It's been well over a year now since we put together our insane Triple 65 Inch 4K Sim Rig. In the time since we've been working hard to improve the experience not only for you guys viewing the content but for the driver.
We've had a surprisingly large number of people contact us wanting to build similar setups, so today I wanted to set the record straight on the limitations of this system so you don't waste your hard-earned money on something that may not be everything you expected.

@@leem0401 Interesting. Because I have the compete opposite feeling about VR. I was a dork about trying to make VR comfortable because my wife vetoed the idea of three screens spanning the room. I drive mostly open wheel in IRacing so I built a rig in a reclined F1/Indy position. It’s really low, to the ground. The top of my 10” inch wheel is 29” off the ground. I have to quick release the wheel to get in and out of the thing, but it’s comfortable when in it. I keep the room cold and use fan to blow air across my face. I even clip a drink tube to my shirt.

20:25 Great demonstration! This also nicely shows that then the fence in your view seems to bend upwards in the bezel, your view position is too high relative to rendered view. Big car syndrome was very interesting. I have triple 27’s and have tried to mount them as low as possible to give me a true (or close to) dash view to help me with training for real life races in my caterham. I have a narrow diameter sim core extension from a simucube 2 and the middle monitor sits in the gap. So I can get the monitor lower where normally the wheel base shaft would limit it. Trying to get it feel like 1 to 1 In virtual to real size i.e. not like how you explained with the wing mirrors. Top video 👍🏻

9:20 You can get (or anyone looking to build something similar) panels, or "sheets" of frosted or smoked material, "plexiglass" like acrylic or polycarbonate stuff, that will help to diffuse and tone the overhead lights a bit. Obviously you could just adjust the brightness on the led strips, but that only gets you so much and requires specific placement, the panels would allow more freedom of adjustment and such.

Even using the most expensive prices, counting things they are using for streaming and 5 different wheels I can only get it up to 80000 AUD which is 51000 USD. That is why I got a triple 27 inch 1080p monitor set-up. With 27 inches 1080p isn't a problem and you can get them with high refresh rate. Mine are 144hz. Got them very cheap because they are just HD. All of them together around 700 euro. So just a fraction of the cost of a single monitor in this. Also because of the HD they don't need a super PC since all of them together are probably easier than trying to get image from a singe 4K screen. So you can use your console or a normal average PC without spending thousands. I believe that is the best way to keep things low cost for average Joe's like us and still have a somewhat similar experience. I think everything together with the rig, wheel etc built are arount 3000. Didn't get anything for shaking my seat or anything because I don't really want to anyway but I can get one for another 3000 and one that moves everything with 5000 but I don't feel is worth it. Anyway spending 3000 that is just a very small fraction(some buy a single GPU for that money) of this setup and getting a whole rig and triple monitors etc so you i can have a full Sim experience is a great investment. So I propose everyone to think investing like I did. It really is a lot more approachable and doable.

I would absolutely love to see what your ultimate personal rig would be. I got a SimLab GT1-EVO and CSL DD in October and within a couple of months upgraded to the DD1. I'm using it with an Xbox Series X and a 65" LG OLED at present. With graphics cards starting to fall in price I will be moving to PC as it was always the plan so a comprehensive end game build blueprint would be great.

here in Australia our general power outlets are rated to 10 amps however that is just on a single point generally speaking a power circuit will always be wired and protected by a 16-20A circuit breaker as long as you try and minimise the amount of power boards and plugging what you can into the wall it should never give you an issue

Great video, really nice to get into the nuts and bolts. Very surprised at power draw, my mind was thinking much higher (5.5kW), mind you with the current energy prices happy to stick to VR! I know this comes up a lot and isn't ideal for a streamer but my ultimate set up would be VR based with a second person acting as the streaming/community manager, allowing me to concentrate more on driving whilst said second person deals with community questions in real time and relays the better ones for example. (I say all this whilst being completely clueless as to what solutions exist out there)

I am looking to build a rig from the ground up. Rig, PC, wheel, base, pedals, shifter, triple 32” 1440 monitors, and I came out to around 9k US. I would call it high end for your average user. This however is on a whole other level my friend.

Awesome video, I feel like ambient lighting is a big deal that people don't use. As a side note, (and I'm in the usa). Do you really need to go 3 phrase to get more than ten amps? My knowledge (of circuits in general) tells me you can just replace the breaker and wiring with a larger size. Allowing far more power.

You can pull more than 10amps on a power Circuit, a PowerPoint is rated at 10a per plug but a standard power circuit in Australia you can pull 16a before you start to encounter tripping. Also, our voltage is now measured at 230v single phase

@FilipAus 2 жыл бұрын
I was looking for this comment. When I hear about needing 3 phase is completely incorrect. At very worst case, upgrade the cable in the wall and put it on a larger breaker (RCBO). But at 1800w you could run two of these rigs on the existing circuit.

1900W peak for the entire setup is actually pretty good. Back when I used to build computers, I built a dual Xeon machine with a 980, and 3 Xeon Phi coprocessors, and that computer alone used nearly 2100W. We had to use 2 EVGA 1600W PSUs on it.

Nice video, really puts the pros and cons of a rig like your in perspective, I am trying to work out what would be the best size screens for an actual 1 to 1 scale from the driving perspective, if it is even possible Thank you

It’s going to vary depending on the car but generally I recommend 32inch 16:9 aspect ratio screens.

Hey Will, great video, love how in depth you go into these things. Regarding that vertical sweet spot limitation, have you considered using a Track IR and setting it to affect positional movement only? That should introduce the vatical parallax that you are missing from the static 3D camera position. You may need to play around with the intensity a bit but in theory this should counteract the distortion from the screens.

Yes. It doesn’t work because it makes the dash move relative to the wheel.

Hey Will, picking this one up again, have you tried turning down the scale of your head tracking movement in TrackIR to match the real world scale of your head's movement in 3D space? This should stop the dash appearing to move relative to the wheel from the camera's perspective. It does mean setting the scale extremely low since your head only moves a matter of inches during a race, but once you dial it in the result should be seamless. Unfortunately this doesn't solve the vertical sweet spot issue, however it does introduce parallax into the cockpit which in my opinion is a subtle yet transformative effect. This would hopefully solve the dash looking like its projected onto a flat surface. Let me know what you think.

Yeah I’ve experimented with it extensively. Spent about 2 days solid on it. It makes the wheel look like it’s floating around relative to the dash the moment there’s any movement whatsoever unfortunately. Might experiment again when I have some time though.

Thanks for the fascinating video especially on the sweet spot of the GoPro head mounted cameras. Incidentally the bezels on the LG TVs are very small and I was wondering weather the older 55 inch LG C6 monitor would have had I better combination regarding the vertical sweetspot distortion because that was a curved monitor so three of those together or any curved monitor / TV's would be ideal I think?

In order to eliminate problems with head camera, you need a head tracker, 2 cameras fixed to the left and right of your head, mounted on the eye level, both should be connected to head tracker. In post with some overlap at the center and some crops to the sides. By this you would no longer have an issue of camera covering your view and no problems with straight lines since the cameras would be fixed at certain height.
