Schools say “you learn from your mistakes” then proceed to harshly punish mistakes. Therefore the system, at its very core, is anti-learning.

But yet also don't punish enough I graduated high school, and didn't do ANYTHING all 4 years. Passed tests through barely paying attention in class. I'd be told all the time that there would be consequences for not doing any work and yet my MOM would typically do the punishing which did NOT help my mental health. But that's cause she HAD to since the schools did literally nothing in response. If schools did any kind of effective punishment (who knows what that even looks like though) then maybe we'd see some improvements But what does a good, productive punishment really entail? How does that look on a student to student basis? Idk man

What I don't understand is how schools punish us for looking questions up on the internet, but encourage us to copy shit directly from the textbook; it's essentially the same thing. For some reason they would rather us regurgitate information from the textbook that we don't actually understand than look something up, learn more about it, and rephrase the answer you find it's extremely counterproductive

Homework was actually invented as a PUNISHMENT for students who misbehaved in class by an Italian immigrant who was a teacher in California around 1900. Then other teachers were like, “oh yeah, that punishment? That’s great, imma give that to everyone.”
@danig1066

homework shouldn't be given to everyone just because ONE kid got us all in trouble. If that's your only punishment, at least get the school to get something that makes you study during lunch instead of being with your friends. Plus it would be double positive because some kids could put themselves in if they want a quiet room.

It's just a waste of time. I don't get a long with most people well enough, and I'm more thorough with my work than most people. If the teacher wants me to work with other people, it would be best to just pair me with ONE other person that I don't know, instead of three or four.

I honestly learned more on the internet then I did in school. But honestly what makes a big difference is good teachers. I've always had nice teachers who weren't afraid to help me. I still have it today.

Been arguing this (to myself) ever since I left school for college. Then dropped out thanks to the pandemic and been unable to recover from the anxiety. The school system is directly set up to completely ruin the wellbeing towards students. Not to mention the bullying side of things. Should say something when places like KZfaq can teach so much more than what school could ever dare teach. The grading system even...They keep changing it! Not to mention the pressure to just get a C grade. Or Grade 4 (no reason it should've been changed so much!) just to "pass." Remember it changing 3 times when in the final year of school. If memory serves: not a single person in that very year passed. Not to mention the difficulty of each exam being ridiculous!

Every time I'm confused about something I'm too scared to ask the teachers, because they'll always say things like, "You should listened so you could follow the directions." which discourages the student and harms their grades. If I can't have a good grade on a difficult assignment because I don't feel safe even asking my teacher a clarifying question, that goes completely against the education system. When you learn, you're supposed to feel encouraged to clarify things with your teachers, and ask if you can do X or if I was suppose to do Y or print Z. I know this isn't all teachers but this is something that gets on my nerves, so I'm venting here about it.

True it's so infuriating when the teachers say "you should've payed attention " when we ask to clarify the subject we are learning on . @@iamliber8583I learned most of English by talking to other people, listening to how they respond, and reading books, once I learned how to read. (I'm not sure when I learned to read, or if I learned it from school, but I probably learned it when we went over phonics in first grade. I never went to kindergarten because my grandma didn't want me to for some reason) I did make friends in school, but I mostly got isolated and pushed away because I was different from just about everyone else and it left a lasting impact on me. I just realized fairly recently that that experience created trauma for me, and that I was also bullied. I'm not sure why it only recently clicked, though, maybe it was some kind of defense mechanism or something. Also, I don't buy into the idea that you can't criticize an imperfect system just because it did/does _some_ things right. If everyone went off that logic, nothing would ever get done, and nothing would improve. If there's room for improvement, there should be improvement.

Back in July when I had my final English exam, I was SO unprepared that it was scary to be in my position. Luckily I came up with a genius strategy to be able to use chat GPT during the exam. So during the exam, I think heavily on how I'm gonna write paragraphs to a question (like "Explain how love is presented in act 1 scene 4 or romeo and juliet") So I ask for a bathroom break and hide in the toilets and quickly retain as much info as possible quickly. For Japanese it's the hardest. Occasionally, my teacher leaves the room, so I quickly use this feature on my phone where I take a photo of the japanese test and translate it into English, and copy down what I think is right. The adrenaline I get is very high and I beg you don't have to do what I do

The thing is you bring up very valid points. Such as school not teaching very important things that everyone will use at least once. And the school system is obviously at fault for many other things too, but the actual knowledge that you learn from school is invaluable to people who want to succeed in certain career paths. Lots of people tend to say that school teaches you things you will never need to use, but in reality some higher paying technical jobs do require you to know lots of those seemingly random facts to be done correctly. If you want to get involved with mechanical engineering or architecture there is lots of difficult math and stuff like trigonometry and graphs. It really matters what you want to do with your knowledge which is why I perfectly understand why it’s not for everyone, but I wish more people would realize that the knowledge school teaches you isn’t useless it just has to be applied properly to real world situations in order to make sense and that’s where a college education comes in.

The city I live in (and the surrounding ones as well) implemented a rule where every school is legally required to start at 8:30 ...which is only 30 minutes later and considering my school is a 30 minute drive away, doesn't change the fact that I gotta wake up at 6:50am And because of that, I'm really tired all the time, and my vision is impaired when I'm tired so I can't see half the shit that's being taught

One of my teachers was really good at teaching and I was able to actually learn the subject material. However, most of the class did not especially because the class was so “easy” that they were on their phones all day. Here’s the thing, one of the other teachers that taught the same class, taught in such a way I couldn’t understand the subject material. That class was more engaged. I don’t get it. It’s like one teacher actually liked to be there making what he taught easy to learn even if it was a snooze fest, while the other teacher was the opposite.

Now personally, as someone from Belgium (Europe) I see we learn a lot of the same things, like in maths, but the approach is very different. Here I’m in a Catholic school, and every class is standardised. We get held on a very high level for this stuff, but I see it as a good thing. They don’t completely tank your creativity (but it still does a little). Things like ChatGPT aren’t completely banned, more of a useful tool, and the times are significantly better. In my school, everyone has to be there from 8:30 for the start, then 2 lesson blocks of 50 minutes, after that a break for 10 minutes (recently lowered to allow us in later, and out earlier), then another 2 blocks of 50 minutes. Then lunch break from 12:05 to 13:05 (5th and 6th year can leave the school and eat around town then, if your parents agreed, and/or if you’re 18 years old). Finally 2 more blocks, another 10 min break, one last block and then you get to leave school at 15:45. Not too bad compared to your gruelling schedule in the USA I see.

2:47 Ya, im a game developer and I use trig... a lot like a good example is when I had to randomly generate logs for people to duck under in vr. You would be on a generated track system and I had to calculate at what distance away from the log would result in only the players head being caught if they didn't duck at a randomly generated angle. So you got the hypotenuse the distance from the ground extending up the log, your opposite angle. the players height in vr as well as the given angle and you had to figure out the adjacent so that you were ducking the same amount each time. So ya... I honestly think knowing at least basic trig is essential.
