The Power of Originality in Photography //
I’ve just started watching Stranger Things series 3, and made me think about how nostalgia is often used to add emotive impact to contemporary art and media.
The trouble with nostalgia is that it’s selective in what it remembers and the response is subjective to the person experiencing it. In short, it’s not real. It’s merely a feeling - and one that will only resonate with the group of people for which those particular nostalgic triggers are relevant.
Stranger Things is good not because it relies on nostalgia, but because underneath, its narrative building blocks are solid. The characters have depth, the plot is engaging and the direction is captivating.
While it’s important to study the groundbreaking and iconic photographic work of the past, we won’t move forward by simply attempting to emulating a nostalgic aesthetic. We’ve already got Henri Cartier-Bresson , Vivian Maier, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams. We don’t need them again.
Groundbreaking work from the past was groundbreaking because it broke ground. Because it was doing something new.
Photography that excites me these days is when I see something new. When I see approaches that I haven’t seen before. And I think this resonates with me so much because firstly, it expands my understanding of what photography can be secondly, it feels authentic.
Nostalgic style can be used to great effect to communicate a message, but style without substance creates work that fades from memory pretty quickly.

It made me stop and think when you talk about Nostalgia being subjective, I haven't really thought about it, but when you are shooting a project for someone say family portraits you can't use what feels nostalgic to you are personal self need to figure out what triggers that feeling in your clients... Or at least I think that's what you're saying. Nostalgia becomes a blunt instrument If you don't understand how to use it effectively for your primary audience. Thank you for sharing such an interesting thought oh, it really got me thinking about my own photography thank you.

It takes time to collect thoughts and express them in a organized, concise manner. Most of the best youtube channels (that I follow at least) do not post weekly, or even longer, but when they do post, it's almost always gold. The way YT works is not conducive to quality unless you're part of a team and doing it as a full time job -- which kind of goes against what KZfaq started out as in the first place and made it so interesting.

I dunno. I can think of a few worse things. Getting glass shards in your eye. Needles under your fingernails. Boy Bands (unless, as this video points out, you grew up with boy bands). Wasps. And even if you're talking just photography: Corrupted memory cards/damaged film. Broken lenses. A camera that fails. A "sharp image with a fuzzy concept" is still worlds better than no image at all. 85% of art is the ability to B.S. You can spin any garbage concept into Pure Genius of Artistic Vision (caps because drama) if you say the right things to the right people.

Ansel Adams dealt in nostalgia a lot, toward the beginning as a way to calm people worried about the Great Depression and the modern, fast-changing world they lived in. He gave them images of the American West, invoking nature and a look back to simpler times (or at least the myth of that). That's not all he was about, but his is a good case for the power of nostalgia.

I honestly can't get enough of your videos. I absolutely love everything about them. The music, production, writing... just seems so high quality. You talk about photography as an art form rather than a past time. As a (very) casual hobbyist this makes it harder for me to relate to the amazing work you cover but I love your videos all the more for exactly that reason. I find myself watching this, the chiaroscuro, lens choice, and cheating videos over and over. It's so refreshing and inspiring to learn about famous photographers and how photography has developed (pun fully intended) over time. Please please keep making more videos. I can imagine a lot of work must go into them so no rush, I'll be here patiently waiting

This is one of the most needed reflections of our mass produced 'retro' age. Some really out of the box thinking, both in this video and the rest of this channel. Constructive ideas are hard to come by at this day and age when it comes to photography on youtube. You have to be really appreciative when you find it, and this is it!
@eifionjones8513
@eifionjones8513 5 жыл бұрын
Some expertly curated and created nostalgia right here. Ironically, many of the references in your graphics add emotional depth, resonance and substance to your message/story. This is because you’ve deconstructed and then re-synthesised them via your own perspective and memories. Many KZfaqrs would have merely grabbed clips of old windows desktops and video games etc and edited a montage then slapped a VO over it. This is much more satisfying and personal.

As a 'consumer' I really feel like you go the extra step to make your audience feel special. The 4:3 ratio, the subtle 'nostalgic' edits and the rhythm and timing of this video (and most of the videos I've seen you post) puts you in a class by yourself on KZfaq. Well done! The information you provide is also excellent and is something I've been applying to my own photos, so thank you. Regarding nostalgia: I think dabbling and using it to covey a certain feeling or era to your photos can be really be fun, innovative or thoughtful; letting it define your imagery or having it limit your style is detrimental. Frankly, it's been done, explore something new and set a new trend... In 30 years it'll become the new 'nostalgic'.

This is part of the reason why when we do our cosplay projects we're very much about "OK, let us present our understanding of these characters." While we appreciate the technical aspects of recreating a scene from a movie or a comic book... what does it say for everyone involved? We'd rather put forth what we want to say instead of just presenting something that is easily recognized and understood.

I was born in 1998 and i love the nostalgia in stranger things. I think photography and filmmaking have the ability to create romanticized ideas and concepts and i kind of love that. I dont imitate the neon nostalgic style BUT im hoping to find a way to capture certain fantastical looks and evoke an emotional response. That might take a lot of work since i have a lot to learn in editing. But i see photography as a way of curating whichever realities youd like. Great vid as always man.

Throughout history, trends of previous decades still came back through art and fashion, so it’s not just people of today being lazy because we live in a “fast world” Especially since the Industrial Revolution and later the spread of mass communication, every period has felt “fast” to those living in it. True, we may feel nostalgic of a time pre-social media and even pre-internet, but if global warming doesn’t destroy our planet and there are future generations that look back on our time, there will be aspects they too will find inspiration or nostalgia in.

THANK YOU! I wish I could reach through my monitor and give you a HUGE HUG! I am so tired of the Nostalgia style. I lived through the 80's and once was enough. Digital artists and photographers are actually stunting artistic growth by relying so much on this style. I truly believe the adage: A good artist borrows from another artist, a great artist steals from another artist. Unfortunately, Nostalgia style artists have reached the point where they stole and now it's a crutch that holds them back from being creative and innovative.

So true man! I love your other video about "the not so perfect image" I've been shooting advertising for a couple of cheers and I still feel my best images are when I first started and I knew nothing!

This video itself is a piece of art, very beautifully made! I find it very hard to really create "new" stuff in photography, maybe variations that are new, but I can't say I'm at a point where I can find and develop entirely new ideas. Often, when I browse old books of Penn, Avedon or Watson, I realise that they already tried stuff that I thought was new fifty or sixty years ago...

I'm glad you didn't mention film as being nostalgic bc it's still a very cutting edge technology especially with many popular TV shows & within the movie industry especially big box office ones.

I'd say that probably the majority of respected art photographers shoot on film. Probably fashion photographers too. It's still very much a contemporary medium.

I was Born in 2000 and I Love the 80s. I dont know what it is about the time but I just think everything was just better. I Love 80s music and cant hear modern rap or smth any minute without wanting to shut down the music instantly. And I think that especially modern communities are so desocialised. When I Listen to Stories from my parents who were born in East Germany, they say that everybody was much closer and deeper connected. I feel like thats why most people think everything in the past was better. Its about how relationships has changed in the last couple of years. Especially in a World were we are so digital and connected people seem to be more distant than any before. So thats why I think Nostalgia could be the solution for some of us who doesnt seem to fit in this time and It could Provide a completely new view on todays sociaties and ways of living.

I also meant to say... we got onto the subject as I was saying about an old book that my dad found in a jumble sale and bought for me. It was a retrospective of one of the news agencies and had loads of photos from the 70s and 80s that had accompanied big stories of the time. We wondered how we would take the same images now bit with modern staging and attire. To make a photo that emulates something to trigger a memory but to not look like the image you would remember... but close enough to hold your attention.

Thanks Jamie, enjoying your channel. I have been using a Lumix G3 for years (old, I know....) but my love of mirrorless has to be realistic as my wallet cannot handle anything newer. :) I have been using vintage lenses on it and it really opened up photography for me, and made it affordable. And the nostalgic (and sometimes awesome) pictures these older lenses provide are great, and what is better is having to manually focus and adjust aperture. Gives one pause before just snapping away. Not for everyone I know, but I dig it.

Honestly love your videos man! Really thought provaking and original! Love that you clearly put so much thought, time and effort into making your videos not only tell a story for your audience that is engaging but also share a learning point! Too often we try and imitate others work because they are great but actually many of them as you say are great because they did something original and didn't try and imitate others. Awesome video!

Came here for the photography tips, stayed for the always on point cultural critique :) I am definitely on the same page with you regarding nostalgia, and more specifically this obsession with the recent past... so much of contemporary photography seems to just be chewing up the successful ideas from the past, but what they fail to take into account is that at the time that those photographers were doing it, it was nothing but nostalgic. The work so many photographers try to emulate now endures not because it was built on the previous one, but because it was modern and of the now and depicted the era it was made in. is there anything harder than being original though?
