at my school, the only dresscode rules are all undergarments must be covered (bra straps are ok though), your bottom must be fully covered, and no midriff should be showing (but this rule is commonly overlooked). we get our education just fine without a ridiculous dress code.

He'd probably just show you a copy of the rule book, and remind you that you and your kid signed the agreement to comply. I do believe the penalty is harsh. The punishment should fit the offense. Maybe detention, or "I will not wear sweatpants in class" x number of times. At work you can't wear em there either, unless you work at a warehouse, which is usually very lenient. I'm not for uniforms, but students do need to learn to dress appropriately, especially since employers in most cases have dress codes also.

Let me clarify a few things for you... -Kid riding her horse to school...yes, thats unorthodox, but it's not against the rules. The principal even said he appreciated her making an effort to come to school even while her car wouldn't start. Essentially, he would be punishing her for making it to school if he did punish her for riding her horse to school. -Regarding the kid who got lunch detention....the principal was going to give him an on campus suspension, but he was able to bring his pants back into code by filling the holes up in his pants in exchange for just getting a lunch detention. This kid wearing sweatpants couldn't do such a thing because it was all about the kind of pants he was wearing, not the condition of his pants. I get that stapling and taping your pants is a Iittle too far, but that was just their reasoning. -Regarding the kid who had the spurs on...he wasn't using his spurs as any sort of a weapon, he just was wearing them as a fashion statement. Plus he was very respectful of it. I've been out of school now for almost 17 years and even my work has a strict dress code policy, so they're trying to let these kids know that in the real world, they're gonna have to have that too.

No sweatpants probably as attempt to influence students' attitudes about their education. "If you dress better, you're more ready to learn" kind of mentality. It's one of the reasons some schools have uniforms. Not that I agree with it...

I do agree it's a stupid rule that people can't wear sweatpants. I can understand no immodest clothing, no shirts where the stomach shows and no sexually explicit, pro-drug, etc clothing. The only reason I can of why no sweatpants wouldn't be allowed is due to sweatpants being easy to fall down whereas pants with buttons are hard to fall down. People shouldn't be pulling other people's pants down to begin with.

My school claims to have a dress code but nobody ever follows it and none of the teachers care. There are some girls that wear shirts and their bellies are completely showing which is against the school policy but nobody gets in trouble for it. I always get away with wearing tank tops and outfits with spaghetti straps and things that show my shoulders at my school just by wearing black cardigans on top of everything. The only dress code policy that I know of that people have actually gotten in trouble for it my school has been wearing a bikini in swim class
