There are some films in which their story and structure lends themselves to being remade. “The Princess Bride is not such a film. What makes it such a great film is a confluence writing, direction, tone, and performances that creates a unique feel and experience which could not be repeated.

Bold of one to assume that anyone could ruin the Princess Bride. Its a great film, and adaptations won't change that.

Okay. I like that actually. Like, a super meta look at a studio that keeps trying to change the original vision of the book, but the Fred Savage character tries to keep the original vision alive.

@@paigekrome1141 - I think something like that is the way to go. Since the idea of the original novel is the "good parts version", a new adaptation would be Savage (either as himself or the grownup version of his character from the movie) wanting to introduce his kids to the source material, but discovering how much was left out, so our new film is just him reading the book and the new visuals are what he imagines the previously-unadapted material to be.

I would be so down for watching Fred Savage watch the princess bride with his kids/grandkids/friends mst3k style.

Honestly, English classes should have a mandatory unit on The Princess Bride.

I read the book for a comparative essay at uni (had to compare a fantasy book with its film adaptation). Can't recall much of what I said about it.

Both Goldman and the film's leading man wrote well about it. Check out Which Lie Did I Tell? By Goldman and As You Wish by Elwes if you can't get enough about this magical motion picture.

Honestly sounds like my family. My dad loves this movie while my mum finds it somewhat cringy. But it holds a special place in my heart and the heart of my family just for that bond. I just remember having a really bad stomach pain when I was around 11 and falling asleep on the couch with my dad as we watch this film at like 1 AM in the morning. Good memories.

Yeah, there are a lot of movies that I wish could get remakes because they dropped the ball the first time around, but obviously, those movies are not the ones that market well as remakes. Gimme a new Waterworld.

This move was geared perfectly to everyone without being preachy or pandering, just overall incredible writing.

But after watching the video Top 10 movies/film of all time from Watchmojo channel, The Godfather took the 1st place. I wonder why Avatar didn't make it in the list. Then I checked IMDB. Frequently searching for 5 main category Oscar nominees...which is Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Script ever since. And I still am. It doesn't have to be a winner, just nominated is enough for me to get interested in it. So, for the past few years, I've watched something like: It Happened One Night(1934), Citizen Kane(1941), Casablanca(1942), To Kill A Mockingbird(1962), Doctor Zhivago(1965), The Godfather both(1972,1974), Jaws(1975) Star Wars(1977), and so on..but never stumble upon The Princess Bride, yet. I'm still looking for any classic film.

That’s a reimagining, those I have no problem with. They basically take the source material and flip it on its head. Like: why don’t we have Treasure Island, but with muppets? But also in Space! Wait, Disney already did that. Alright just the muppets then. Now we have Muppets gong to Treasure Island. Did we need it? No. Did we ask for it? No. But now we have it.

Exactly. While funny, I didn't agree with Cary Elwes' comment that implied that a new version could "ruin" the Princess Bride. A new version can't hurt the original, nothing can--not even a thousand swords.

The problem here is that many from the new generation will be seeing the new film before the old one, so there is some risk of ruining or literally 'spoiling' the plot of the old one for new viewers, who will no longer be able to watch it with fresh eyes.

Couldnt have been commented better =) I have actively avoided the remakes of lion king etc. for the same reasons.

I really don't like spoilers, and even though i don’t internet much, I came across a lot of the memes about the movie and avoided watching it for the longest time, because I figured I wouldn't enjoy it because I had so much pre-knowledge of events in the movie, but a few months ago, I decided to watch it, and the movie has now endeared itself to me a lot, it is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I just love all the campiness, the dialogues, the deliveries, the acting, the set pieces, the action, the directing, the story, the writing, the everything, but most of allthe mushiness, I love it so much. Anyway, thanks for making such a nice video about the movie, it was informative, and while I always prefer books to movies, it might just be the opposite in the case of this adaptation.

That's a big problem with those kinds of memes and clips. A lot of great classic movies get chopped up and people don't understand anything about them other than whatever little bit they've seen floating around, and it can lead to some serious misinterpretations.

Imagine a meme movie in 1987.

Yeah, like, I would probably watch a remake of it, because that is the kind of person I am, but, ultimately, it will be impossible for it to do what the first one did in terms of legacy.

Would be very much possible- even pretty easy, actually- if the original film is still around. That is one "remake" I would 100% buy. And not just for myself, either. I'd get at least 10 extra copies to give to family, friends, coworkers, anyone really.

My dad also had the novel, which i started to read but then got diatracted by hia grimm brothers collection. I loved trivia about the dark origins of fairy tails even then and couldn't pass up a chance to familiarize with more of them.

Also i didn't start off wanting to rewatch. I noticed it and commented about my dad making me watch it. She asked what it was about and I couldn't really explain which reminded me of the start of the movie and i insisted she just had to watch it and bagged the adults to help me make her watch it. And that's when i realizwd i did actually like it

I appreciate that! While games are obviously the core of the channel, I like a lot of stuff, so it means a lot to know that this unexpected stuff is still appealing.

Films were always made with the intention to make money. I don' think that has changed. What has changed is that the studios no longer trust the teams who do genuinely want to make good media to do it on their own. Everything must be approved via the Studios' idea of what will sell.

@@TheHardFandomLife I think they meant the ONLY intention is to make money. There has not been a great movie made that was not created to bring about some particular vision and share it with others. In order to make a decent film you must recognize that it's purpose is to tell a story, t o transport the audience into someplace other, or even someone other. Many producers today have not done the work on the fundamental elements of storytelling, but seek to farm content from already proven popular ones, and think that applying some formulaic timing and eye candy visuals will make it something people want the same way those original stories were received. They have hype and release dates set, announce casting decisions and preview costume design before they have a f'n SCRIPT. And then have the audacity to be surprised or disappointed when it doesn't get the love they expected to cash in on. There are so many stories yet to be told on screen, but they have no interest in crafting new journeys. They think that tweaking the old ones or touching up the look of it qualifies as something new, but it doesn't. Why would I want to see the Disney films I loved in animated form be re-imagined in live-action? It is not a new experience just so I can ooh and ahh at the cgi. It doesn't make it better, or even different enough to be worth seeing at all. I did the Jungle Book because my mother wanted to see it, and was barely kept awake because the story wasn't something I needed to experience again. I won't bother with any others even as a freebie on the internet. I'd rather watch the originals with that time. Filmmaking used to require a healthy degree of faith - GOOD filmmaking still does. You have to have a story that wants telling first, then a script which effectively tells it, then you must find the cast and crew to bring it to life in the artistic design that vision demands. If you cast people that bring the characters to life, it doesn't matter if people knew their names before or not, because they will be known AFTER. Do the best you can do with the right tools, even on a budget and you can believe that the money will come if you craft something decent enough to tell the story effectively. Nobody wants to risk investing in the unknown anymore, and that though, is really what art is and greatness lies in bringing attention to what was unseen. Perfect example is Deadpool vs Batman V, Superman. I predicted the fate of those two films immediately upon hearing how Deadpool finally came to be. And that was a KNOWN property that had a tappable fanbase that studios still seemed reluctant to mine. I saw the leaked footage, knew they had a script and vision first, as well as enough LOVE for the character to take risks in MPAA ratings to stay true to the right way his story should be told, and I said it would be a better film than the Batfleck hype and anticipation would ever develop into. Deadpool broke records and BvS broke a lot of fans hearts. I loved Batman as a character, didn't even know who Deadpool was and I knew it would go that way. Deadpool is one of my new favorite things because they did the proper job of telling me a new story, and I loved it. Budget and expectations so much lower and SO much better to watch than the other. At least television has come back to form after the reality tv blight. And I will not set an eye on any remake of the Bride. No. Never. Not. Nope. No. I'd happily watch the original three times over than see a new version even once. I like that journey the way it is ... Perfect.

Yeah, when I was reading The Princess Bride, I definitely wondered if Danielewski drew any inspiration from it. I am sure that there are plenty of other stories with a similar frame, but I would not be surprised.
