I have been struggling being a loner over the years. I've been questioning myself why I don't have a big circle of friends. I've been always thinking that there might be something wrong with me. But I realised that I've always wanted to be alone most of the time to be at peace.

Same. I've always liked being alone but at the same time felt there was something very flawed about me that I couldn't make or keep friends. Part of it is I just live in my head too much. It is difficult for me to leave my head and fully participate with others.

Being a loner makes me feel powerful. It means I don't need the assurance of others and that I'm confident in my own company. I am not limited by what others expect from me and that, to me, is the ultimate form of liberation.

@The Tranquil Heart thankyou. Does feel imbarrasing at times when people say something like “ can you get a friend to help you?” Or something like that. And your like, “ well no.” Because I don’t have any. It’s a bit sad really. I don’t think I’m a boring person. Just for some reason don’t have any mates. I guess thats what the universe wants for me right now.
@houseoftheblackcats

@The Tranquil Heart I don’t mind or care as much as I used to, but I still feel I’m missing out in a way. I see couples or just friends out together and I wonder why I’ve got to my age and am without friends. I have one person I speak to who I went to skool with, but she’s not really interested now. Which is fine, but to have people in your life you can turn to or just hang out with would be nice. I just wonder why the universe doesn’t want that for me.

Being a “loner” is wonderful. I was married for 22 years then got divorced (her choice). First month being alone was scary and lonely but now (5 months later) it’s been great. I love having time all by myself and doing whatever I want on my own terms. Fortunately, she made it easier by being this evil and hateful person towards the end. So glad she showed me her true colors, you couldn’t pay me to go back. Now I look forward to enjoying life. Also, what made the transition easier was that I always believed and preached to my son and daughter to always love yourself and be happy by yourself and not to rely on anyone else for happiness. Finally, my friends came through in a huge way during this episode in my life. So yes, I love living and being alone, having genuine caring friends was also critical. Have less live more!!

@@Felipe-zl1rj True I’m single but also alone. I don’t need anyone for me to be happy and enjoy living. If I talk to someone, great if I don’t great too. So, genuinely learn to be happy and live by yourself, life afterwards is much easier. Also, “those” friends of mine I may see them once a month so yeah I’m a loner and love it and have genuine and caring friends.

I moved to Japan from the United States in 2002. I had one pen pal who spoke English, and we became friends. I did meet some others who spoke English, but most of the time I was totally alone. I tried to learn the language but never really became good enough to communicate. I spent the first few months traveling around Japan and then rented an apartment in Osaka. I had planned to get a job teaching English, but after 6 months my mother became very ill and I had to return to the US to care for her. I was sad to leave Japan but it was very nice to be able to talk to people when I was back in the US. There are many things about Japan that I still love and miss, but if I had not been an introvert, I would not have been able to stand the loneliness.

As an only child I learned and appreciated being alone. It also improved my creativity. Because I’m restless I had to do something all the time and not sit idle Most have a difficult time being alone or finding the time and place to do it But it really helps to concentrate on yourself and your thoughts and peace of mind At this stage of my life I welcome and enjoy my time alone and I love it! I'm a loner too, but I don't feel lonely. There are so many people complaining about feeling lonely these days. It almost makes you think if there's something wrong with us. I think we're just underrepresented. I think there are loads of us, but we don't make ourselves known, so each one of us ends up thinking we're all hermits.

I like the quietness of your vidoes, Sena. Lots of valuable life lessons in there. One thing about today's topic. Sometimes life throws curved balls at you, that you didn't expect (although with the benefits of hindsight, you could have seen coming - but that's another subject). So you can find yourself on your own, trying to figure out what everything means and struggling with it all. Being alone with your thoughts can be helpful as you try to make sense of stuff but it can become more crowded and noisy than any bustling city centre. What I mean is that when stuff happens to you which you didn't choose and weren't in control of, you can get many thoughts (and voices) which are often contradictory and confusing. Dealing with them can be completely exhausting. When this happened to me and threatened to descend into depression I decided not go and seek medical help, with the prospect of anti-depressants that I'd be on forever because, let's face it, depression of any sort (and I was nowhere near clinical depression) can feel bloody awful. So I made the choice to seek out some form of social contact. From a shortlist of requirements I alighted on Salsa classes and it worked. I never became a champion dancer but I did engage with some form of social contact that stopped me from obsessively going over the same stuff again and again in my mind. To finish, this is not against the topic, Sena. Rather it is my way of saying that if you are an introvert, you can get to enjoy the time you spend with other people much more when it is limited and you have chosen the parameters.

Nice to hear this positive perspective from an older person! I'm 65 years old, and have suffered greatly for many decades due to involvement with an extremely dysfunctional, mentally ill, uncaring, disloyal family. (Trying to stay faithful, yet periodically getting kicked in the teeth as my "reward" for being helpful and self-sacrificing.) Life circumstances have left me high and dry from the enjoyable and rewarding Social attachments I once had when I was younger. Lately I've been pondering whether I should move to a larger City where I could meet people that I like and that might be wonderful to know and interact with. The trouble is, so many people you meet nowadays turn out to be either kooky, crazy, dumb, immature, cold, irritating, unbalanced, or not loyal, etc. So it just seems pointless to invest the effort required in finding new, good, supportive friends. I thank you for posting your life experience of following the solitary path. Thanks for your assurances that solitary living can be GOOD, overall! You've given me the boost I've been needing to make a fresh start and return to my own BEST company --myself!!

Ive,always been mostly a loner. A lot of it is im a natural introvert AND I'm different and i always,m refused to be something or someone im bot to fit in and be approved of. I learned the hard way that popularity, groups of people (even family) school friends etc. can be fleeting and disappointing. As im in my senior years now i have NO tolerance for the worlds "noise, chaos and confusions; and you tube is my only social media and ONLY because I find it educational. With the pandrmic I havent travelled long distance except once in a year and a half, haven't dined out, gone to Starbucks, the gym or even seen people except around my building. Guess what? Its actually rather nice. Very quiet, try new recipes, writing and drawing and doung yoga. And meditation. In retrospect i was running around too much-not necessarily with people but too much around peiple and their vibes. I plan to go back to the gym safely but not much else AND I save money a lot because i only buy absolute necessities now instead of grabbing a takeout because its there or seeing an advert for something I dont need and snatching it on impulse. .The power of solitude is indeed powerful once one surrenders to it. Peace😊👳‍♂️

I'm alone too often with my thoughts, which has become a mental health issue at this time. I've been too much of a hermit, and now coming out of it doesn't work. Solitude is awesome when it's a choice but, when it becomes isolation, the fun is gone. That's where I'm at now, talking to myself during the day so I do not go insane.

I tried so hard to make friends and go out of my way, but I always got hurt. Same goes for the dating world. I've realized that I need to embrace being a loner rather than being disappointed by others and continue with self-love. My intelligence also hinders me because I can't stand small talk. I'd rather talk about psychology, biology, astronomy, history, philosophy, mythology, and other deep subjects, but people don't like to talk about those things and would rather talk about others and bring other people down, so I will stand alone and do things alone from here on out

I don't know whether I am a loner or not. But I am capable of doing things alone and enjoy it. This is considered weird here, because mostly everyone is highly social.I can do that,i mean socializing, but not everyday😁. Interesting topic tho, thanks for sharing

Being a loner sucks, at 29 I found a wonderful women and within a year we got married, bought a house, we had a baby. It’s the best thing that every happened to me. That was 34 years ago. Was it a snap, was it easy, not always, but it was worth it. It’s not for everyone, but if you have the mindset that your are a husband and father and put your wife and children first, it’s the best way to achieve happiness. For those who find happiness in their solitude without the responsibility of a wife and children, more power to you.

ultimately aren't we all alone in this world? yeah you make friends in grade school, high school and college but they wont stay with you forever they'll go their own road and have family of their own and they'll only acknowledge you when you do something groundbreaking same with family, you grow with them but ultimately your parents wont be here forever and you wont be here forever for your children and grandkids being alone provides a sense of tranquility

I love being alone.... I like travelling alone, I go places whatever way I like. However at the same time, one know that without friends at all, we will have problems when we need help. Living totally alone is kind of selfish. It is not how normal people live their life. Therefore, I socialize so that when I need something I can ask others to help me. Life is full of strategies!

Totally agree.

What is “normal” anyway? Or by “normal” do you mean “like most people?” (Rhetorical.) Socializing for the purpose of having people around to ask them to help you when you need something is just as “selfish” as living totally alone.

@@wahoo4uva You cannot ask help from others unless you give first. Most people are not that stupid to be abused. Therefore, we need to sow the seeds to reap! Selfish is when you never give, only take!

I'm a loner too for many years and now at age of 30. As years goes by, I find myself loner than the previous years. I like it when I have my personal space and do everything at my own pace but once it becomes a habit it's difficult to get along when someone new comes into my life. Is this becoming a problem?

If having people in your life don't necessarily make you happy, then you shouldn't worry about forcing yourself to make room for someone you would rather not have around.

I'm just like you. I beat myself up for years, about not being socially "normal" like everyone else, but realized I'm much happier by myself most of the time, and only enjoy short company or brief interactions every once in a while - but never out of necessity as i rarely seek them out by myself. When i do seek them out, it's usually with great effort and thoughts. I'm at a stage now, where i just mostly choose to do what makes me happy and comfortable, rather than constantly force myself into uncomfortable situations, just because it's the popular social norm that is more appealing in the society.

@@casp6426 That's great you found your pace with that. I'm coping well by going out of my bubble whenever I want and back into the bubble whenever I need it until the pandemic started. Technically we're still in it and I am getting too comfortable alone that I need a breakout.

@@Taka-nq3ys i feel you. Being an introverted loner sometimes kinda get to you a bit. Just take your time and find the right balance for yourself. Walks around the neighborhood and mere exchange of hellos with a few people or quick chats with strangers; does me good whenever i crave that brief out-of-my-bubble experience. Weirdly enough, it's often more enjoyable for me to have quick chats with random strangers, but gets quickly exhausting interacting with family/friends/colleagues, without first preparing mentally for such interactions. Despite our similarities as introverts/loners, we're still all uniquely different individuals, so various different things might work best for you. My trick is often not to bother myself much, trying to figure out what, when or how to go about getting outside my bubble; i just pay attention to my spirit/energy, and follow whatever it organically compels me to do; mostly spontaneously. Those are usually the most refreshing and fulfilling.

Without great solitude, no serious work is possible. In the end, it depends on a persons personality, constitution that determine whtr being alone is better or not. Im a loner and im ok with it. But I know lots of ppl that think being lonely is weird. At the same time these ppl r usually extraverted, enjoy the moment and like materialistic stuff, status and power, like small talks, etc.
