What's up my fellow Guitarists? Today, we need to address a massive issue in our community that's been unspoken for too long. Join me as we dive deep into the toxic aspects of guitar culture that no one seems to be discussing. From the "jerk guitar guy," to hyper competitiveness, and even the straight up bully, it's time to shed light on what's been hurting Guitar Culture.
Today, I'll share my personal reasons for starting guitar and how one's abilities on the instrument seem to tie into self-worth. When your self worth is wrapped up in other's perceptions of you, that's a fragile ecosystem for your mental health, and breeding ground for people to put others down.
The problem with Guitar Culture is probably most apparent when we look at the KZfaq comments section. I'll go over the top 5 meanest, and in some ways, hilarious hate comments I've received on my channel.we uncover some of the most toxic and hilarious hate comments.
Finally, I'll offer practical solutions to combat negativity in guitar culture. By genuinely loving the instrument, channeling insecurities into practice, and remembering that being a bully is counterproductive, we can foster a more encouraging and inclusive community. Try and remember, music provides an escape, a safe place, and a place to belong for many. Let's try and foster a community that builds that for guitarists of any age and skill level. Be sure to Like, Comment, and Subscribe to the Channel!

What's the most ridiculous comment you've gotten on your channel?

My favorite comments were on the first video I made where I played my pedalboard barefoot. The hate that got was unbelievable. Also, my acoustic guitar video has so many opinions that crack me up, mainly that I don't know the woods of the guitars I own... hilarious.

My channel is about Blender 3d and not guitar (I'm hoping to start a guitar channel in the not-to-distant future) but the most ridiculous comments I've gotten are when people say what channels they like better than mine. It's really strange. Like ok, then why do you keep watching my videos?

Not on youtube, but on a reddit pedalboard post when I linked my soundcloud to give people an idea of the type of music I create with my gear...some dude said, and I quote - "I checked it out and it’d be great for like the advertisements of an unpopular dating app but mate, that’s crap… Not even being mean, I’m telling you for your own good coz that’s just shit" LOL like what does that even mean? It quickly became evident after a few more comments this dude was either a flat out troll or just completely off his rocker, but thankfully his comments were met with a hoard of downvotes and a handful of encouraging people saying they really liked my work, which balanced it out some hahaha

I like that i have something i can forever get better at for the rest of my life having one song working on it since i began playing shoving every part i think of into and letting it rewrite itself constantly like a unfinished project. Moments of clarity i find being an artist creating music is just wonderful. I hope everyone enjoys music as much as i do. I got beat up in elementary school.

I'm an old boomer guitarist. I'm proud to be. I have been playing for 53 yrs. I'm skilled. And yes I play at church. I'm proud of that too! I started because I wanted to be a rock star. I think that's very common for those of us who started playing when rock was still new. I've never regretted for a second my choice to be a guitarist. When I watch other guitarists play, I'm very complementary. The guy that was the best guitarist I knew, instead of being jealous or saying "oh I could play better than him". I asked him to teach me. I learned a lot. I loved your video though. You had some great points.

Love the honest talk. Certainly we could all do better for each other but again it’s a phase I guess that most of us go through. I’m guilty of it, however the more you mature in music the more you appreciate it as well as other people’s hard work. I truly believe we should encourage each other when we have the chance, positive criticism is the best way to go. We all have weaknesses and strengths, therefore we won’t be experts in every area or genre. Love this videos, keep it up!

Thanks, such a nice video. I'm 30 and started to play guitar seven months ago and also started a YT channel(in Russian though). Completely self taught, without investing huge time in it, learning and doing videos when I have the desire to, not forcing anything. Tried to make my first covers with my guitar + rest of the parts written in FL studio. Last one a cover of Seven Nation Army, can be found on my channel. And I'm regularly facing hate comments or comments from people who think they can better. People have much hate in them and don't understand that in the internet there are the same real people who will read your comment and not like it. When I comment I'm always thinking "what if this comment would be addressed to me, would I like it?". Hope people become more mentally adult some day. Also people try to force me to play 8 hours guitar a day, as if the world would end if I don't. Sometimes I'm so busy I can only spend an hour in a week, but at least I'm spending it with pleasure.

Great video! I wrestle with those insecurities too but have learned to let them pass for the most part. I think that no matter how good you are, there's always somebody better. I play in church too and have played with much better musicians than I am. I try to use it as motivation to get better and learn what I can from them. They're usually great people and not anything. that I need to feel threatened by. Your comment about not having our identity wrapped up in the instrument is right on. Our identity is from our relationship to Christ and everything else we just do the best we can at. Keep on keepin' on!

If i try playing louder i break strings more easily. Folks also sometimes make fun of me while filming me. Busking feels vulnerable. I am ashamed i still am afraid to change my own strings.

It wasn't a KZfaq comment on one of my videos, but it happened IRL over 3 years ago, I was at the guitar store I frequent a lot, playing an Ibanez RG that I was planning to buy (the very same Orange RG I use on my videos). At the time, it was only a little over a year after I decided to play the guitars again, after more than 5 years of not playing and had only played for 2 years, prior of quitting. Never had any formal lessons, nor did I had the capability to pay for one, so I knew nothing about chords, let alone music theory. I was chilling with the guy who was working there, and a customer entered the store and came up to me and called me by my name. I was surprised because I don't even know him, and he mentioned that he also studied in the same Secondary School (Our high school equivalent), so we had a casual chat. After that, the dude picked up a Jackson Soloist (iirc) and he proceeded to relentlessly shred scales up and down, without any context, for what felt like an eternity, the store clerk decided to put the headphones on and I was just sitting there, nonchalantly browsing on my phone. After he was done, I decided to pick up said RG again and play the song I was learning at the time, albeit unplugged. He walked up to me and said something like "Stop playing nonsense melody. Do you know the Major scales? Play me the Major scale", and I replied "No, I can't, because I don't know what that is". All of a sudden, he decided to berate me in front of the store clerk, sayings stuffs like "If you don't know the major scales, you might as well just stop playing the guitar!". I stayed quiet with an awkward smile on my face, the dude kept on trying to get the store clerk to agree with what he had said, but he also stayed quiet with an awkward smile on his face, albeit behind the counter. He was the storm that was approaching (sorry, had to squeeze a meme in there ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)) and it went just as quick as it came, the dude left after he was done with his business and the store clerk thanked me for not causing a scene. After awhile, I decided to go home, not with an angry feeling but with a perplexed one instead, and was wondering what could have made a person to become like that? How had he forgotten that he also started from zero? To this day, I still use that event as a motivation, and now I understand chords, and modes even. Thank you, random dude who claimed to have known me, I hope whatever you were going through or whatever was torturing you, had come and go, and you're in a better state of mind now. p.s. During the time the dude was chatting with the co-founder of the store, as the latter was soldering the jacks of the speaker cables for the former, the dude went on talking about how WW2 was a conspiracy and it never actually happened. The co-founder had to tell us about it after he left, because it was such a bizarre thing that he had to listen to, me and the clerk chuckled for a bit after hearing that. So, yeah, it was a bizarre day for me and the guys at the store.

Oh man, this is so good haha - love these perspectives and I'm with you 100%. Unfortunately, my cynicism about the world makes me feel that so many guitarists don't have the emotional intelligence or maturity to introspect on this level and change their behavior. The internet/social media keyboard warrior culture of being able to hide behind screens makes it all sooooo much worse - gives people the extra boldness to say things you know they absolutely would not in-person. If only they could put their insecurities aside and realize the joy that comes out of being encouraging and uplifting, and making online FRIENDS instead of enemies haha. That obviously goes for life in general outside of guitarists, too - the world is such a better place when we expend our energy lifting each other up, instead of tearing each other down in an effort to get ahead!

I've never been a country music MD, though I have assisted an MD on a couple of country projects. I'll have to add that to the cue. I think sometimes an MD's intensity can be misunderstood, but there is a line between pushing to make you better, and just being discouraging. But from what you've told me, I'd say the MD on your gig was actually pretty laid back- Maybe you should write him a note?

A lot of truth to these principles - I gravitated to music for similar reasons, along with a pure fascination with all the possibilities to be discovered and combined creatively that could elicit emotion. Grounding yourself by maintaining a focus on the pure simple reasons is the key to authenticity, shrugging off arbitrary criticism, and not making it a primary foundation for your self esteem. The only thing left is a bit of encouragement, so don't give up.

Mean comments are better than no comments. People usually only ever do or say anything because they feel like they have something to gain from it, whether or not they actually do. It's a pretty big compliment when musicians go out lf their way to project their insecurity on to you, personally. It's good to think this way, in a pragmatic sense, especially since people are always going to do this anyway...and it's them with the problem. Not you.
@Missingnin69

No, people aren't always going to do this. If more messages of inclusion are talked about and men talk about their emotions more, we can definitely at least in our own spaces make it clear what's tolerated and what's not. Nobody's making thousands off hate comments, better to delete hateful messages while making vids like this to help set a healthy example for the community

@@Missingnin69 Yes. They are. No matter supportive of communities we can build and surround ourselves with, which I agree we should do and condone, especially if you're a musician, you're still going to run into people who try to bring you down. That's the unfortunate pragmatic reality of human society and it's light years beyond hopelessly naive to think it can ever completely go away. You're better off learning how to not let it affect you negatively than to bank at all on being able to avoid it 100% of the time.

@@Kaanzekin well I'm in the fountain pen hobby and people are way nicer than the average guitarist. I wonder why? Btw it's a community that has more women than the guitar community 🤔 You're right that dicks will always exist, but insofar you're in control of an online or irl communal space we can police their existence (not legally ofc unless something criminal occurs), just like you wouldn't hang around a dick in a friend group. Also, perhaps we should express emotions about getting hurt by things as it's a healthy way to deal with suffering instead of trying to "pragmatically cope with it", albeit to some degree everybody will have different ways to cope with suffering.

There's another aspect of guitar culture that breeds bullying which is toxic masculinity. This has nothing to do with guitar per se - only that culturally, sonically and aesthetically the guitar has always been attached to masculinity, popular with men, and so it's no surprise that in its playerbase we can find some of the worst traits of men.

Guilty myself of, in particular, disparaging the church guitar community as somehow less-than. It’s entirely due to having spent the better part of 18 years playing in the church and growing increasingly frustrated with what I perceive as a greater focus and worship of gear, sight, and sound over the one supposedly being worshipped. But that’s unfair to let that result in a poor view of the art being produced by the people involved. If we’re all being honest, we’d kill for the tone that most of the people in that realm are getting.
@NedJeffery
@NedJeffery 11 ай бұрын
So I went to Hillsong, and as a teenager got lessons from Mike Chislett and Nigel Hendroff. There was definitely a vibe from the orbiters in that group that would just fawn over the gear and get a rush from playing on stage. But the thing I learnt from the guys themselves was they were not interested in that stuff at all. They were just there to serve in church like anybody else.

@@NedJefferyHendroff feels like the poster child for what I’m talking about though. The need to Instagram your board every ten minutes is infuriating and inspired a whole generation of social media gear whore. I’m glad to hear he’s not like this behind the scenes.

Guitar culture. You don't need any gear to play any music. Just notes and an instrument. To record it you get a sound engineer. It seems a lot of people collect musical equipment these days. They're collectors.

Certified bruh moment. If you want a certain sound and/or tone, you achieve that with gear in electric guitar. Acoustic and classical are different, but with electrics we have and should use these different guitars, pedals, and amps.

@@josku5 different gear can certainly change your sound. However, I think what spinz is getting at is that there's perhaps an unhealthy consumer or collector mentality whereby some guitar collectors overfixiate on aspects of gear that doesn't directly change technique or impact sound. Ofc, I still think it's a shame that those who can't afford better gear won't get the opportunity to express themselves as easily and enjoyably.

@@Missingnin69 I agree with you here. I was just replying to him saying ”you don’t need ANY gear” which is IMO completely false. But yeah beginners might go down that rabbit hole of getting better gear and hoping that it somehow makes them play better.

But really? you think this is a guitar culture problem? Isn't it a human being problem. Most people are competitive ass holes and they are taught to be that way by their parents, the educations system and places of work. But the internet and social media had amplified it 1000%. Peoples egos are getting bigger and bigger. "Look at me look at me, see my selfies and hear me spout crap about how great I am and how great my life is. But the sad reality is, its probably not that great and they are riddled with anxiety about who likes them and how popular and followed they are. If you can take the attitude that you are who you are and you don't care what anyone else thinks it makes you less judgmental of others. However I suppose I am judging your content because I think its not a guitar related issue. But I respect you for taking the time to make your point. One last thing thought. Every youtube video you watch, including your own, ask yourself "Why did this person actually make this video".

Have you considered atheism? Sure we can be a pain too, like Christians and everyone else. But I can promise you way less judgement and it has the added benefit of being correct.

"less judgement" "we are right and you are wrong" 🤔

As an atheist, I'd say this guy doesn't speak for all of us. I'm an atheist who values Christianity and religious culture even if I don't believe in it myself. I enjoy ccm and gospel music, and agree with certain Christian moral teachings like that of helping the oppressed and aspiring towards universal equality. The elitist attitudes that some Christians may have aren't any different from elitist attitudes in music non Christians may have. Anyway, no idea how we'd go about quantifying "less judgement" except through anecdotes. Of course, I'd encourage any Christian to engage in philosophy of religion and be aware of atheist arguments and perspectives, and likewise for atheists on Christian culture. But this doesn't have anything to do with the video topic, does it?

@@NedJeffery I don't even understand what that means. I should hope everyone thinks they're right. How would someone believe in something he/she/they know is not correct? It's counter to the English language. But yes. As you pointed out, I do think I'm right and I think religion is not only incorrect but harmful. If you saw something in society that was very harmful, wouldn't you speak about it? Wouldn't you maybe even be kind of a pain in the neck sometimes? I get it. We're always in the comments, always arguing. You sigh and roll your eyes. But this is important stuff to me. I want to fight against this thing that, to my perception, is a great evil. I honestly apologize if I've been annoying. I don't like annoying people but I will.

@@Missingnin69 I couldn't dream of speaking for all atheists. Someone once likened that to herding cats. Y'know, because cats are so independent, they just don't herd. But I also like gospel music. CCM, not so much. But that's just my opinion. If you like it, great. Well, I guess you're right in that there's no really rigorous way to measure the amount of judgment coming from any particular group. But I mean, c'mon. This is the religious we're talking about. That's like, their whole thing. I don't know who this guy is. Maybe he is the perfect ideal of a Christian. But maybe he's not. Maybe he's gay. Or maybe he's not gay but just really likes to wear women's clothing. Maybe he really likes death metal and to wear black clothes. Or maybe he wants to smoke a joint every now and then. Maybe he's okay with a woman's right to choose. I think he'd have a difficult time with any of those in almost any church unless it's UU but that's the same thing to the other churches. And I think it would hard to find an atheist group who would care a lick about any of that. No, I guess it doesn't. It had nothing to do with the video, well, very little to do with the video and I brought it up anyway. Sorry? I guess. Is that... bad? I mean, as I was saying to the other guy, I get it. I know we can be a pain. But it's something that's important to me. If you saw something in society that you thought was very harmful, wouldn't you speak out against it? Even to the point of being a pain sometimes?
