Today we check out how Eugene Ryabchenkos foot technique, the pressure swivel technique works and how you can first start out practicing that double bass technique.
Eugene is discussing the 3 main things you need to know in order to get this technique down (it doesn't matter if you are using a chain driven pedal, a belt drive or a direct drive pedal like axis, trick or czarcie kopyto).
This is the technique Eugene uses for tempos faster than 200 beats per minute.

After playing drums for 10 years and trying to perfectionize the swivel technique, my leading foot started to give up two years ago as it became misaligned/asymmetric. This has resulted in several issues with my right shoulder, right hip, right knee and a misaligned right foot. I can't even run anymore. Some physical therapy and dedication will bring me back, but I will not swivel anymore. Of course, the drumming itself was not the issue, but the way I played did bring about some physical shortcomings as I have very stiff joints. Make sure to take care of your muscles and joints as much as you practice, and work really hard in the gym to increase your core strength.

Would you say its a nonsustainable technique in general since the body is made a certain way? Do you have any ideas for a design alteration to the kick pedal for it to be less fatiguing to the body?
@brohan24
@brohan24 3 жыл бұрын
@@notyetskeletal4809 I've been using this technique for years, and have no issues whatsoever, aside from the occassional tightness in the ankles and knees after practice when I push the tempo a little too much. Most of the people who get injured just have bad technique or "harsh" practice routines, in my opinion. Prioritize control over speed at first. Once you're able to control the motion comfortably at 180-190bpm, which may feel very awkward and extremely frustrating at first, you'll then be set to dial up the speed. Just be patient. Took me 3 months of daily practice to be able to control this motion at slow tempos, but it was all worth it. Make sure to stretch before and after practice. Also, record your feet! 🙂

Forgot to mention that you should also tweak your pedal settings. Wouldn't recommend too much spring tension if you're starting out. Find what's comfortable. Check out James Payne's breakdown, as well as the stonekiller exercise, which is very effective as part of said exercise isolates both feet. Again, prioritize control. Speed will come.

when you played swivel tech did that effect your physical condition later on? for example did playing swivel tech cause your joints to be stiff etc etc etc

I don't even want to try swivel. Its too much movement for me. I'm learning ankle tech and once I get longboard pedals I'll stick to heel toe

This is the type of stuff that makes a REALLY good teacher. Someone who can not only play. That’s just one factor....it’s a given. But someone who can break the concepts down physically and mentally in order to instill knowledge. That’s the key component...

The best thing about Marthyn's channel is his commitment to teaching and educating folks about these different techniques. It's not just short clips of someone playing fast double-bass, but it comes with analysis and explanations! Great content, man. Keep it up! You're becoming a legend - not necessarily from your music but because of the valuable knowledge that you're sharing with the drumming community 🙂

You two and james payne and wanja are the best double bass people teaching wise on youtube. I've been learning from you all for the last year and a half and you've changed my life. @@ArnyWar it will. Shes the best. She had a wreck as a passenger in a car when she was 15. She was basically almost split in half. L-3 basically shattered. Theres a lot of nerve damage. Married her 3 years later and she could walk and do normal stuff and was super independent. Such a motivated person. We had a long discussion before we got married about how she knew this would become a problem as the marriage progressed as it's a condition that'll get worse over time. I saw today coming 9 years go but it's still a bummer. I'm just glad shes never given up on me or herself. Hopefully our band will get going again after this transition. She sings and plays piano and samplers and I just drum haha. I've never seen a lead singer in a wheelchair. Shes still stoked on the idea

@MarsHolst20 totally! I will. I dont get to see too many people without a virus going on cause I have to work from home so I can be around her. I get what you're saying tho. As an adult you need to make time for u. Life isnt going to. In our marriage we are both bad at making time for ourselves. So we both decided to be sure to do it for each other. Like shell surprise me with a hotel stay by myself for a weekend or I'll make sure she has money in her acount to take care of her current goals. We tried the hotel just for her thing but that doesnt go well. At least we tried it. She says she gets alone time when I go so I get it, but it could just be her being selfless. I'm just so amazed everyday at how good she is to me and how crazy it is that shes able to change with me so fluently that its beyond my understanding. Seriously marriage is you and your best friend plus sex and commitment and paperwork haha

@MarsHolst20 yeah cranked spring tension ( if that's the setting you're talking about) is definetly something to work towards. I'm skinny as a rail and it really got me focused on working out outside of practicing drums. Helps a whole lot and now I'm almost at 80% tension but I don't think 100% is for me cause it's great for speed but I'm trying to find a group of settings that works for every bass drum technique. Maybe I'll change my mind when I have the muscle to push down a spring at 100% haha. Good luck on what you're practicing! Being fluent at double bass is something that's so much fun once u get your legs feeling equal and it's off to the races.

I feel like I'm pretty good at heel toe but can't generate enough power. I use to have a Pearl Demon drive that I got good power from and switched to the Trick Dominator's which are nice but don't have the power of the Demon Drive's. I am definitely going to try and learn the swivel technique as it seems to generate more power.

Correction: is not necesary the high spring tension, you can use low tension and the beater in a diferent angle like 30 degrees and it works well at this degree because the resistance is increased when You oush the pedal or make a stroke so it has a good rebound
