Self-watering pots have a few pros and cons that are worth understanding. Subscribe 🔔 ab.co/GA-subscribe
The roots draw up water from a reservoir below the pot as the roots grow down towards it. It means you don’t have to water so often, so it’s a great solution if you’re planning to be away for a while. The drawback is that it’s harder to monitor the moisture in the soil.
If the soil is dry but there is still water in the pot, it’s likely the plant is too small for the pot and the roots are failing to reach down far enough. You can remedy this by watering from the top and tip out the excess that drains through. If the soil is staying wet, you’ll need to restrict the amount of water in the reservoir.
Perfect plants for self-watering pots include ferns, or plants that prefer water away from their leaves like African violets. Make sure to give them a good soak every now and then, to flush out any excess fertiliser and mineral build up. Avoid using plants that prefer to dry out between watering, such as succulents, anthuriums and dracaenas. In general, self-watering pots need fertilising more often as constant water breaks down water soluble nutrients quickly.

If you're wick watering African violets, or anything really, the soil mix should be at least 50% perlite to keep from drowning the roots. As for fertilizing, what about diluting the fertilizer more? My wicked mini Av's love 1/8 tsp. per gallon in their reservoir water. Also, if the soil is dry but there's water in the reservoir, the wick may just need a re-start; pour water through the pot until it drains out the bottom and make sure it saturates the wick. Acrylic yarn makes a great wick; it's cheap, doesn't rot, and comes in a rainbow of colors.

I'd love a pot that let you 'close' the holes in the bottom , give a good soak and let it get the nutrients from liquid fertilizer, then let it drain out. the normal black pots just let it drain straight out, and self watering are just too wet all the time

Question, I have african violets in a self watering pot but it is making it 2 wet and is making white fungal on the soil. So I am letting them dry out then adding a small amount of water. But it shouldn't stay most all the time right?

It sounds like your soil mix has spores in it; try a different brand. For wick watering your mix should contain at least 50% perlite so the roots can have some air. And yes, it should stay moist all the time. The perlite makes it okay. HTH.

Use your usual mix and add at least 50% perlite; this will keep air in the pot so the roots don't drown. You can also use pebbles or leca; that's called semi-hydroponic, and there should be plenty of how-to vids on YT. Be aware; transparent pots will encourage algae to form; it can be controlled, but it's funky looking and just something else to deal with. HTH.
