Toronto’s Port Lands, just east of downtown, is nearly a thousand acres of underutilized land, much of which sits within a designated floodplain. A massive planning effort is underway to plot the future of the Port Lands, which can only start once the area is flood protected. The solution to this challenge is to make more room for the Don River to flow - a green approach to vital infrastructure that will improve Toronto’s resiliency and help clean our water. Check out this video to see what the new mouth of the Don River will look like when complete.

Couldn't help but notice that the Logan ave off ramps are still there in the future, even tho they are gone now.

Hi @Cheesyrider, a lot has changed since 2016 and we’ve been busy finalizing designs for the Port Lands Flood Protection project. We didn’t know in 2016 that we would be combining part of the City of Toronto’s Gardiner East project with the Port Land Flood Protection project. But it became clear that combining these projects was a safer, more economical decision. The removal of the Gardiner ramps has been part of the City’s plan since 2014 and the combination allows for few traffic disruptions (in the long term) and more green space and bike lanes earlier.

The plan for Villiers Island (which is the developed area you’re seeing in this video) is to build a mix of affordable and family-friendly housing. To achieve that goal, the Villiers Island Precinct Plan (adopted by Toronto City Council in 2017) includes an affordable housing strategy. At minimum, 20% of housing built on public land will be permanent and long-term affordable rental housing. We’ll work with the City of Toronto to make that percentage of affordable housing even higher.

If that was the case, you don't want money in Toronto? But free housing for people that bring little to downtown Canada? Are you serious? There's plenty of charity in Toronto. You just don't look.

@@BeeRich33 T&T was just closed so this is starting... Community housing is all over the city. The plan is no matter how prime the location is, there will always be room for low income families.

The Port is in the southern section on the Ship Channel, which they aren't touching yet. Freighters will probably still layup for the winter along Promontory Park, in fact if I remember correctly that's something they listed as a winter attraction to the area. The two can work together, just look at the Sugar Beach/Sherbourne Common area

The whole point is to eliminate that sharp right turn at the mouth of the Don which'll keep the entire river flowing, washing pollution into the harbour and preventing flooding, so not only will this river be really nice, the rest of the Don upstream (especially the stagnant straightened part south of Riverdale Park) will be cleaner as well

The Port Lands Flood Protection project began earlier this year with construction on the Cherry Street Stormwater and Lakefilling, a component of the larger Port Lands project. Construction on the river is scheduled to begin this summer.

more development that continue to pollute lake Ontario. remember the flood of 2017; too many highrises where the sun doesnt get to penetrate the grounds and the cooling effect is longer winters etc.

This project is about creating a healthier, more naturalized outlet for the Don River and protecting Toronto’s eastern waterfront from flooding. It involves re-routing the existing Don River so that flood waters can run off into the inner harbour instead of damaging the surrounding neighbourhoods. This work involves digging a kilometer-long river valley, which ends in a new mouth that we are constructing for the Don River. That’s how Villiers Island will be created. We are also cleaning up polluted land at the same time as we build new roads, bridges, utilities and public trails. When this work is complete, we will have created 41 hectares of green space and parkland.

omg bruman - you are a simpleton and an idiot! the whole point of this development is to return this are to a more natural state. it's an industrial wasteland right now. and high rises dont lengthen the seasons, they do create microclimates and wind though. and what does any of that have to do with the flood of 2017? amazing that you can even operate a computer.
