When I looked at my textured, acne scarred face in that store, I felt extremely anxious and it made me feel miserable for the entire week. I get what you are saying but this generation seems to be hyper fixated on skin care, you can definitely see it in the way people refer to aging now. Tik tok, Instagram and KZfaq content is demonizing wrinkles and fine lines because apparently you should have used this and that in order to meet the newer beauty standards. The thing is that people are not straight forward about it, but when a million comments ask about what retinoid and the 1kg sunscreen they should wear everyday from puberty till death, I’d say it’s pretty clear that it’s not necessarily about health, rather the appearance of a supposedly “healthy” skin.

I think my favorite part of this video was the irony of celebrities claiming passion for sustainability, yet their lines are just adding to the millions of pounds of waste plaguing our planet. Nothing like performative marketing 👍🏼😂🙃 As the daughter of a chemical and plastics engineer, I have seen and experienced first hand what a mess the industry is, but also how it has the ability to do so much better. In terms of the actual products, I admittedly have zero knowledge or experience to speak from. 😓 I have been extremely, extremely fortunate to be one of those folks who can splash water on their face every other day but look like a I have a 10 step skin care routine. (Please don’t hate me. 🙈) But, both of my sisters have struggled their entire lives with hormonal and cystic acne. Just seeing how much it has affected them, I can’t imagine what it must be like to live it. And to want something so badly (clear skin) that despite better judgement (it ain’t creams Kylie 💉), they caved to the snake oil salesmen out there. As adults, they’ve realized the absolute lunacy of the industry, and have invested tons of time and energy into actual research. I’m so happy to be able to say that they’ve each found routines that seem to work for their lifestyles and produce results they enjoy. Which is also something I think people need to realize- there is no one product, one line, one routine, one pill, one whatever- that will work for everyone. I’m sure there are celebrity brands that get ripped apart, yet work amazingly for some people. At the end of the day, it’s a very individual experience. But, in general, celebrity endorsed anything gives me immediate involuntary cringe reaction 😂 Love your vids!!

I tried Pro Active as a teen because I too had hormonal acne. Although it did work on me back then. However, in my tomboy teenage brain, acne wasn’t that big of an issue till I started getting bombarded by people around me and the TV telling me how UGLY it looked. Ugh, ppl won’t live n let live, and the companies capitalise on that. Anyway, really enjoyed n related to the video a lot 🫶🏻

I had to change a lot of doctor before they actually went away ( i still have scars though) , it didn’t help that i have bad allergy problem too

I always found that by my parents not really letting me have any internet or just general media access until I was about...11? I never really encountered these sorts of marketing and social norms that I otherwise would as a child. I never really had too much anxiety or felt particularly ugly due to my poor skin from acne and the fact I don't fucking take care of my looks in general, but I also never realized how much others cared about it, and also had such a warped view about it. I get disliking acne, I tried to control mine too, until I stopped caring enough to even wash it regularly, but like, bumpy skin makes some people feel bad about themselves? Or even that light smattering of acne some people have, where there are just some small red bumps like freckles upon their cheek; people have strong opinions on? Honestly, I find it attractive when someone has rougher skin, man or woman. Maybe it's just because my mother has acne scars (like me because we both have underskin acne) so I just thought that was the norm to have rough, porey skin. Well, ya learn something new every day. Even if it is somewhat depressing, which in hindsight, it usually is.

Glad your parents protected you from exposure to unnecessary media when you are still growing up. Children and young people can be very impressionable. It takes a whole community to raise a child and many parents have allowed media (TV, magazine, KZfaq, etc) permission to influrnce their children. As much as we try to downplay the effect of what media we consume and expose to children, we can say almost say that there is a whole new generation that is growing up with tiktok and developing a shorter snd shorter attention span.

As someone who grew up with dermatitis I lost count of how many people told me my skin looks dry and I should moisturize it better as I wasn’t doing that already🙄. It’s a skin condition, it can’t be cured through moisturizer. Luckily my skin has mostly cleared now that I‘m 20.

im so glad someone spoke about this , cuz this needs to be addressed. celebrities are easily able to afford those highly expensive skincares , surgeries and makeup products. they low-key are the reasons for the development of insecurities in us , which makes us think we aren't beautiful enough. but i guess being beautiful inside is more important. looks are just external. to whoever reading this , you're absolutely beautiful & stunning. you're unique in your own way and i hope you get over all your insecurities and love yourself to the fullest. thanks for bringing up this video. love you Ibrahim

Genes, money, and privilege, just like you said. There's nothing more, and this is coming from someone who has "good" skin. I've had friends ask me about my skincare routine and I'm like, I literally don't do anything. I realized it's most likely due to my genes. I've seen people use all kinds of products and it helps some, but not everyone. The so-called skincare routine is mostly a scam, and the way it's become so normalized is concerning.

In a way, this video couldn't come in a better time for me as I have booked my first esthetician appointment next week after years of dermatologists, few rounds of Accutane, multiple lab tests and acne still making living difficult. I am pretty scared of going out in public after treatment with bare face - not because I'm ashamed of my acne (having it for more than 15 years, you get used to it and it just doesn't surprise you), but I'm afraid of looks/reactions I'm going to get. The acne stigma is a real thing and what's even more real is people judging you for having acne without any knowledge about your life, medical history and if you're treating it or not. Yeah, someone with no acne history whatsoever or those who inherited good skin genes will NEVER understand someone battling acne for years and their advices about 'doing something about it/I'd never go in public if I had that/don't care about it!' are really unwelcome and not working. It's a good thing some creators are spreading awareness about how the real skin looks, but...on the other hand I can't hide my inner cringe seeing that a total normalcy has to be explained (and even defended!) to the masses who believe in glossy, filtered ads of celebs with their skincare lines who are regulars at best dermatologists/estheticians/plastic surgeons and who have best makeup artist at their beck & call.

Look people, if you want this "celeb skin" just go to a skin clinic, use good premium skincare products, eat healthy, have dozens of editors to make your picture look "perfect", workout, etc. This is how they look that way, because they have a reach to each of these things easily cause they're provided with it. So in the end, achieving this skin is quite impossible and just be happy with what you have. Textured skin is normal and that should be the norm

Even if the skincare is “nice” why would I trust a new celebrity brand over a brand with YEARS of “experience.” Skin is nothing to play with and I’d rather take my chances with an established brand even if I do like the celebrity marketing the brand 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

It annoys me bc it pushes other brands that don't have the $ for a pretty campaign or big celeb... It just seems like leveraging an audience quickly and easily which is marketing and has always been a thing with celeb endorsements. like you said it's all an illusion bc they have access to high end procedures and skin care. Small businesses don't stand a chance in the future if the various industries are being flooded with celeb lines that are more popular

Absolutely amazingly described what celebrities are doing with people's emotions. I created a whole video on my acne journey on my channel and I understand it is not that easy to achieve that unrealistic glass skin. You are right, It doesn't exist. All we need is to make people aware of their real beauty. Whatever kind of skin texture they have, it is perfect. The more we run after a perfect skin, the more harm we do to it and to ourself. Just eat right, sleep properly, and stay focused on your work.

Totally agree with you! It is odd that they all come out with skincare lines suddenly rather than promote what they ACTUALLY use. It’s obvious it’s about the money and the market is saturated af. Also, I’m in my 30s and still fall into the trap of wanting “perfect flawless” skin. I get annoyed when I can’t cover a pimple or my under eye is getting fine lines… I love seeing others real skin so I remember that everyone’s (almost) looks like that….SKIN!

I'd also like to add that a lot of people naturally have small amounts of hair on the areas of their face that we traditionally think of as smooth like on your cheeks or forehead, your chin for some women and more commonly on your upper lip. For some reason the media represents this idea that your face is supposed to be hairless apart from designated areas like your eyebrows or chin area (if you're a man)
