About Puerto Rico....I have nary a drop of Hispanic/Latino heritage (my wife is from Colombia, so my son's are Hispanic/Latino). Half my ancestry is Polish. Gabriel would have a LOT of fun with Polish people! The missus and I visited PR in 2004. Beautiful place. Puerto Rico means something special to any old Pittsburgh Pirate fan who saw Roberto Clemente play baseball..I saw him at Forbes Field in 1968. El Viejo San Juan, Culebra and El Yunque were awesome. We toured the Bacardi factory and saw the Arecibo telescope. You could even get Argentine churrasco at the Mall of Americas food court. The bad thing...Puerto Ricans are terrible drivers. Fly your flag! This Americanski has no problem with it.

I had a Puerto Rican boss at one time. My squadron went to the Philippines for an exercise with our jets. In the P.I. you can get very elaborate tattoos for a very cheap price. Our boss went downtown and got himself what he thought was a Puerto Rican flag on his shoulder. That afternoon at work he was proudly showing it off when someone mentioned it was a Cuban flag, not a Puerto Rican flag. Needless to say, he was right back at the tattoo artist's shop the next morning to get it fixed, but he took a lot of good natured ribbing over the next couple months for not recognizing that mistake.

The reason why Puertoricans love their flag is because once the U.S invaded P.R in 1898, they took away Puertorican flag from Puertoricans, making it a crime flying the Puertorican flag making a “ gag law” and imprisonment for up to 10 years by the insular police by U.S. , sad that many people don’t know the history behind. P.R was given the opportunity to get their flag back in 1952.

We are very proud of our flag and that is a result from a period of time where it was illegal to fly the flag in Puerto Rico. The PR government actually banned it because of a power struggle (if I remember correctly) and it lasted over a decade.
