Ethan was my favorite for the season. He also spoke at my college for freshman orientation and was really inspiring.

I wonder if Ethan tripping so often during that first challenge was actually his muscle memory from playing pro soccer and he was actually subconsciously saving himself from worse injuries than if he hadn’t learned how to ‘fall properly’ his whole life

He laid the groundwork for jury relationships. His ability to cultivate a friendly jury rendered all of his weak suits irrelevant. It was also the key to Natalie White's victory.

Ethan was my winner pick for this season, happy to see him win, excited to see how he adapts to a modern season.

Ethan is definitely my favorite winner, he’s just so likeable.

He's not quite the most memorable contestant on this season but his presence definitely makes the season as good as it is. Very likable and very chill, he always seemed like a great guy to just hang with. He may not have been the best at strategy or the best at challenges or whatever, but he was a solid player and you really do end up rooting for him even if I was rooting for Lex to win most of the time. Very good part of a very solid season!

Wow! Seeing all this again like, 19 years later, makes me incredibly nostalgic. I adored Ethan back in the day. I hope he wins season 40, he deserves it.

Ethan is by far my favorite winner, then and now. 😊 Another player who's strategies here wouldn't work in other seasons, esp later ones, but he had such a good social game and really was a nice guy. Plus, this is honestly one of my fav seasons still. I can 100% why they never did another season like this, for so many reasons, but I loved this cast and the dynamics so much. (Never forget Clarence and the chickens. 😂👌 Iconic.)

Call me crazy, but I think Ethan beats Lex at Final Tribal if it comes down to it. Hear me out... I think Lex has Brandon on lock based on their earlier relationship. Especially if Ethan bombs his question again. Kim J picks Ethan over Lex, as she did at F3. Big Tom likely picks Ethan over Lex due to Lex grating on him too many times, which Ethan is never shown doing. Kelly is probably still mad at Lex over his witch hunt, so she likely picks Ethan. That leaves Frank, Kim P, and T-Bird, and Lex needs all of them to win. I feel safe saying Ethan could win at least one of them over.

1. Richard 2. Tina 3. Ethan Ethan really didn’t do anything that said “WOW” and just followed Lex and Tom all the way till the final 4. If it wasn’t for his relationship with Kim he wouldn’t made it to the final. The real question is would he have won if Lex and him was in the final or even Tom and him?

I'd definitely argue that Lex was the best player of the season

Ethan was a do-nothing.

Ethan is the first popular winner because he's the first straight white male hero archetype. Hatch is gay and a villain and Tina is a hero but a woman. Rudy and Colby were favoured because they were the straight white male hero archetype of seasons 1 and 2 respectively. And there was no popular winner again til Tom Westman, as again, the straight white male hero archetype. The winners in between were women (Amber, Sandra, Jenna and in Vecepia's case also black) or straight white male villains (Brian and Chris D). I'd go so far as to say that Thailand and Amazon were less popular as there was no straight white male hero archetype edit for audiences to cheer for (even though Amazon is a great season). After Tom Westman, people weren't keen about Danni (smart under the radar female), Aras (straight white male yes but Terry was the favoured straight white male HERO arechetype, whereas Aras was tinged with borderline villainy as Terry's nemesis and no other reason really). Then we get Yul and Earl (not white but at least straight males and hero archetypes so they're respected but not to the Ethan and Tom W levels of adoration), then Todd (gay and a villain), then Parvati (a woman and a villain), then Bob (an interesting one as he is staight white male and the audience liked him mostly but there was no straight white male HERO archetype this season, and guess what another season not widely liked by fans despite it being fantastic), then there was JT whose edit was definitely filling straight white male hero archetype and he was LOVED by fans (but his villainous and dopey ways in his subsequent seasons have since tarnished that but at the time of Tocantins he was adored for filling that straight white male hero archetype). Samoa and Heroes vs Villains was a turning point in Survivor history as a lot of people wanted Russell H, a supervillain to win, and in HvV I think a lot of people respected Parv a lot more (including retrospectively on her s16 win). People didn't like Natalie W's under the radar game, but respect for Sandra's second win also assisted in breaking (or at least weakening) the old school fixation on the straight male hero archetype moving forward in the New School era. This was solidified in Nicaragua when the winner was straight white male but goofy and silly. Then moving forward in the seasons onwards, the straight white male hero archetype was definitely weakened as Boston Rob's villainous win was respected (withstanding complaints of being overrated), the subsequent string of women winners was respected (Sophie, Kim, Denise), then Tyson and Tony LOVED as villainous winners and Natalie A's win was respected enough. In the 30s, it's difficult to test whether the straight white male hero archetype had a comeback or not as most winners were straight white male hero archetypes (Mike, Adam, Ben, Nick, Chris U, Tommy) plus two being straight black male hero archetypes (Jeremy and Wendell). All I can say is Michele's win was unpopular (but the audience craved a different woman to win in Aubry) and Sarah's win was not loved despite being well-earned (I do find this strange but it's inconclusive why as people didn't care for Troyzan or Brad either and probably wanted a Cirie win at last or even a Sandra triple win). Chris U's win was controversial with audiences because of EOE and I dont think demographics was the issue at all. So what I can conclude is that the straight white male hero archetype didn't have a comeback with audiences in the 30s but it may possibly have been subconscious bias on juror's part - or more likely purely coincidental and what is actually favoured now is assertive gameplay rather than the hero archetype from any demographic and it seems men still are more likely to be more assertive with gameplay than women (the assertive women in the 30s have either fallen short of making it to the end or weren't as assertive as the male winner sitting next to them at the end - although in Chrissy's case I think auduences favoured her over Ben as she was more strategically assertive showing how far audiences have drifted from the straight white male hero archetype obsession). Tony as the next second time winner solidifies this, as fans loved his second tricksy villainous win rather than the filling of the hero cookie cutter. Will be interesting to see how audience's attitudes shape up for the 40s. But one last observation, just because Survivor audiences have drifted from the straight white male hero archetype that doesn't mean broader society has. Remember the number of viewers of Survivor has drastically decreased for New School seasons. The audiences who stopped watching may still well be fixated on the straight white male hero archetype, or maybe not. But Survivor audience reactions/attitudes can't be user to measure or conclude either way.
