Nespresso seems to corner the “premium-mediocre” market for coffee. Kind of like what Heineken was able to do for many years in the export beer market. From a pure business standpoint it’s an enviable position, but yeah it’s pretty bad. Basically enabling a certain consumer mindset creating an image that “*I’ve arrived* at coffee making”, whilst being the furthest away from it in meaningful reality.

I use an old fashioned Moka pot. A proper espresso machine, you need to make 20 cups to throw away to get the machine hot enough to get a proper extraction.

we have similar thing going on in Australia where instead of paying an extra money, I get 10 cents for every plastic bottle that I bring to the bottle collecting point. It's a good thing that led to a kind of a secondary services for olders ppl or homeless ppl to go out an collec from various sources making $$$ (it's not even pocket change, there are worse-paying jobs out there)

Same thing in Michigan! We get 10 cents for each bottle and can, but not every state in the U.S. has a program like it.

These wouldnt work for pods since people that can afford/use pods would not want those extra 10 dollars and unless it’s mandatory they wouldnt save up the pods to recycle and earn pennies.

Or an Aeropress. Almost exactly the same amount of effort but I find you get a little less grit in your mug and it's a bit easier to tune to your preferences.

people upgrade machines all the time too - i got one for £30 off facebook becuase they had upgraded. my mum had the same one so i knew how to use it. before i was paying £4 per coffee at costa. ehehe not anymore. and the beans i get ground in bulk.

I bought a cheap positive pressure type espresso machine that works on the same principles as the pod machines. They use the same cheap pumps as those machines do. The fact that they have a real 51mm Portafilter fitted means they have a good seal and don't leak. Actually not a real portafilter, they are pretend ones, the manufacturers go to considerable trouble to hide the fact that they have positive pressure, and not straight through. It also means I can buy my own coffee beans by the kilo. The cheap burr grinder was more expensive than the coffee machine. I get fresh beans, and fresh ground coffee, which means way better coffee than what I ever got out of a pod machine. The fact it's much cheaper doesn't hurt either. It's still not real espresso machine quality at its best, but if the coffee is not the best, it is at least consistently good, and I don't have to fuss. Still thinking of splurging out and getting a good one (read expensive) at some point.

beans lose their taste and aroma after 10 seconds of being ground (grinded? idk english isn't my first language lol). Getting beans and grinding them yourself will always make your coffee taste better, even if you just put them in a drip coffee machine thing after grinding them.

Yup, this is the solution to the problem, convenient, fast, and sustainable. Makes better coffee than the Nespresso machines as well. The machine is more expensive tho, but cheaper to run. Going through almost 10 mugs a day over here, bringing that Fiinish average number up😎🚀

They build machines which last 30 years+ , these are the first the sold 😉. Even if the entry price is very steep, it will last for generations. Very simple mechanic, made to perfection. You can easily maintain it completely by yourself

if you want to get the same results from the single use pod with the reusable then use 13g in the largest capsue 5g in the smallest and 9 in the medium size one since those are the exact amount of coffe grounds co[ntained in the single use coffee pods.

I bought a $3K coffee machine nearly 3 years ago to STOP buying K-pods, and STOP stupid Starbucks expensive stops, and its paid for itself several times over now through thousands of excellent freshly ground and perfectly prepared cups of real coffee, crema and all.

Only the dome shaped one's seem to need to be sent in but I can't see why since they are aluminum too.

Plastic can only be recycled so many times. Meaning even IF you do your part by cleaning the pods and IF your local government does their part and actually does bother to recycle, this recycled plastic cannot be re-recycled ad infinitum. I think 3 times is the max, then it gets dumped. Why don’t you just buy good fair trade ground coffee and a cafetière? No filters, no fuss. It’s a pleasant ritual and only takes about 5 minutes. Screw Nestle!

Sustainability reasons, LOL. So basically, Hamburg city employees are too lazy to drop the pods in a bag and send them back to nespresso for recycling... Or dropping them off at a local aluminium recycling plant. Germany's well known for it's sustainability, shutting down Nuclear plants and ramping up mining of coal, and whatnot.

For instance, some people prefer different strands, farms and countries -- coffee has taste; without it, speciality coffee would be absolutely pointless! It's all very subjective -- anyway, if people wanted a soda, I'm sure they'd get one. Some of us prefer coffee ;-)

By the time you wait the 4 minutes to steep and pressing it down, the water has cooled off way too much and now you're left with lukewarm coffee. Those presses are overhyped.

I bought mine through subscription and it's been 3 years now and it's working perfectly fine. Just like you said, I like how easy it is to have a cup of coffee without ending up with so many things to pop into the dishwasher. I have chemex too but I only use it once in a while because obviously I need to brew it myself and I don't have the time. I like the fact that I can drop a pod in, press it and then go brush my teeth in the morning and then get out of the bathroom and a cup of coffee is already there and it doesn't taste bad. I really don't mind the price of the original pods because it's still cheaper than getting one from the store. I'm willing to pay some more to have convenience

Makes sense depending on the situation. For example at home I like brewing in a more traditional way, but taking my own good coffee in reusable pods to the office and using the machine there is super convenient. For home use yes they're silly.

My dad got one of those pod-less espresso machines. Apparently it made some pretty good coffee, but it was also quite a hassle to set up and then clean with each use. All for one cup at a time. It was technically possible to get 2 cups per charge, but then both cups would be disappointingly weak, which also made the machine impractical for serving coffee to friends. That machine hasn't seen use in over 10 years now.

Those machines require a bit more work to get a coffee but the hassle is not that bad. I've been using them for quite a long time at home and don't feel the need to use a capsule machine. A small spoon is usually enough to quickly clean the filter. If you want/need to remove all coffee particles from it, a cup with some hot water should help.

Almost all of the big chains sell grounds and beans in their signature flavours, and there are lots of more socially responsible coffee distributors. I will never understand pod machines

I don't even drink coffee. I'm not saying I agree to that logic. But I understand people are lazy and they don't want to mesure stuff nor do several steps. The only difference I see in number of steps between a french press and Nespresso is flavouring.

I was just listing out coffee brewing techniques that are quick but also cost less than a Keurig or Nesspresso, a decent espresso machine tends to be expensive and takes up a lot of counterspace, but since we are here we can't forget a good pour over either, a good V60 is only takes a few minutes and produces a fantastic cup of coffee.

Ask yourself, 'If making coffee is so enjoyable, why is Starbucks so successful?' Convenience and time is extremely valuable. The pods cut out the measuring process, there's no pot to clean, and there's never a mess.

I love the Kalita Pour over! There's something so fulfilling about making your coffee by hand. Do you have the metal, ceramic, or glass one?

It's great, it's become my ritual to make coffee with it almost every morning, although I do have a French press as well. I got the metal one and their glass coffee server as well.

They do make very small size coffee paper filters, for those reuseable Keurig pods, which makes clean up much easier.

I only drink espresso myself and I solved it by getting a small espresso machine and a grinder. pods are a modern problem. use your pod money to buy a decent machine, mine was ~$300 and has been in my life for 16 years.

There are different pods with different coffee to make specific coffee brews. Sounds like you’re using an espresso pod to make a lungo (or larger) cup. Also the machines do need some kind of regular flushing/cleaning to help remove old grounds from the pipes.

The beans themselves are the problem, and until people don't want coffee from exotic remote areas where people are exploited for their labor it's not going to get any better No amount of complaining about single use disposable pods is going to change the fact that the beans themselves aren't good for the environment. Countless trees destroyed to make coffee farms in remote areas. These people are delusional if they think they can judge pod users. The act of wanting coffee has done more damage to the environment than all the current and future pods combined. Because behind every pod or bag of loose beans is the overall economics of coffee which you cant escape if you want coffee So i say enjoy your convenience let these other people waste their time and than feel better about not using a single use pod. They might have better tasting coffee but i know my construction worker of a dad doesn't have the time for that type of shenanigans and is using the pod for a better than pour over coffee that only takes one click and is single use so there isn't any wasted coffee after his pour.

Same here. But you need to find the correct set up (fine ground coffee, tamping pressure etc) at the beginning. Personally i have been using for 2 years the evergreen capsule, i love it.

Same here. I been using the WayCap for Dolce Gusto (machine brand also by Nestlé) and it works fine by me. They have reusable pods for others brands such as Nespresso and DeltaQ.

If you ever want to try a drip machine there are options for reusable filters, just rinse them off after use and you're good to go again. I've used them in the past when I drank multiple pots (not mugs, pots) a day and used one for several years without changing it.

Another less wasteful tools to make coffee is Vietnamese dripper and Turkish cevze or ibrik. I don't think Vietnamese dripper is available in Europe or America, but you can get those very cheap (around 18.000 rupiah, even cheaper than a french press). Turkish cevze is more common in Europe. But if you prefer a clean cup, then cevze is a no go because it doesn't have filter.

That's heartbreaking!! Hopefully over the years we will have more and more consciousness around what is compostable/biodegradable so that doesn't happen. Would a video on compostable materials be something that would interest you??

@@standupstraight9691 Exactly... and I'm not someone who bought out every day or even every week. We used less coffee grounds than a standard coffee maker for espresso too.

No reason to buy overpriced pods to be used once and discarded. I bought the VIVI SKY Reusable Coffee Capsules Discs, grind my own beans before each cup (one touch operation!) and reuse the same two Nespresso Vertuo pods for over the last year! And when I want fancy foam I preheat my cream in the microwave and then whip using a battery operated milk frother. Spent coffee goes into my flower/garden beds. It's way too easy. Sustainability "problems" solved!
