Notice how when they sing "I could hurt you, I could hurt you", only Mary follows up with "but I never ever ever ever would".

Poor Mary. So sheltered and awkward because of it. Her father being so tough on her yet so loose and “fun” around others. I relate to her a lot, more of seen and not heard. Mary isn’t even let out of the house for any of the many parties Prince Bolkonsky goes to. She DOESNT EVEN HAVE FRIENDS SOMEONE GIVE ME THIS WOMAN SO I CAN SHOW HER MOTHERLY LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

So much of what I love about this musical is encapsulated in this song. The music structure speaks for itself, but the characterization makes us understand the character before we despise them for their flaws and wrongdoings, which is what it’s like for most of the musical. The angst love and fear in both of their hearts is palpable.

I love how nearly no character in this musical is either flawless (well, except for arguably Sonya and Mary) or evil. Even Anatole's actions are somewhat understandable (though not redeemable) once you realize how much of a spoiled hedonist he really is. And Natasha and Pierre, who the audience is supposed to root for, both have quite a lot of flaws. It makes the characters feel really human and I love that!

@@thegreatshootingstar7794 I personally found the characters to also be divided into three groups. Who is living according to the archetype that society has granted them and have found joy and kindness in that: Sonya and Marya, (Natasha is trying to maintain the archetype) while they're rooted in convention as people it keeps them straightforward but nonetheless happy. Then there are people living in desperation and selfishly: Anatole, Helene, Dolokhov and then Pierre has nothing but the potential to be better but is tortured by his inability to practice forgiveness towards himself, but he is constantly practicing it for others who don't deserve it. He wants to be better than his circle, He's not fighting in the war or doing anything considered important and everyone knows how unhappily married he is. Most of all he feels like his life is practically over because of this. The Bolkonskys are living in the status quo and in desperation because of the aging and passage of time. Anatole while being no good also has a backstory and while it may be shallow, clearly has some deeper yearning for Natasha(granted convention wasn't going to necessarily provide depth) in which he is going for her, no consideration for the consequences. It's not about how bad he is, it's about how he deals with the dreadful marriage that he didn't want.

thank you so much for this, I bet it was a hell of a work ! And as a non English native speaker, I appreciate the subtitles so much !!!! Sometimes the quality of the audio is not really good and I can't understand so what you did is such a miracle to me hahaha
