In every playthrough I do of Prey 2006, I always play the video poker machine until I get a royal flush(the odds are clearly juiced in the player's favor). It's my little head canon I've made up that Tommy finally wins enough money to get out of that town just to get sucked up into outer space and his life turned upside down.

Good video, but I want to clarify something: If you talk to most 'Native Americans' or 'Indigineous peoples' in the US, they themselves will often refer to themselves as 'Indians'. It doesn't bother the vast majority of them. They don't see anything offensive or condescending about the term. In my personal experience, they find it goofy and, to some extent, mildly condescending if you call them some of these other, more modern terms instead. I've never had any get angry about it, but some would get visibly annoyed, while others would smile about it or laugh at it. If in doubt, just refer to them by their tribe. That's always a safe bet. Edit: I notice now others have addressed this as well. I apologise if this is a redundant post.

While I’m Saponi nation not Cherokee I still remember seeing this game on the discount rack and immediately buying it thinking it was so cool to have a game with a huge focus on indigenous folklore and it ended up being like the second game I got every achievement for. My mom had remarried when I was younger and we moved away from my nation and into a small extremely white town so I didn’t get to experience much of my people’s culture and just getting stuff like this that even when it was about a completely different nation it was still pretty cool at the time and is honestly still one of my favorite games.

Great stuff! It's true that John William Galt's voice-overs for all the different 3D Realms and Ion Storm games was a little controversial. He played a black vampire hunter in Nocturne and Lo Wang in Shadow Warrior. I can assure you, he did all those voices with love and respect to the fictional characters he was bringing to life. He was a big fan of imagination, and was very proud to have been able to lend such a diverse voice to so many things. In this game, he was the voice of the Grandfather, a few bikers, and the radio announcer talking about the aliens before the SHTF sort of intro. He was my father, and a good dude. Don't let him being a fat white guy born in 1940 Jackson Mississippi throw you off. Racism is all in your head, and disappears as soon as you don't let it get in your way. 4:55 most Indians, by and large, refer to themselves as Indians. Not native Americans. Not natives. Though I agree it was a colonialist mistake, it would be a mistake to today not include them in deciding what they would like to be called. No hate, same team, just disagree with not using the term they prefer. This was a phenomenal video by the way.
@NthReview
@NthReview Жыл бұрын
I've talked with a lot of natives and they do accept the Indian name because, well, it's hard to do any commerce or work with the federal government without respecting it and the sting is kinda the least of all evils considering how poorly reservations are maintained and supported and their culture appropriated, etc. And in the time since I made this video, I do realize it is not as offensive a term, and in fact is accepted in some part, but it's not the preferred name for those I know, who do prefer "indigenous" or "first nations". It's not worth a turf war or anything, it's not something I've found myself fundamentally offended by for reasons we both understand, but it'll never be a term I use because, well, it's just not accurate.
@pr3historic647

*copied from another reply of mine* I'm Native American, born & raised in a close-knit tribal community. Can't recall anybody getting mad @ being called "Native". Also, while true we call ourselves "NDNs", those like me who end up in large cities are very perfectly okay with ditching that term, considering how confusing it is to people from India (i.e. my wife's family). It's funny seeing people act so defensive about it tho, b/c most of the people who do aren't even Native themselves and don't really know how diverse all the different Native tribes actually are, and end up sorta stereotyping us all as holding the same viewpoints & opinions as a result

The thing about faith is that it is exactly that: Faith. If there were proof or evidence of a God, it would defeat the purpose. You can neither prove nor disprove it's existence.
@NthReview
@NthReview Жыл бұрын
That is a logical fallacy. All claims require proof. The burden of proof always falls on the claimant. If you cannot prove that God or anything is real, it is already disproven because it hasn't been proven in the first place.
@robrick92
@robrick92 Жыл бұрын
@@NthReview Taking into account, only the existence of a Higher Power, all the other religious stuff notwithstanding, any point you make about the origin of the world or why it works the way it does, could be responded to with "God did it". Yes, the burden of proof is on the claimant, but for those with Faith, proof and evidence is meaningless. True Faith is Blind Faith. For people like you and I, that kind of faith is simply not possible. We need logic and evidence. Btw, thanks for the response. Loved the video. One of my fav games of all time.

The 360 menus look bad, but the PC menus are definitely better. This game also runs easily on integrated graphics by now too. Something I found out when I tried playing it on my old Windows tablet, and it played perfectly. I was definitely surprised by that. Because of the nonsense of the later Prey game being forced to be called that instead of something more appropriate, I call that game Prey 2, and this one Prey. I'll never forgive Bethesda for making it so we can never see a legitimate sequel to this game. Don't get me wrong, I love that other Prey, but I'd been looking forward to the sequel to this for SO many years.

Prey 2006 is a masterpiece. The engine, the setup, the presentation, the technology (portals, perspective, gravity, scale). It also looks so much better than Doom 3 and hilariously vastly better than Quake 4. It's also more optimized (and less finishky to set to up) than either Doom 3 or Quake 4. If I have to mention 2 single negative points about Prey from a technological point of view, is that Vsync is very input lag heavy and the game is limited to 62 fps with no way of unlocking it (to my knowledge). Would've been glorious in 120 fps. It's also great that Prey, alongside Doom 3 and Quake 4, is also a PC FPS first and a console FPS second. Finished it for a 2nd time in 2021 at 4K60 and it was amazing.

Now? That stuff is fascinating and I have no use for the stuff I learned in any elementary science class. Boo-urns. Good stuff and you got a subscriber out if this video.

I don't what it is in this original Prey. It's not so-to-say spectacular in almost any level, but yet I enjoyed the ride insanely much. Puzzles are easy, but its good thing here, I wasn't looking to play Portal. Gunplay was quite fun etc. I suppose it is that the game is quite different from many others with gravity tricks etc. Btw I'm really surprised reviewer missed that switch at the bridge part. There's monstrous vent visible all the time. *edit* Looking bit further in review I recalled it. It was that the setting and game kinda changed constantly and ended right before things began to feel repetitive.

Never played prey but play the hell out of Doom 3. Though the one thing that always grabs my attention about Doom 3 and now Prey is that the guns and the environment look obnoxiously bulky and big for no reason. It's as if the developers were overcompensating for their engine but giving so much detail to everything around it in the game world. Ahead of their time because that's what they all do now with games lol.

By the way, combat in this game definitely feels much better on PC. Considering you played it on 360, I just thought I'd mention that. And I don't see how you think the combat feels anywhere NEAR as awkward as combat in Deus Ex. The combat in Deus Ex and Morrowind feels like crap. Despite the endless praise those games always get, the combat is TERRIBLE in both games. I'm not saying they're both bad. Just saying the combat in them is bad.
@NthReview

It's not just the pointing and clicking vs stick movement, it's how characters move around and react to your power and how the weapons feel, as I pointed out. I never compared them to Morrowind or Deus Ex because I know they're different classes, but even in the group of games that this Prey runs with, which is a far simpler shooter, the game feels awkward compared to its contemporaries like Halo 2 and Call of Duty 2

I've loved your content for awhile, I watched this when it originally came out. But are you telling me your 0 budget cat voice over Patreon propositioning was really a net success with the people 😂 Oh my dear gosh.... I won't be a hater, but I'm entitled to a vote. And my vote would definitely have wanted you to just hold your cat in front of your face, say "MONEY WE NEED, PATREON PEEZ". Can't remember this cat thing being in many of your other videos....I may have tuned it out. I might just be getting really intolerant to solicitation recently, whether direct or indirect. Don't worry though, it ain't a you problem, it's a me problem. Only externalizing to give my brain the illusion of some type of personally relevant, considered, social engagement before I work haha. I do really love your stuff, just the way it is, and usually I haven't minded KZfaq cat based solicitation, but man I guess today was just the straw for that. I somehow haven't been subscribed this whole time apparently so to make good on my slightly meanie bo beanie critique, I formally subbed and liked the video. I listen when I work most of the time, so I don't always get to engage things how I'd like to ideally. Although I try. Can't believe I hadn't subbed yet though, it's not make or break but my bad! This channel stands above so many of the rest. Thank you for your work. Your cat seems sweet. You seem great, your content definitely is great. Catch ya around.

So, unfortunately in this business of content creation, if we don't ask for something, we don't get it. If I don't ask you to Like and Subscribe - even if it's in a more subtle way than most - the chances of you doing it are less, even if your heart really was in doing so anyway. If I don't tell you that I can't do more of these reviews on a regular basis without your financial support, I don't get your financial support and then I only do 2-3 of them a year, which I absolutely don't want. Same with title/thumbnail. I know exactly what I WANT to call these videos, but doing so ensures that no one clicks on them. So, I get it, I hear you, and thank you!

@@NthReview I appreciate the time and effort you took to reply. It's a bitter scrap for engagement and people's consideration. It was one of the cutest solicitations I have seen in awhile 😂. Was not intending to fish for your attention with my own cranky personal rant. Probably would have been best journaled but it was heat of the moment.
