A detail about Polka Dot Man I noticed and can relate because it happens to me all the time to is that most of the time he sits/stands quietly in the back while everyone else is talking and when he does talk its often in a rather quiet low energy tone. The only times he talks at a higher more assertive volume is when he's angry that everyone forgot about Milton and when he's happy about using his powers for something good.

(Not so) fun fact: David Dastmalchian, who plays Polka Dot Man, has vitiligo IRL and was apparently bullied as a child and nicknamed "polka dots" because of it; he's also suffered from substance addiction and survived an attempted suicide. James Gunn supposedly did not know any of this when he cast him in the role, but he allegedly envisioned Dastmalchian specifically in the role, particularly when, in response to Bloodsport saying they were all going to die, he responds by saying the line "I hope so". So whilst there's moments when the treatment of PDM feels a tad mean-spirited, he brings a true humanity to a role that could easily have been a joke.

The only thing I don’t like about polka dot man was how quickly he died. I wish we could’ve seen him develop his confidence in future movies and really show that even the ‘weirdest’ of ‘the weird’ deserve to feel confident and happy in their own skin and have a place in this world.

I loved Polka Dot Man at his first line. “We’re all going to die.” “I hope so.” After seeing his lackluster entrance, his defeated, fatalistic comment made him ultimately relatable. Especially for those of us who deal with depression and suicidal thoughts of our own. He had the most character development throughout the movie. And his personal growth made his end all the more heartbreaking.

As someone who has had... let's say "issues" with family throughout my life, I empathized a lot with Abner. Tons of credit to actor David Dastmalchian for putting so much heart into his performance of what others could have considered a lame joke character. I have a personal theory that Abner cared so much for Milton falls back with his siblings. It’s insinuated that Abner killed his mom, possibly to save his siblings. When we find out that he sees everyone as his mom, my mind went back to when we first meet him with the guards and Calendar Man were ripping into him… he saw his mom saying those things. That hit close to home for me (my mom called me stupid throughout my childhood and youth). Even after all these years I sometimes hear it echo in my mind. The sheer joy in his face at being a hero for once in his life… reminding me of the character Amanda Waller. She wanted expendable villains, but Amanda almost looses it when all four decide to do something heroic before getting knocked out. Ratcatcher 2: the stand out for me in this movie. She is the heart. She chose to reach out and extend friendship and trust to Nanaue and Bloodsport, then eventually to the remaining squad members. She also saw good in people even after Peacemaker was about to kill her.
@richbarrett6380
@richbarrett6380 2 жыл бұрын
A more revealing quip at his expense was made by Peacemaker when he refers to him as “Norman Bates”. Both Bates and his inspiration Ed Gein had issues with their mums and Polkadot Man seems like a modern day version of this trope, which goes back even further with the Oedipus story.

The thing about Polka Dot Man seeing his mom in everyone is kinda interesting because trauma induced psychosis is a real thing and can lead to some pretty intense audio-visual hallucinations, although probably not to that degree. Rocket's baggage is even worse because he buried it under so many layers of destructive coping, that it's almost impossible to help him. Of all the people out there, I think Yondu was the ONLY one that could have ever cracked through that, not only because his trauma mirrors Rocket's but because he'd be the only one boneheaded enough to show Rocket that mirror and force him to stare into it and face his trauma.

As soon as I first saw the character in the roll call last August I knew he was gonna be my favourite character but the movie itself made me even more of a fan, I share a lot of similarities with his personality that being that I hold a deep resentment of my mom and I’ve dealt with self loathing and hating myself for years, luckily I met my wife back in 2016 and she helped me to become a far better person than I used to be, David Dastmalchian (Polka Dot Man’s actor) has said that he also dealt with the same thing and attempted to end his life over it, I nearly did the same thing in 2017 as I couldn’t kick my alcohol and drug addictions, thankfully I got the help I needed and I implore anyone reading this to do the same thing, please don’t suffer in silence and find the help YOU need and YOU deserve

Prison was probably the best thing that could have happened to Polka Dot Man (I wonder what he did to end up there in the first place). He had to wear a collar that suppressed his powers, so he didn't have to worry about his rash or vomiting polka dots two times a day. His fellow inmates and guards most likely doesn't really know how powerful he really is, considering the jokes they are making about him. But he appears to be the strongest one in the team. When he decides to not holding back his powers, nobody survives an encounter with him. I doubt even King Shark would have survived a full attack from Polka Dot Man. He also says he has several siblings, both brothers and sisters if I remember correctly, but can't say for sure. Some of them are dead and some of them are not. I suspect none of them are his biological siblings, and his mother is not his biological mother. She is more like a female Dr. Mengele. Did she look like someone who produced babies on a conveyor belt? She must have had colleagues, neighbors, family and relatives, possibly even friends. Wouldn't anyone of these find it suspicious if some of her children died and others developed strange conditions? It is more likely she worked for the government or an organization that provided her with children nobody would miss, and which she could experiment on in her lab. Even if she must have told them to call her "mother", she probably only saw them as test subjects. When she went home from work for the day, her "children" would have been looked up in their rooms /cells till she returned the next day. They would have referred to each other as brothers and sisters, and feared the moment when they once again were chosen by their "mother" to take part in yet another experiment. Whatever tortures he went through, it left him extremely traumatized.

There was this really great scene that was cut that had a whole dialogue bit between Abner(Polka-dot Man) and the Thinker, with the Thinker trying to get under his skin and manipulate him. The whole conversation is less of a back and forth and more of a monologue from the Thinker as Abner quietly tries to refute him (the first time he's shown to stand up for himself) The scene settles on one line from the Thinker *"All it would take is one blessed act of rebellion to restore your dignity"* (in the context that Thinker is trying to get Abner to hand him his gun) Abner then shoots Thinker in the ear, and repeats Thinker's line to Cleo(Ratcatcher) *"He was right! All it takes is one blessed act of rebellion to restore my dignity! I shot him in the ear! [laughs]"* and from this point onward, Abner is more upbeat, he participates more in the group, he's found his place. He finally stopped letting people walk all over him and tell him he deserves it

I hosted a podcast episode on this movie recently and I talk about some of the moments and story arch’s that made me feel emotional and that I related to. Polka Dot Mans story being one of them as an outcast and victim of parental abuse. And in that podcast, we were short on time (we had 5 people on the podcast, we aim to finish under or maybe 5 minutes over an hour to make our editors week easier and I had to hard out not too long after we finished recording) so I feel like I butchered my statement as to why I loved his story in the movie because of the time restraint. I’m so happy you decided to keep covering this movie because 1.) this instance took the words right out of my brain and described perfectly why I loved this movie and 2.) Your perspective adds even more to the movie when I rewatch it, making me love it even more. I’m not sure where else you could go with this movie (the character roster is shortening pretty quick) but I hope there’s at least one more video you can make from this movie and that you cover more of James Gunns movies in the future. His movies before this are ones I crave to hear your perspective on. Thanks for the wonderful video. So happy I stumbled upon this channel recently.

DC Comics has a history of making into a joke character yet in the film he is an incredibly serious character whose has funny moments. I wish they kept him along because he is a realistic and developed character. He has the power to defeat everyone but he is mentally beaten down. With Superman, they restrict his abilities to give others a fair fight but with Abner Krill, they simply give him realistic problems such as depression and PTSD. It is a shame that he died (unless they choose to bring back) because Polka-Dot Man has finally got the respect that he deserves.

According to the actor, Polka Dot Man didn’t really care that much about Milton, but was making the situation more about himself, since he was saying he had a crush on him. Basically “the person I liked is gone, please feel sad for me.”

Awesome video and great insight! I really liked Abner and his empathy is definitely one of his strengths. I'm not sure if I have a favorite scene with him in it, but I definitely felt for him and was moved by his story. I second others - I hope you make a video about Ratcatcher 2! :)

Abner resonated with me. When I was young I went through some abuse and became the quiet kid who didn't wanna be around people. I was easily targeted because of that fact. There were eight bullies in my neighborhood who spent day after day hunting me down, vandalizing my house, even going as far as to try and threaten my own parents. I never told my parents about the sexual assault I went through. But eventually I began to feel like everyone could see my pain and that nobody really cared, anyone I'd get close too would just hurt the paranoid schizophrenic kid who didn't like to talk. Luckily I found my own Squad of fellow outcasts and they helped me find my voice. Many of them talked me into just going to therapy and stuff. But I always felt like all the cuts and bruises I suffered every day and the fact anyone I went to for help just told me to suck it up and get over it. Made me feel like I was unwanted.

I got to admit, they did actually do their home work in this movie. Sometimes they just make movies where not enough love goes into it and it just end up sucking. They sometimes profit before pleasure.

Even if it wasn't his real mother, he did also get to say that he was a super hero to her. It may have been an exclamation that affirmed himself and his choices and path in life but it also feels like he did it and it occurred because of him and not her. I wonder if afterwards he would have started to see people as they are, rather than his mom.

Love the character prior to the film. Because of the silliness. Like kiteman. A great writer can always change that. I suggest looking up kiteman and his current story run. Pokadot man literally from point a to c grew where most movies can give their characters any growth he grew the most. Fashioning a pokdadot man 👨 costume for Halloween because of it.

@@johnnylizama2853 well, the Lazarus pit has been used by several characters without affecting their minds, so I'm preeeetty sure that Mr. Todd is just really ass-mad. Which is not surprising, considering what happened zo him.
