LEGO is the biggest toymaker in the world. It makes billions of bricks each year and is worth over $40 billion. And it all started with a carpenter who was left to care for his four sons after his wife passed away.
To make ends meet, he used his workshop to make wooden toys - until it burnt down for the third time.
This is the story of LEGO.

Wow, their journey was exactly like the concept of LEGO. They built something only for it to be brought down. Then they rebuilt it to make it better. Fate struck them again and yet just like LEGO, they kept rebuilding their product into something even better. Fascinating!

I was a little kid in the 1950's and was probably one of the very first kids to play with Legos. My American family was in Paris, and my dad would go often to Denmark. The 'bricks' we had didn't even have cylinders inside - they were hollow/open underneath. There was one or more green or red flat pieces and about 50 bricks - full size (8 protrusions) and half size with 4 ....that was it.

Corrections: -Ole Kirk’s first wife’s last name was Sörenson, not Johnson -Kirstine died while giving birth to Karl, not years after -Ole’s motto is Only The Best is Good Enough, not Only The Best is Worthy -Ole actually discovered the Kiddicraft bricks at the same toy fair as the molding machine, they were used as a test product to show the machine’s capabilities. -The toy sellers were NOT right, children did enjoy plastic toys as much or if not more then wooden toys. The disliking for LEGO’s Automatic Binding Bricks (that’s what they were first called) came from the inaccuracies in molding, making some bricks fit together better then others. -The video fails to mention Ole’s second wife and daughter, Sofie Jörgenson and Ulla Christiansen -The “Bricks with Tubes” design was created months after Ole’s death, he did not help with the design -Video says that he had to decide between 1. Ditching wooden toy production, and 2. Moving ahead with plastic. He did both. -The video completely forgets the whole Samsonite co-branding on all American LEGO toys for most of the 70s. Samsonite bought LEGO’s license and started producing toys under the name “LEGO: By Samsonite” but LEGO withdrew the license after 9 or so years because Samsonite was rapidly degrading the quality of their bricks, so much so that one of the last sets they sold had 1200 pieces and sold for 11$. -In 1963 LEGO changed their toys from using Cellulose Acetate plastic to Acrilotronitrile Butadiene Styrene (yes, I memorized that). Video fails to mention it. I think there’s some more stuff, but I’ve practically written an essay already and don’t feel like writing more

I remember walking through the production floor with my dad back in the 80s when he sometimes had to pick up some papers after hours. The distinct smell of molten plastic in the air, the hissing and puffing of the pneumatic ejection from the moulding machines. Thousands of yellow mini figure heads rolling into bins :-) Great times.

LEGO are profiting more from adults who are getting into Lego. I am 40 years old and growing too old for Lego had turned into an urban myth. Before the 2000's, this is when growing too old for Lego wasn't an urban myth.

Lego was the only toy I cared about as a kid. Anything readymade was boring to me. I feel like my analytical and creative skills have their roots in the time I spent on Lego.
