There are Two stages in everyone's life: Before seeing Princess Bride, and After!

When I was in high school we had a class called Consumer Math. The teacher taught us a lot of useful stuff about checks, credit cards, and other useful life stuff. One day he said, "Today we will be watching this movie, simply because it is the best movie ever made." And I have to agree. I don't remember that teacher's name, but this movie will always be with me.

"I wonder how many takes it took to do this?" They literally rehearsed the sword fighting scene, making it longer and more complicated as they went, throughout the entire course of filming the movie and only shot the actual duel at the very end of production. It was a phenomenal effort and one of the greatest ever put to screen. Peter Diamond who trained Errol Flynn, and Bob Anderson who was a literal living legend of screen swordsmanship at the time. The two of them worked with the leads constantly. Every time one of the leads was away from the camera they had them with a sword in their hand and practicing.

"My name is Ignio Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." "Stop saying that!" Lol!!

Fun fact: The most perfect ending to the movie (Or any movie if you ask me), of the grand-pa saying "As you wish" to his grand-son was NOT part of the movie originally and they had to film that line in reshoot to include it... I know: INCONCEIVABLE! Right? 😜

Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) lost his RL father to cancer shortly before this movie, and he said when he said the line "I want my father back, you SOB" he was saying that to the cancer.

I had my grandma watch this with me since she hadn't seen this before and she could not get over the princess's name. Buttercup?!! Buttercup?!? Thats the name of a horse! 😂

I went to this movie in the theater with my whole family: mom dad, younger brother and sister. I was 14 at the time and when told we were going to see the Princess Bride, in true 14 year old boy fashion, I protested vehemently. And in true 14 year old boy fashion, I ultimately lost what was never a debate. I loved the movie that day, but after all my protesting said "eh it was ok.". The truth is that today it's my favorite movie of all time!! Great movie! Great reaction!!

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see ,Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and Labyrinthine 1986.

I yell (in a deep, Andre voice) "EVERYBODY MOOOOVE!" at least once a year lol

They played this movie at the downtown old theater. They did things like Grease sing along, Goonies and whatnot, the audience recited "hello, my name is Inigo Montoya..." every single time. 🤣

My mom showed me this movie as a kid. It is near and dear to my heart. Now and forever. Beautiful movie. Quote it constantly

Cary Elwes wrote a very entertaining and informative book, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. I think you'd love it. The audiobook is astoundingly performed, so, in this particular case, I suggest it instead of the print version.

14:33 This is my favorite line in this amazing movie. Westley says that with supreme confidence and without a hint of irony or exaggeration. He fully believes that no one else has ever survived it, but also that there is a 100% chance that they will make it out themselves.

You should recognize Cary Elwes from Hot Shots and Robin Hood Men in Tights. Fun Fact: Fessik, played by Andre the Giant, once had an 18 second fart on the set. When asked if he was OK, he said I am now.

This movie could have easily made Andre the Giant an evil brute, but making him a gentle giant was a perfect idea.

I don't know if you ever watched the sitcom, "Taxi," but the lady playing Miracle Max's wife is Carole Kane, who also played the wife of the mechanic on that show (Latka & Simka Gravas).

Andre the Giant had severe back problems, so when you see him lift something or someone, it hurt him a lot, so he was helped by harnesses, or it was a body double, RIP.

OK, this has got to be one of the greatest films of all time. It is always a delight, not just to watch it again, but to see others discover it for the first time.

Great pick up! You caught the left handed fuel. Never before done in the movies. Neither one of them could fence before the movie. They practiced every free moment and shot this scene on the last day. EVERYONE stayed to the end of filming just to watch.

My contest comment! One of my favourite movies. A little trivia for ya.... There really was a "Dread Pirate Roberts" (Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart) who operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century. He is reckoned by many to have been the most successful pirate of all time. Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene.

My grandfather and Peter Falk (the grandfather) both passed in 2011. Ever since then... that final "As you wish" gets me every time.

9:50 This is the best fencing scene ever shot, and contains the absoletely finest and most astonishing swashbuckling maneuver ever put to film. What makes it great is that the actors didn't just learn stage-fighting, they learned to fence, to dance, and to be choreographed around the specific terminologies of fencing because it has to be for the story to play out believably with verisimilitude because the viewer knows these actors really are that good with a blade. It's not like a movie fight but like a fencing exposition. In Japan there are people who study the way of the Samurai based on the old method of looking at a scroll that describes action and shows a series of poses that it explains how to move through each pose to the next. [Long aside:] If you look at such footage, by the way, you can see by the way the sword is held exactly why, at the end of the Edo period when the Samurai class fell and baseball was introduced, they were very ready to take it on and adapt it into their culture. Horace Wilson was a personal friend of Alexander Cartwright who first codified the original Knickerbocker Rules of Baseball was allowed to go to Japan in 69, as an English teacher and advisor about American culture, and in '72 he introduced baseball and by the end of the year an informal baseball league had formed. People who used to swing swords and throw shuriken stars, whose lives became empty when that purpose was taken away, could now swing bats and throw balls to defend their cities against rivals, and, of course, the swordfighter's mask makes a great catcher's mask. Baseball fit Japan perfectly and it actually arrived right when they actually *needed* it to fill a vacuum left by the swiftly changing culture of the new era. [And back to this] And that's essentially how they learned the moves. Each cut is as long as one choreographed portion was plotted to be. So Inigo went left-handed to compensate for the left-handedness of his polite opponent to make the fight fair, while Westley intentionally pretended to be left-handed to let Inigo think he had a chance. From the moment Westley reveals that he, too, is ambidextrous, each time one switches hands, the other switches hands to keep the fight fair.

My daughter was born by c-section and as they were wheeling my wife into the OR one of the nurses was running through a checklist and asked her if she knew who she was and why she was here. My wife couldn't resist and answered with the My name is Inigo Montoya bit, everyone but the nurse busted up laughing ant the poor nurse who happened to be the only one there that had not seen the princess bride was quite confused 😀

Mandy Patinkin is a stage, TV ("Criminal Minds") and film actor. He sings too. He starred as the character Che in The Broadway musical production of "Evita" with Patti Lupone ("Witness") and Robert Gunton ("Shawshank Redemption ").

This is the film that I most often give the title to whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is, and has been since I was probably around 13 or 14 years old. Always loved the humor, the romance, the action, it has everything. And I would watch it over and over again because it just put a smile on my face every time. Hilarious and heartfelt. Almost impossible not to love. (my dad hates it but he's weird)

I love how unsuspecting the cover/title is and how silly the movie turns out to be lol. My cousins and I watched it all the time growing up. Funnily enough, the actor who plays Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) was also on the show Criminal Minds which I loved in high school. Didn't realize they were the same actor until just a few years ago lol. 😅

It really is wonderful, isn’t it? Funny thing about Inigo saying he didn’t know what to do after being “in the revenge business for so long” and Westley suggesting he take the role of Roberts. Do you remember what the name of the pirate ship was mentioned to be? 😉

The little boy is from a show called wonder years from the 80s and grandpa is Columbo the maybe the 70s. The Spaniard was on criminal minds cbs show from the 2000s.

My sister went to the cliffs of Moher (Where the cliffs scene was filmed) and said “Behold, the cliffs of despair” and everyone laughed it was her favourite day.

Andre the Giant looked down on 6”7. He was 7”4 and weighed 520 lbs. More than you think. If you want to get to know Billy Crystal, I recommend one of the greatest Romantic Comedies of all time: Another Rob Reiner film, When Harry Met Sally.

This movie may have sword fighting, princes, pirates, magic, and revenge. But at its core, this movie is just about a grandpa bonding with his grandson. There are talks of a reboot. And I think it can only work if they follow the theme that it's a storybook. And being read a story can change the way it happens in your head. I think a reboot would make a great comedy if they cast the storybook characters with A-list celebrities, only to have them act under the control of a silly narrator, or a child who makes them say and do ridiculous things. That could work.

Andre The Giant was 7'4 and 500 pounds. A huge person. His back was so bad at this point of his life he was having trouble just standing and walking. The scene where he catches buttercup was done with harnesses. He was amazing. Maybe a reaction to the doc done on him recently would be 😎 too. I enjoy your reactions 🤘🤘🤘

Andre's billed dimensions were 7'4" and 520 lbs. As someone that is 6'2" and 350 lbs, I feel those dimensions are probably pretty accurate. His hands alone are 8 pounds a piece heavier than mine. Lol Looks like you enjoyed this one, farm kid! Cheers!

The duel is one of the greatest adventure film sequences. I teach a film as lit class in high school and use the duel to teach action sequences in the adventure genre and how it can also teach you a lot about the characters. I also pair it with the Jack Sparrow/Will duel from Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl. To my surprise it always gets a lot of great discussion, at least more than I originally expected. When I ask specifically which of the two adventure action sequences does the better job of emphasizing plot and character it gets especially heated-- I am the teacher that will let my students argue for an entire 70 minute class if they make great points regarding the films (or books, depending on the class).

A wonderful adventure fantasy comedy. The movie was also based off a novel by William Goldman. Rob Reiner is a brilliant drector as was his father Carl. I still remember Rob famous role of "Meathead" on the sitcom "All in the Family". I saw the great talent way back then in that star studded cast. He father broke ground on that TV series. Plus I'm a big wrestling fan so seeing Andre the Giant was a treat!

Peter Falk (Grandpa) was on an iconic tv show you might have heard of called Columbo. And Andre the Giant was well over 7' and around 520 lbs...that's why he looks so massive beside other people because he was! When he wrestled, he controlled the story. He was a showman/entertainer but if he didn't want to play along, there was nothing they could do about it.

This is one of my all-time favorite films. I watch every film review of it that I can because I feel it is one of those movies you have to see at least once, but its better if you see it a dozen times. I absolutely love quoting this film. The characters are fantastic, the idea of having the grandpa read the story and providing breaks, the love story, the comedy, the satisfaction of seeing the movie through to the end, and so many other great things make it so fun to watch over, and over, again. I never get bored of this film.

@Awesome US Movies: Good ear, there. Veteran character actor Wallace Shawn, who played "Vizzini" in 'The Princess Bride,' was also the voice of "Rex" in 'Toy Story.' Shawn has played MANY roles, including "Zek, the Ferengi Grand Nagus" in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

This is a Classic. So good, and so much fun.

Seeing Young Fred Savage is so surreal. He remade his scenes with Ryan Reynold's Deadpool character a few years ago, where he gets kidnapped and had to recreate his scenes by force, meanwhile cracking jokes and basically giving commentary to Deadpool 2. It's very funny.

Andre the giant was at least 500lbs. There's a wrestler or former named The Big Show and he's about the same size if not more.

I met Andre the Giant when I was five years old in 1985. I was terrified but he was the kindest man I think I have ever met.

Cary's last name is pronounced "EL-ways". I hope you watch "Twister" soon. Elwes has a supporting role in that too.

During filming Andre let out a monumental 16 second fart that brought production to a stand still. The cast and crew were beset with a serious case of the giggles that ruined the next few takes. Eventually, director Rob Reiner stepped in and tried to get everyone back on track. He then turned to André and asked if he was okay. André responded, "I am now, boss.".

I see several people already commented on Andre's gigantic proportions - some giving different dimension - and it does depend on when exactly you are looking. Because he had a rare genetic disorder that caused his body to keep growing continually, he was getting bigger straight up until the day his heart couldn't support his enormous body anymore and finally gave out. By all account he lived life to the fullest, though. Loved food, loved drinking, loved women, loved entertaining.

Such a sweet, feel good movie. Another one I would watch when I was sick as a kid was the Disney animated Robin Hood movie. The one where they are all animals. I think I need to watch that one again. So good.

Chris Sarandon is the voice of ‘Jack, the Pumpkin King’ in “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” which is an animated classic. Give it a watch between Halloween and Christmas.

I was catcting up with your previous reactions but saw this HBO played a lot of movies on repeat and this was one that my brothers and I always watched togethe, mainly to see Andre.

I always felt sorry for the horse carrying Andre the Giant too he stood 7'4in Tall and weighed 520lbs.

Love your Bronco shirt. My dad loves Broncos and I have to admit I like them too. He bought an old one that needed to be fixed up when I was a kid but he hit a cow with it on a foggy day and that Bronco had to go to Bronco heaven.

One of the more clever jokes in the movie and the book is the countries are called Florin and Guilder. These are two different names for the same coin, a subtle hint that both countries are essentially interchangeable as the setting is much less relevant than the story and characters.

I never put that together that he played Rexy in Toy Story...So the whole time Im watching it I see Rexy 🤣🤣

Wallace Shawn has been an actor and voice over actot for over four decadeses he was the voice of Rex and Toy Story and his latest role is in "Young Sheldon" as Dr Sturgis but probably my favorite part of the film is Grandpa Colombo. Also you asked what our favorite films are for you to review I don't know if this is in your wheelhouse but mine is The Apartment from 1964 just throwing that out there

This is one of my favorite 80’s movies. One of my brothers favorite books.

Yeah! This is another one of my top 5 ocmedy movies! I read the book first and then watched the movie. I discovered them late in life but have seen it many times.

I saw this earlier this year on a big screen accompanied by a live orchestra. Fantastic!

14:54 This is a second take and they had to remake the dress. In the foreword to the novel, William Goldman tells of being on the set for this scene, knowing every word, every action, every movement, watching his descriptions come alive, and the fire burst out, exactly as expected, and her dress caught on fire, exactly as it was designed to do, it has flammable liquid on it to make sure it burns, and in the first take, William Goldman jumped up and screamed: "Her dress is on fire!" Which wasted the whole effort.

An inside joke about this film are the names Florin and Guilder. The guilder was the former currency of the Netherlands, and florin was the equivalent of the dollar symbol.

During the duel at the top of the cliff, they are referencing actual fencing texts - capafiero, Agrippa, etc.

The shows Billy Crystal was in was called Comedy Relief, a fundraiser for hungry people. Don’t you just love books? The Princess Bride was based on a novel of the same name. It’s very funny, too.
