The extraordinary story of a decade-long battle with the Post Office, fought by their own Sub Postmasters. Some call it the widest miscarriage of justice in UK legal history.
The Post Office says it is ''assisting the Criminal Cases Review Commission to the fullest extent'' with inquiries into cases of postmasters convicted of theft and fraud.

I still cannot believe how the post office got this wrong , did'nt they wonder why all of a sudden postmasters from all over the country had started supposedly thieving , you would have thought the first thing they would have checked was the computer systems , these postmasters should be compensated massivly , also the accusers should be punished heavily

The fact this didn’t hit the UK’s national media is atrocious. Plenty of people still don’t know about it. It’s only because of Private Eye pursing it that ‘some’ people know. Lives were ruined and people’s whole existences were destroyed. Some invested all their life savings to fix it, others committed suicide because of it. The whole thing is appalling. People, the CEO trusted ‘a system’ more than human character. 555 people took it to court and it was a lawyer in Leeds who pursed it. The CEO and leadership teams lied about Horizon being 100% accurate. It destroyed people. They were falsely accused of fraud. Awful. I feel so sorry for the victims.

Still that will never reverse the mental trauma and shame and damage it has done to these poor individuals that threw most of them in jail for a crime they never committed , they knew they had a problem with the software they were using and when money went out they blamed it on the employees to Cover their own backs so they wouldn’t face the barriers and judges in court them selfs for using a faulty software, What a scam they played.

I thought I’d followed this reasonably closely, but having just finished The Great Post Office Scandal by Nick Wallis. The extent of this truly is staggering and people from the Post Office should be in prison.

They were given 21k pounds each after potentially having paid out of pocket to balance the books or being sent to jail. People lost homes, life saving, some commited suicide. Its not enough, its not justice.

Reversing these fraudulent prosecutions and false convictions will be difficult, because it would mean admitting that prosecutors can and do lie, possibly quite often. Policemen lie in court, often, and all over the world, often through the belief that they know who the bad guys are, so it doesn't matter that they did not commit exactly what they are being charged with. The prosecutors know that, and so do the judges, who mostly have extensive experience as prosecutors and have to be turning a blind eye to inconsistencies in the prosecution case, missing and withheld evidence. How much does this apply to the other agencies who have the right to prosecute in England and Wales without involving the Crown Prosecution Service? These include the Post Office (supposedly a publicly owned "business" now), the R.S.P.C.A. (for cases of cruelty to animals), perhaps other agencies. There has been talk of taking that right away from the RSPCA. The problems with leaving it all to the CPS are (1) They are understaffed because they don't pay well, (2) They are underfunded and (3) They share the old Home Office culture of being economical with the truth. This issue came up in 1980 when the Birmingham Six, the evidence against whom was wholly fictitious, made a civil claim against the police for their false convictions for an IRA pub bombing. Lord Denning (the Master of the Rolls) said that if what they were claiming was true, it would mean that the police were guilty of perjury and had forced confessions by means of violence and threats, which opened up such an "appalling vista" that it was not right that the case "should go any further." So he stuck his head back in the sand.

Think again. This is what she told the court at her trial : “At the start of the trial on Tuesday last week (October 12), prosecutor Warwick Tatford said she admitted she had “cooked the books". But he said she alleged that she had hidden evidence of the disappearing monies to cover up what she claimed were thefts by staff colleagues. She then said the branch’s IT system had caused the account deficit and that she was not sufficiently competent to operate it.” Btw, she said she had MSc Degree in computer science.

@@user-rs6gl5lx6f There were many postmasters who were convicted by court of stealing money, some as much as £200,000. Your statement “This was a criminal act by Post office, the Royal Mail and Fujitsu” is totally untrue, you are spreading misinformation.

Paula V - this vile woman should be in prison for the extensive harm and destruction she caused and being responsible for the deaths, and suicide of many. She walked away with 5 million pounds as well - this should be clawed back to pay her victims - though this would be a drop in the ocean for the compensation that her victims deserve.

Fist of all, how culd they be so naive??? If you see that the till is short you check all transactions one by one at the end of the day. Then you know that the system is wrong not you. You do not let the system cheat on you. I am sorry for them and happy that finally the truth came out.

If that was all that was needed, why didn't the PO do it? Why didn't the hundreds of other wrongly accused do it? Why didn't the defence lawyers do it? Are you seriously telling me you are the only one who isn't naïve, and all those hundreds of people were? You think an awful lot of your self don't you. You must be some towering genius to have worked out an easy solution when all these people couldn't see it. Wow. You really are smart.
@leslaw90
@leslaw90 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your opinion. You don't need to be a genius to apply a common sense. If this had happend to me and I could not find out why the money is missing from the till I woud do as follows: Install a CCTV sytem recording what goes in and out the till drawer, and what the PO system is showing on its screen. Next time the PO system tell me there is a discrepancy I would analyse the videos from that day and would know exactly how much money there should be in the till. This is only one example of what you can do. This way I would know that the PO system is wrong and have a proof that I haven't stolen anything. Two birds with one stone. This way the PO system would only last in my shop until its second mistake. Now you gonna tell me that it would be too expensive. But it would only cost a small fraction of what these people lost, paying the differences from their own money and savings, and sometimes forced to sell houses to cover for "missing" money generated by the PO system. So I guess none of them have had a similar idea. In this case you can call me a genius. ;) I am not surprised by what the PO have done to these people, but I still fail to understand how one can be so naive.

@@leslaw90 You are the perfect example of what American's call the Monday morning Quarterback. The arrogance of declaring literally hundreds of people who are wrongly accused and threatened with bankruptcy and jail, and their legal representatives, who had no idea about all the other identical cases, as 'naïve' for not coming up with a plan which you, who has no dog in the fight, have sat devising with 100% hindsight, with all the groundwork and facts laid out for you in a carefully researched video, is just astounding to me. You are one of those people who hears someone relate a story of some disaster they had endured, and always starts their reply with, "Of course, you know what I would have done..." like they are somehow smarter than everyone else and should be consulted on all future matters. Get over yourself.

Hi. In all cases shown on YT there was CASH missing from the till, according to the system and the people were accused of theft because of that. So how recording everything would not be a proof that they are not guilty?
