In The Problem With Apu, South Asian-American comedian Hari Kondabolu confronts his long-standing “nemesis” Apu Nahasapeemapetilon - better known as the Indian convenience store owner on The Simpsons. Creator and star Kondabolu discusses how this controversial caricature was created, burrowed its way into the hearts and minds of Americans, and continues to exist - intact - nearly three decades later. Featuring interviews with Aziz Ansari, Kal Penn, Whoopi Goldberg, W. Kamau Bell, Aasif Mandvi, Hasan Minhaj, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Aparna Nancherla
and more, the hour-long documentary premieres Sunday, November 19 at 10PM ET/PT on truTV.

@SportsFanatic314 Wrong. You're taking the movie out of context. In HAROLD AND KUMAR 2, a racist white lady on a plane sees Kumar, she has a paranoid daydream about Kumar being a terrorist, so she yells, "Terrorist!," causing Harold and Kumar to be wrongfully sent to Guantanamo Bay; it's in the trailer. The movie's making an anti-racist point. Context matters. And to @Vilatoro, who is wrong for taking the first movie out of context: A troublemaking white hooligan in the first movie says, "Thank you, come again," in an Apu accent to Kumar after the hooligan criminally ransacks a gas station. Later, after Kumar gets the upper hand against the hooligan, Kumar yells, "Thank you, come again!," at the hooligan, in reference to the hooligan having said it previously. And, to @ghostface93wu4eva: Kal Penn took his VAN WILDER role under duress because there would've been no other way to start his film career. The issue was, at the time, there was underrepresentation of South Asian Americans in Hollywood pop media; it's already nearly impossible to have a Hollywood film/tv acting career anyway, even for white people.

I’m going to be honest, I’ve been looking at videos of this guy all day and I haven’t seen one person who has attacked him who has also listened to what he was saying. He’s not saying Apu is a bad character or that the character doesn’t have as much depth. In fact he doesn’t really care about the character in question. The movie is more about the result of Apu, the Simpsons was so big that Apu, one of the few Indian characters in media, came to represent all Indians. He’s well aware that the show is about stereotypes and that every character is a stereotype, he’s just talking about having this incredibly exaggerated characature define what an Indian person was to a whole generation of Americans because there were so few Indian characters in general. If it happened today he’d probably find it less offensive because there are a ton of Indian actors in tv shows so Apu wouldn’t be how America viewed Indians. That’s more or less the point he’s trying to make.

iih its just the principle of his removal. A so called comedian can’t realise character satire in one of its most obvious forms. He claims he likes the simpsons but ignores all of Apu’s character development. The “comedian” has reduced Apu to a stereotypical accent. I'm Indian and I love Apu he's a better role model than most bollywood protagonists. He's romantic, intelligent, kind and has a doctorate. All the women of Springfield wanted his chocolate thunder and he's a good husband and father. I always found the character well fleshed despite the initial stereotypical facade as is the case of all characters in The Simpsons, they're all stereotypes in one form or another. Some less flattering than others. To add to this: The majority of Indians are classified as being caucasian. By majority I mean the Indians in this video as well. They're not white, of course. But... it has nothing to do with race. It's about a funny accent ffs. Not their race. They should be offended about discrimination, or at least making fun of, a nationality. Not a race. They're complete morons. And in fact, this changes the whole matter. Plenty of comedians make fun of a bunch of European nationalities and countries without anyone being upset, so what's the difference here? There shouldn't be any! If I have a nickel for all the times liberal and right-wing comedians have parodied French people or Swedish people or some other nationality, playing a stereotypical character and doing a weird accent, which aren't always correct, I'd be very rich by now.

Exactly, I've made many of these points myself. I'm a little surprised people are even offended by him. As you said, he respects his own culture, but he's also a naturalized US citizen and a small business owner. He drives a cool car, is one of the few voices of reason in that crazy cast, and (let's face it) is punching way above his level in the wife department. You'd think Indian folks would kind of appreciate a cool Indian guy living the American dream.

The thing is every character on the simpsons is an exaggerated stereotype. Chief wiggum is a donut eating cop, patty & selma are the hated family inlaws, homer is lazy couch potato, italians are depicted as mobsters(fat tony).... the list goes on. Just remember, a talentless hack of a “comedian” like Hari murder Apu and then brainwashed Hank into believing he did something wrong. Nevermind Hari doesn’t “call out” the writers who came up with Apu’s lines and situations. And he seems fine with other stereotypes on the show (the Italian mob, groundskeeper Willie, Cletus the slack jawed yokel, etc) that may be offensive because he gets a laugh out of them. But hey, Hari got what he wanted: Fame and Hank a few weeks ago groveling for an apology, so Hari could care less to be honest or give a crap about much deserved criticism he and this harmful documentary get.

Yes, it certainly does! Because the lazy-ass ignorant whities, the show's primary target-audience - project his characteristics onto real-life individuals who "look like him". They are so much in their "First World" bubble that they ludicrously suck in Anthropology. And the entire argument is proven by the fact that many of your compatriots are using "but, but.. He sounds exactly like Indians!" as a defence-argument - that's like a murderer saying "but, but.. I helped the law by killing a bad guy!" (regardless of the statement's factuality). And thus, there's nothing else to prove reasonably.
