Fun fact: the filmmakers asked author Meg Cabot whether it was okay that Mia's dad would be dead in the film and his lines given to the grandmother, because they had a big actress in mind. She asked who, and they replied Julie Andrews, to which she said, "Oh my God, kill the dad!"

I love Julie Andrews, just wish they'd changed more things so they made sense! That Mia's father wasn't just a prince but the king after his father died (as his mother was only queen by marriage) even if he didn't get crowned before he himself died. I know the US gets royalty things wrong more often then they get it right, but the fact he was never considered a king bugged the hell out of me in both movies ;P

I loved with how kind and understanding you both were while talking about this movie! It's been one of my comfort movies since I was little. I also loved that you guys said that the makeover scene wasn't necessary. That stereotype that curly hair and big brows and glasses make you ugly is so damaging, and it's definitely dated, but I get what they were doing. I went through a similar makeover during the summer when I was in high school (I've been told a couple of times that I look a bit like Anne Hathaway), changed glasses, did my brows, cut my hair, bought new clothes, and the next year literally my friends passed by me and didn't recognize me, I was the ugly duckling before. Also, the cat was actually Anne Hathaway's cat, that's why he's so chill. And that scene where she fell down in the bleachers wasn't scripted, I'm sure so many people have already pointed it out, it's like the Aragorn and the helmet scene xD Hope you guys watch the sequel!

oh man, the books are so good. like, completely the opposite direction of the movies and yet disney managed to capture the energy really well. Mia's dad is alive in the books and rendered sterile by testicular cancer treatments, so she does have an established relationship with her royal side of the family at the start and her father is in her life, but her grandmother is awful. Like, chainsmoking, 30's pencil eyebrows, has a shaky overbred toy poodle named after a US WWII general, throws constant shade at Mia's mom, etc. Mia's dad bribes Mia into taking princess lessons by donating $100 a day to Greenpeace. it's a really interesting study of stylistic choices informing character too. late in the series, Mia is diagnosed with depression and goes to therapy and they kinda re-examine the events of the books thru the lens of how depression operates. her highs and lows are a lot more purposeful than they appear, even with the extreme pressure of a royal appointment. that one hadn't been released at the time of making the movie. i'm not sure it would have changed much because 2001 was not an era that understood mental health wealth. and the books do take place in NYC! lol i have no idea why disney changed it to SF

29:12 I went to middle school with that girl, the year I moved to San Francisco. She didn’t really get to enjoy the fact that she got a speaking role in the movie; she’s Hector (Joe) Elizondo’s niece, so of course all the petty teenagers in school just gave her a hard time about “getting things handed to her” by her famous relative. We were almost friends-I and several others tried to get closer, to form genuine friendships-but I think she was too afraid of people taking advantage. 15:43 Random thought here: From my experience, whenever a guy went "Hey __ likes you!" I never took it serious because it seemed like they were just saying that to embarrass their friend so it didn't seem genuine. Like it was a joke to make fun of him and sometimes it strangely felt they were also making fun of me. Kinda as if part of the joke was "haha let's see if she believes it". That was my experience since it would happen with guys I didn't really know and sometimes it was just a joke. If your friend actually liked me, have him say it himself don't yell it at me as I'm walking to class or something. That was my rambling Ted Talk, thank you. Btw, nice videos buds :)

Same here, but since I was a fat kid at school I thought they were saying this to mock me instead, pretending a friend was interested in me so that I would believe it and then they'd laugh etc. Which did happen a couple of times, so bc of that, I just rejected every single time someone said "hey, my friend ___ likes you", because I immediately assumed it was a joke on me and I couldn't show signs of weakness or it'd be worse. This led me to even nowadays as an adult, always believe people are mocking me when they show signs of romantic interest. So I immediately reject even now, idk why, I just have a hard time believing someone would do it seriously.

@@heyitsmira17 thankfully, this didn’t happen to me, but, I am the same way in regards to feelings directed at me, especially as someone who was also one of the fat kids growing up. I swear I love this movie on its own merit, but the books were everything to me as a kid and they were wildly different. Book Michael Moscovitz was and remains THE blueprint for YA romantic interests. More interesting adaptation changes if you're interested - in the books, her Dad's alive and she kind of knows him and her grandmother but not very well, and the reason they tell her she's a princess is because he had testicular cancer and therefore couldn't have more kids so she's his only heir! Also her grandmother is the exact opposite of Julie Andrews, she's about as close to a villain as you can get without being the proper antagonist. She's absolutely awful in the best way possible, and this version of the grandmother is completely unrecognisable to the book version.

I will never forget. When I was in 4th grade (long ago) we had an officious, awful teacher. One sweet girl in the class jumped up out of her desk and started heading to the door (the bathrooms were accessed out in the hall) and the teacher stopped her and demanded she come ask for permission to go. She was in front of the teachers desk and she said, "May I please ..." and that was as far as she got before she spewed across the teachers desk and all over the teacher. I'm sure it was mightily embarrassing for her to have thrown up in front of the class, be we all cheered in that moment, and she was hailed a hero as that is what we thought the teacher had coming to her and exactly what she deserved.
