James Gunn did a great job of reinventing the Polka Dot Man. And he fits right in, because Gunn really embraces the absurd side of DC comics in this movie. The main villain is not one I would have thought I'd ever see on a movie screen, but here we are and it's great.

Ok 3 possible theories A. He gets his dots from Acme [⚫/🌑] _ala. Loony Toons. B. He smuggled Wakandan beads, all the way from the Marvel Universe, (they just behave differently in the DCU) then he tweaked, and flattened them, into killer fashion accessories. C. They are actually multiple, separate, pocket dimensions* with different devices/tools/weopons stored inside each one. _ala. Ultra Violet. *Not numerous, mini gateways to _A_ single polka-dot/"dalmatian" dimension, like Marvel's The Spot. Any other ideas?

As silly as this character seems, he might have been a really interesting foe for Batman. Think of his Polka-Dots as something like Batman's utility belt. This allows for the character to always be prepared for every eventuality regarding his plan (whatever that may be). The secret of how the polka-dots work may be the best way to ret-con the character. It doesn't have to be the person who was the original Mr. Polka-Dot. Some washed up hacker could find the suit or plans for the dots and become the latest cyber criminal of the DCU. A lot of potential with this one...

Marveryn that just makes me think of that one panel where Superman with the most disappointed look possible looks and says, “You invented a jet pack in your garage and your first thought was to commit crimes...” “When you put it like that...” Comics sure love their villains that could make more money legally than actually stealing 😂

Here from the future to say that the movie version of PDM in TSS is a tragicomic character of the 1st degree. His dots are brutal weapons but cause him so much strife. No spoilers but the way he sees the world is sad and hilarious all at the same time. I enjoyed watching your vid about his origin. I think TSS improved the character quite a bit and I had a great time watching him in the movie.

You know a comic is going to be good when it opens being philosophical about dots . . . Also Mr Polka Dot Man, like many other silver age villains, has a very interesting power that could have worked if they specified more his powers limitations, instead of just "dots do stuff"... also his costume could look better by just covering the mouth.

I might be in the minority but I'd like for more of these silver age characters revitalized in modern comics like how Zur-En-Arrh was in Morrison's run
@tygrkhat4087
@tygrkhat4087 3 жыл бұрын
Morrison likes to take obscure characters and throw them in the mix. In his current Green Lantern run, he used a character called Halk Kar, who was introduced in the 50s as "Superman's lost brother," who turned out to be a space traveler with amnesia. When his amnesia was cured, he resumed his travels. The story was slightly reworked for Superboy and the "lost brother" turned out to be Mon-El.
@jayinsult
@jayinsult 3 жыл бұрын
I may be in an even bigger minority, but I love to see an old crazy idea revisited, but I often find Morrison's ways of doing so clunky at best and incoherent at worst. And I was a big fan. I just feel like at some point the guy read his own press and started to believe his own hype.

Several things: 1- Out of all the craziest DC characters never in my life I´d thought he´d be making it into live action much less a movie. 2-We can be sure that, if anything, T-Shirts of his costume will be for sale when the movie comes out. 3-Will they make a joke in the movie about a certain specific spot of the body? Like if he can use it as a weapon like the rest of the dots in his costume? 4-I don´t like that they are going to have Arm-Fall-Off-Boy in the movie because the character was created to be made fun of and not to be an actual character in the comics. 5-Please read Grant Morrison´s The Green Lantern as is it a modern take on the Silver Age of the character. 6-At some point do a video on Creeper and Orca. Does anyone think it is possible we´ll see her in live action? Maybe because King Shark will now go to the movies she could take her place in The Flash TV show.

How he did this, and how he met his downfall, you’ll soon know as you follow the career of The Bizarre Polka-Dot Man” It’s nice of them to tell us that he only “ALMOST” defeats Batman and Robin; and that he also meets “His Downfall”, before the story has even started... ...I do so hate surprises haha.

The first story sounded cool interesting but then they stopped using him until a little bit. They then took his powers, kept the suit and gave him a bat which he beat up Gordon with. He is back in the Prime Earth/Rebirth but I'm not sure if they are using him properly. He only needs a decent writer who can him properly. Imagine being able to write for his character in a mini series or something. People want to do Batman or whatever but characters like Polka-Dot Man deserve the time and effort.

Characters like Polka Dot Man are really fun for me to try and tinker with in my head and figure out how you could make the character work. The idea I had was to go a little Lovecraftian and make the dots something otherworldly and maybe even make Polka Dot Man himself be something you can only loosely interpret as a bunch of dots. Or maybe you could do something maybe with the character having synthesia that manifests as dots to explain the obsession with dots? It'd also be fun to see the character as a kind of meta villain that is aware of comics being half-tone printed and messing with the comic itself. That's a meta direction I've never seen done before.

I suppose Maybe what he really needs is a writer who would actually take him seriously. Or maybe it might be time to past the torch. Bring in a guy who finds the suit left behind and enhances its tech. You do this very well Sasha! Your husband's a Lucky man!

you know... actually this character would be fun to reboot/reinvent! If you replace the dots with spherical drones that attack you like the one in the horror movie 'Phantasm' it would be really fun! You can keep him an odd dresser who just likes polka dot prints too (i personal would just use black and white prints with a punch of color here and there). As goofy as it is it's a very distinct look!

Hi Sasha, first time/long time here. Thanks for making my favorite comic vids, you always make me laugh while being informative, well-researched, and insightful! Big fan! When my pal Jon & I saw the DC Fandome announcement for the Suicide Squad lineup, we were struck by what deep cuts certain picks were. We are both DC nerds of some credibility, and some of the new movie Squad were obscure even by our standards. I can't think of a better way to meet some of these more arcane weirdos than through introductory vids on CC! This vid was the perfect intro to the Polka Dot Man. As for the character himself, I'm absolutely gobsmacked his name isn't Ben Day, after the dot printing process used throughout comics history, which in turn was named after its inventor. On the nose? Not for the damn universe that gave us Roy G Bivolo and Edward Nigma, I say! Keep up the great work, and thanks for having me on this comic book journey! Until I come up with a sign-off as clumsy as Bronze Age Hal Jordan, Make Mine Casually Comics!

Love your Batman voice, it's gravely, yet whimsical... and your Robin sounds like David Lynch when he's acting in twin peaks. Keep up with the great content and greetings from Mexico.
