TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Umi says: "- "The power of music is that music is more beautiful if it is played for someone rather than yourself."
In a mix of talk and performance, Umi showcases skillfully and beautifully a little part of her immense talent.
Hailed by The Huffington Post as “a budding musical genius,” 13-year-old American pianist Umi Garrett is gaining acclaim from all over the world for her exquisite musicality, emotional and mature sound, flawless technique and virtuosity, and gracious stage presence filled with poise and charm.
Of her performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Winnipeg Symphony, the Winnipeg Free Press wrote “In addition to displaying bravura technique, the young soloist also possesses an extraordinary musicality.” Umi’s performance with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra was praised by the Crescenta Valley Weekly: “Garrett is the real thing.”
A winner of the First Prize at the 13th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan, the Chopin International Competition Chopin Plus in Budapest, Hungary, and the Grand Prix award at the Chopin International Competition in Hartford, Connecticut, Umi was recently granted a prestigious title of the Young Steinway Artist. Umi is studying piano with Professor John Perry and Mrs. Mina Perry
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. You can recognize people who are really feeling the music they're playing with the moves they make and how heavy they breathe.

I once had a friend who joked that he never wanted to play on a piano that I had just played Chopin on, because it looked like I had had an orgasm during playing....

kismetcapitan I guess you've felt the music a lot then. Probably too much, I guess that looked creepy.
@kismetcapitan
@kismetcapitan 7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it did, but I've seen creepier classical performers. I'd go so far as to say that the better the performance, the more you don't want to watch the musician's face or body movements lol. At conservatory, a lot of professors were in the habit of closing their eyes while listening, a habit I've adopted. It also enhances your sense of hearing by uncluttering one's mind from visual inputs.

she has an astonishing touch and technique on the keyboard that I have rarely heard; a one in a billion talent. Her interpretations are beautiful and as she experiences the darker sides of life, those interpretations will surely grow in emotional depth. I don't doubt that 50 years from now she will be considered among the greatest pianists of all time.

expressrobkill - Not true, as a pianist myself (although not every pianist can tell) you can tell from a passionate and musical player vs just a musician that has amazing technique but no musical element to their playing, just knows how to play the notes perfectly.

i play the piano to, and have no idea how to read more than a simple crotchet quaver, i play by ear but i still understand having practised for 2 year's that i would have to play several more years in order to be as farmiiar as she is with the keyboard, changing up music is easy so is creating songs if you play by ear, if i played as much as her those songs would come easy.

Oh my... to think of the life she has ahead of her; the experiences, the loves, the let-downs and the joy of giving her best to others - makes most lives seem boring! How blessed she is to have had the nurturing from such a young age. She will no doubt have some tales to tell as she goes through life as a technically and musically perfect pianist. To see the level of musicianship, loyalty to the craft and sheer talent she has, gives me goose bumps. I would love to hear her in concert!

I love classical music, but as a life-long English, public speaking, communications fan, I love to hear great talented people talk about their trade. I realize that not everybody can do that. Living, is Art and it is Music. :) She is really a great pianist, I love how passionate she plays the piano. She has a big heart, playing for many people especially with her cause to share her love for Music, to people recovering from Tsunami. She is really beautiful! I'm so blessed to see her on KZfaq! UMI, THAT WAS AMAZING!!! You have improved A LOT on your interpretation, they're more mature, I kinda don't wanna say this but, I used to not enjoy much your performances even though I was so impressed with your technique (I couldn't believe you could play well Gnomenreigen at 9) but I've witnessed through these years that your performances are getting better and better, and now I am so excited, I enjoyed them A LOT, I'm so happy right now =P! Chopin was perfectly played, I can hear in your performance what the conductor told you, that "every note is special". About your Op. 10 No. 4...THAT WAS AMAZING! You made me feel shivers! It was so powerful! About the piano, I didn't like it for the last piece, seems like it is too new (it sounds muted/mellow)...but it sounded great for the nocturne. It was interesting to hear your breath while playing the piano! I loved it. As always, you look so beautiful and I love you haven't lost your charm, you still fun =D! I also believe that music has power to change humanity, and I thank you for sharing it! You are such an incredible human being, I am so happy to meet you! Hope I can meet you in person someday, it'd be AWESOME. Thank you TEDx for sharing the video! UMIPIANO.

Personal expression is a powerful way to convey a piece of music to the audience. Even a Mozart Sonata in a minor Key can sound happy / sad depends on how it is played. Once met Scott Houston, an American who later hosted the shows "The Piano Guy" & "Piano in a Flash" on PBS. He considered Classical music to be uncreative & too rigid on following rules. He encouraged people who want to start playing piano later in life to get into Jazz or Pop music because these styles allow players to improvise (add & alter notes) along the way.

I'm glad to hear musicians exploring the different interpretations possible for a set of notes. I loved Liberace because he would do this exact thing - play Mozart in a boogy-woogy style or the Orange Blossom Special as a Bach fugue. It enhances both the intellectual and the emotional aspects of music.
