Synopsis: En route from New York City to Greece on New Year's Eve, majestic passenger ship the S.S. Poseidon is overtaken by a tidal wave. With the captain (Leslie Nielsen) dead, surviving passengers, including the passionate Rev. Scott (Gene Hackman), band together in the ship's ballroom. The group struggles to avert fires, flooding, structural instability and mechanical malfunctions as they make their way through a maze of ladders and tunnels in their desperate attempt to escape a watery grave.

I watched this on HBO Max today, and it was great, but I wouldn't wanna be trapped on that ship, because I'm in a wheelchair, and there is no way someone like me would look for the way out of there.

THIS movie, with an entire set, that turns upside-down, extensive pyrotechnics and massive controlled water deluges, lost out, for an academy award, for best effects, to a head spinning doll and projectile pea soup. Yet, in the advance of years, which holds up, still?? The team for FX, got robbed.

Actually, they did win. That year, there wasn't a specific award for special effects, but the Academy was so impressed (as well they should have been) with what L. B. Abbott and A. D. Flowers did with the special effects in this movie, that they gave them a special award.

@@jerrypadilla4384 ooh, the tidal wave is coming and it looks like a surfing wave instead of what tidal waves really look like, ooh some, not all, the tables are inexplicably nailed to the floor so they can dramatically be seen hanging from the ceiling, ooh, the fat lady can hold her breath for 45 minutes, ooh let's use the giant Christmas tree as an escape ladder! ooh Pamela Sue Martin wore her culottes under her formal gown just in case the ship flipped (the FX to beat all FXes), ooh look at those obvious dummies falling into the fire 🔥 ooh, for no reason whatsoever, and worst of all, ooh, let's watch the ship *explode* just so the FX team can introduce superfluous FX!!! unforgivable see? anyone can do that, dullard

The Poseidon Adventure was a great cruise and new year's disaster flim that would be great to watch a movie on New Year's Eve and Especially New Year's Day same as 2006 Remake Poseidon. The Poseidon Adventure is my number 1 best movie of the year 1972.

The author of the book wrote it because he basically experienced this in real life. He was aboard the Queen Mary and one night, the ship was struck by a huge wave. It didn't cause the ship to capsize, but it did cause a lot of things to slide upon impact. The author wondered what would have happened if they did end up capsize. The ship in this movie is modeled after the Queen Mary. Basically the story was to tell us how the author would have survived in the situation.

R.I.P. Stella Stevens (1938-2023). Now Gene Hackman is the last surviving adult cast member of the movie at 93. Pamela Sue Martin and Eric Shea who played the kids are still living too.

Correct. Gene Hackman, who I consider one of America's greatest living actors, lives on his ranch in Santa Fe. He still does work on his property at 93.

The movie turns 50! Gene Hackman, the late Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Roddy McDowell Was the second highest-grossing film to come out that year, trailing only The Godfather Didn't know it was based on Paul Gallico’s novel - which would be adapted two more times subsequently Corny, clanky but undeniably fun Some decent effects using miniatures and low Dutch angles It's considered camp by todays standards and even modern blockbusters will be dated too But it did usher a new wave of disaster movies in Hollywood Hackman said it was the best job--a money maker as it were; Yet Hackman as a preacher creates a character whose will to live - and to save other’s lives in the process - is a matter of religious devotion, a Job-like burden against a spiteful or indifferent God He strives to make the movie deserve his performance Producer Irwin Allen and director Ronald Neame turn a simple fight for survival into an action showcase that nonetheless goes to greater lengths than necessary to develop its characters and make their survival (and sacrifices) meaningful to the audience

Now after Stella Stevens' passing on 2/17/2023 the only surviving cast member in an adult role is Gene Hackman; Pamela Sue Martin and Eric Shea are also still living but they played the roles of a teen and a child, respectively.

The only thing that bothered me about this great movie is the ending where the survivors arrive in the propeller shaft at the very instant the rescue (helicopters?) arrive. Talk about good timing!! Also there would probably be salvage boats around as well. After all the ship was in radio contact with Crete just before the tidal wave struck and the Poseidon did send out a mayday. Its not like no one knew they were there.

@@stefantomasi4036 first of all, you have to give props to the original and the initiative that was put in in the set design, and in that Era of film making, I find that almost always, the characters do a better job of convincing you that this seemingly impossible situation is a reality. The acting is compelling, whereas, now a day you find that the story, the characters, and actors have the luxury of falling back on the special affects and cgi. Old movies were a labor of love, compare the original star wars movies to the trash they put out now, or even the marvel movies, they have stunning visual effects and hollow acting and a poor storyline.

I never realized just how bad this movie was. At 10 tears old when the movie was in the theater, I thought it was awful, The Corny script, the terrible acting, the dumb effects, But now I see it is upsetting also, Just drama everywhere you turn and loud explosions and people screaming thru-out the movie, The non-stop shouting and anger ,,, Why would someone want to sit thru this ? Just a pointless stupid movie.
