How do you express love to someone you care for when you are NOT with them? Is analog letter writing obsolete in this era of digital technology?
In the wake of her grief from losing a loved one, Alessandra Nicole makes an appeal for tangible handwritten letters as artifacts of value and permanence. Pen pals and building connected relationships over time through the mail is a way of sharing that has lasting impact where communicating via social media falls short.

Alessandra Nicole is German-born and raised in Delaware who has been working on the east coast of the United States as a commercial photographer and writer since 2001. She attended the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia where she studied illustration, film-making, and creative writing. Many of Alessandra's essays have been published in magazines local to the northeast region of the US. Her documentary photography in NYC on September 11-12, 2001 went on national tour as part of a larger exhibit in 2002, the events of which have contributed to her compulsion to archive history and moments on a personal level using still and motion photography and writing ever since. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Letters ARE like "time machines"...it takes you right into that moment. For a few minutes you can literally exist WITH THAT person...know their thoughts...know their feeling...there's truly nothing like it! Great Talk!!!

I consider myself to be very blessed to have known my paternal great-grandmother. Although there was a vast age gap between us of approximately 70+ years, we were actually quite close while I was growing up. I have in my possession numerous cards, short notes, and letters written to me by her spanning over six decades until she could no longer write due to arthritis and loss of cognitive abilities. Not only are they a connection to the past by providing genealogical data about my father's side of the family, but I also consider them to be historical documents relating events and information about the times in which she grew up. She was born in 1892 and passed away just eight short months of her one hundredth birthday in 1992. She had also written a diary (of sorts) describing some very personal events that happened in her family. Just imagine the historical events that occurred during her lifetime, not only in our nation but all around the world. Two world wars, the Depression, the advent of radio and television, the first American to land on the moon, and numerous presidencies here in the United States -- just to name a few. To me, those documents are priceless, and I am never going to get rid of them for as long as I live.

Alessandra, I just sent two forms of communication from California to 2 friends in Spain by U. S. Mail. I sent them hallmark greeting cards enclosed with key chain souvenirs! Trying to bring back nostalgia! I like how you said letter writing is an art form!
