. It seems the Old Grey Whistle Test purchased rights to a small portion for a promotional film shoot they were doing that day, which you see here. That shoot was strictly limited to a few songs, to my knowledge. No video truck was present that night so I doubt there is any additional video to what you’ve seen.

Sting used to get annoyed at him because he was a bit all over the place sometimes.. little did he know.. also it seems that inner conflict in a band is an essential ingredient that will frequently translate into pure Magic

Even drummers don’t all understand ‘groove’ which is a time element of a beat pattern, with such minuscule divisions to be virtually immeasurable, BUT… anyone can feel it. Some drummers have mastered groove and the rest should pick a different instrument. It is the reason one person can, using a single conga drum, lay down a beat so deep you cannot remain still, no matter how hard you try. Many years ago, I was guitarist and arranger in a band with a very questionable drummer, struggling thru yet another pointless rehearsal. We sounded better if he didn’t show up. A drummer acquaintance at that time - Jean Bolduc- now my closest friend in the world, stopped by to hang. Our pretend drummer left to get a beer. While he was gone Jean grabbed a cardboard box to play cajon-style just to help out as we continued work on the song. In ten minutes we had played three perfect takes, the first ever of that piece. Beer guy returned to find he’d lost his job. That’s groove.
@tomasvanecek8626
@tomasvanecek8626 6 ай бұрын
@@artysanmobile So right.. I dont know who it was.. I think Miles Davis, who said - to keep the groove, you have to have what he called "protecting the beat".. like some inner timing, subdividing the obvious beat, that timing, to what you call minuscule division.. so to the point, that I couldnt have said that better ! The best example to me is Al Jackson Jr.. just watching videos of him drumming, you see it .. and the same was Bonham
@artysanmobile
@artysanmobile 6 ай бұрын
@@tomasvanecek8626 Bonham was a legendary groove machine. In fact, drummers who have it are widely loved especially by those who know nothing about it technically. Ringo was a groover. Charlie Watts so much so that the Rolling Stones should just step down. I often thought Led Zeppelin showed tremendous restraint going in different directions. It was never going to be the same without him and they impressed the hell out of me by knowing it. I have some close friends who are legendary drummers, groove monsters. They have spoiled me forever. I’ve been super fortunate to record the greatest live throughout my career. It is the magic for every drummer - hand drums, percussion, kit. A clock that seems to run all on its own.

Stewart had also refined the use of an echo specifically on his hat to a very high level. Between my two shows with them that year were only a few months but he had stepped it way up. We had time the afternoon of this show and he was very generous sharing his method. Those who know - mostly but not exclusively drummers - recall what an essential part of the band’s sound that became, leading to the exacting use of a switch beside the heel of the pedal sending his hat mic thru his onstage echo to the hat mic channel. He worked that system masterfully in my opinion, sending just the right phrases at just the right level to syncopate with his own playing. 44 years ago, an innovator.

They screw up the beginning and then turn this into a masterpiece. The magic of how they each can be playing in their own world yet stay connected was really a high wire act. Copeland is giving a masterclass on syncopation while Andy is show us all how to NOT play like any other guitar player you’ve ever heard. Sting is being a superstar frontman with crazy charisma and drop dead rock god good looks. They were an embarrassment of riches, making all that music with three instruments. The rarest of the rare.

This band was already in the futur! And Copland was a virtuose because nobody played drums like he did before

But they didnt fade away. Sting straight up left at the prime of the police..... i think fading means they start to put out shit material after awhile then just go away do to nobody liking a band anymore.

Stuart Copeland's drumming is often overlooked, we talk about Sting and Andy but it's that sticks man who pegs all this down. This number is one of the best.

Copeland has long been lauded as one of the most innovative, original technically gifted drummers of all time.I am a drummer myself and his influence on my playing is immense, especially his hi hat work
