@@keithirvine1 that's low brow. I am not making any excuses. WAY too much wrong with religious power used for abuse! Not a victim myself, but not so far removed either. But, this piece by Brady is a feel good story, so keep the dialogue out of the gutter.

Cliff Stoll has a degree in astronomy (not kleinology 😉). It took watching him in several videos before I realized I'd seen him way back in 1990 on an episode of the PBS science show Nova, narrating the story of how he tracked down a hacker. To see a 40 year old Cliff (and an entertaining pgm) search KZfaq for The KGB The Computer and Me. PBS might have it too.

He did a lot of amazing and intriguing stuff. In the 80s he tracked down some German hackers, see his book "The Cuckoo's Egg".

Yep, that's me. Br. Guy and I have been friends since 1975, when we were grad students at the Lunar & Planetary Labs in Tucson. Lotsa stories ... his advice resulted in my writing /The Cuckoo's Egg/ (sure hope I gave him credit there!). When he took his vows as a Jesuit, I had the honor of attending the ceremony; across the decades, we've collaborated on research projects in astronomy & planetary physics. We've spoken at meetings (ranging from physics colloquia to science-fiction conventions) -- fun! This video shows only a few sides of him; he's way fascinating and insightful.

Fascinating video. I knew the Vatican had an observatory in Arizona, but knew very little about the one in Rome. The BBC Sky at Night visited a couple of years ago. When he said Roger Angel had made the mirror in Arizona, I thought I recognised the name. Of course he is the director of The Mirror Lab. Possibly the best telescope mirror factory in the world. He invented the idea of spinning the oven. Since this is big enough to make a mirror 8.4 metres (27.5 ft) across weight more than 10 tons, that is no small thing. They are currently making sets of mirrors for the Large Magellan Telescope, and the Synoptic Sky Survey Telescope. They made some videos about their work which are well worth a look.

Brother Guy reminds me a lot of Cliff Stoll in this video with how excited he is learn and to share his excitement with the world. Like talking about every little piece along the way and how it is important and all leads us to a spectacular whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. And describing the PoV of someone involved in discovering this for the first time. He is a great guest

This is all very interesting in its own right. I'd just like to add that it's nice to see something on the Vatican's contribution to science. Hopefully this will help to dispel some of the myths about Catholic views on science.

There's a really good app or website that shows where the darkest places in the US are. I'm guessing where they chose in Arizona is in one of these very, very dark places.

Philadelphia's Franklin Institute Science Museum has a Ziess reflector as old or a little older. It spends clear days watching the Sun but on scheduled Friday nights it's open to the public for stargazing. Back in the 1990's I was at the museum for a meeting of the Amateur Radio club there. A few of us stopped by the observatory and I noticed a ticking on my handheld radio. I was standing next to an acrylic box that housed the timer for the telescope, *_one nearly identical to the timer the Brother switched on._* I even remember the sound. Why? Because the Ham radio club's station was an exhibit adjacent to the observatory and that tick appeared as interference on every band from AM to UHF (around 1 to 500 MHz) doing it's best to drive the operators (including me) crazy. Was the interference fixed? After a fashion. A few months later the Amateur Radio exhibit, which had been around since the 1950's, was closed and the radio club was asked to find a new home. About 20/25 years later I read somewhere that they had finally updated the telescope's electronics.

Do they correct the polar alignment of these old telescopes for the precession of the earth's axis since they were installed?

Benny Colyn Telescope alignment is always relative to the earth, so they do not get realigned. The astronomical catalogues are based on fixed dates, and adjusted as necessary.

@@gordonrichardson2972 I'm talking about polar alignment - making the RA axis points to the celestial pole. I'm an amateur astrophtographer and PA is a (sometimes annoying) part of the setup each night (since I must tear it all down when done). But it is important to get this exact so long exposures are possible. Many modern professional observatories use alt-az mounts with field derotators so they don''t have to bother but I wonder how these older instruments fare.
