I hear ya, D. They're one of a handful of artists who usually sound better live than in the studio. They're wonderful at mixing their songs in the studio so that they sound the absolute best that they can sound, but you can't get perfection without this level of awesomeness at it's roots. I'm seeing them in London on May 4th for the first time, and I am beyond excited 😊

Pentatonix always puts non-Christmas songs on their Christmas albums. This is an anytime of year song. Thanks for the reaction. They are amazing live.

As much as I like Scott’s wide range, I absolutely love it when he sings down in his low baritone range with full chest voice like when he is doing the Italian in this song. It’s sooooooo beautiful. Also, I think you hear Matt more in live performances than the official videos. I love that too! I think they dial his voice down when they mix the official videos. Give us more Matt!

As visually beautiful as the official video is, seeing and hearing them live, standing side by side behind a microphone can give a better, clearer view of exactly what each one is doing/singing…no distractions. THANK YOU!

One good thing about the “Covid live” performances is they can get the mic balance right. That doesn’t always happen when they are on this morning shows.

There are so many parts that sound EXACTLY like the studio version, that I can understand why people think some of their live performances are lip synced (and I know they don’t, so don’t come at me LOL). They are beyond incredible.

I love this version of The Prayer. I did notice they used a backing track to add some of the background vocals to fill in the sound. (Since it's all their voices, the backing track doesn't bother me any.)

And once again they prove that they can do it just as well live as in the studio. No, this isn't better than the official video. Visually the official video is stunning in a way that this can't be - whoever designed that set should be asking for a pay raise. But you're talking about their performance, not the set, so let's talk about that. And again, no. This isn't better than the official video. The audio in the official video was recorded in the studio, as it always is in their official videos, and then they lip-synched in the video. But what "lip-synch" means for Pentatonix is slightly different from what it means for everyone else - they actually sung the song while they were recording the video, to keep their rhythm intact and to make sure they were synchronized with each other, and to make all their movements genuine, and then that video was put together with the audio from studio recording, so what we have in the official video is the studio recording. You're correct that this is different. No one is lip-synching here; they're performing the song live. And to my ear the sound is identical to the studio recording. Not worse, not better than, identical. Pentatonix aren't in a competition with themselves to make better and better live videos; they're good guests on talk shows, who give stellar live performances for the benefit of the audience, and then answer questions from the hosts. And because they're so very good at what they do those live performances are just as good as their official releases, which makes them the perfect talk show guests.

It sounds identical to my ear too. Which does make me wonder if it is. They did several "live" performances during covid where they were in one place and the show was in a different studio. That's just how it was during covid. But I do wonder how much of it was actually live singing. That phase of covid was a weird time.

@@margretrosenberg420 I don't recall seeing any of the rest of that show or any of them. Back in those days, they appeared on several shows, all of which seemed to be pre-recorded. One of them definitely was because they kept disappearing and reappearing in front of a different microphone. I doubt that they were teleporting. 😄 Another one had different lightning in odd places. The background lights changed from off to on and back again at random points in the song. But stuff like that will happen when you are filming 5 different people at 5 different times. For a while in there, they weren't even around each other. Just one of them at a time with a skeleton crew. I give them credit for managing to do anything at all.

@@mmg8823 They did much the same thing with "Daft Punk Medley," which is practically Babytonix. They recorded the audio in a closet, for the acoustics. I seriously doubt that they were all crowded into the closet together to sing, so they were each recording a separate track, which is how they do it in the studio now. They recorded the video at a kitchen table, so they were lipsynching the video, the same way they do now. But one of the items on their list of things they bought with their $400 budget was a SINGLE ring light, and we see that light behind each of them in the video, so they also recorded each video track separately. And all of this is AFTER arranging (which Ben Bram seldom does alone) and rehearsing; I wonder how many hours they put into that one song. I get tired just thinking about it.
