I've seen so many "ilford delta 3200 film is garbage" posts online but is it really that bad? I recently blasted through a 35mm roll of it whilst in the US at Halloween Horror Nights and I have some feelings about it.

I don't like Delta 3200. It's close to hate, actually. And it's certainly NOT because of the grain. I LOVE grain. For night photography, I prefer pushing two stops instead. It's not that hard. I mean it's only time in developer that's pushed, nothing else. It's easy. And you find one developer you prefer and a couple of films you like and then it's just a matter of making a list. And sometimes it's even the same, or very close for your two absolutely fav films. Seriously, it's not hard. My fav films are Tri-X 400 and Fomapan 400. They're somewhat alike when you push them. The developer I use is Fomadon Excel, which is basically just off brand/copy Xtol, or so I've been told. One bag=1L=3 rolls of 135/2 rolls 120 in a Paterson 3 roll tank. I used to shoot with a Canonet QL17 GIII (40mm f/1.7). All handheld down to 1/8th of a second for the darkest shots, but 1/15th is easily doable. Portraits might look like they've been done with a shotgun with all that grain, but both Tri-X and Fomapan makes better pictures than D3200. In my opinion... It might be (with the D3200) that you have to scan through the sort of matte bluish antihilation layer, or is it the film base? I don't know. And I feel that the emulsion is thinner too. Well, that's just my experience. I feel like every photo I took with Tri-X or Fomapan "popped", but not a single one of my D3200 popped. It's just something about the contrast during the scanning process. But hey, if you can get it to work for you, I'm happy! (Though I DO think every photographer working on film should have a fumble bag, a tank and chemicals! And a good scanner. Even the cheapest Nikon USB 35mm scanner is pretty awesome for BW work!)
