The Punisher (2004): Is Thomas Jane's Frank Castle Underrated?

The Punisher has always been a property Marvel has struggled with bringing to the big screen. The Netflix show with Jon Bernthal was the closest they ever came to fitting the character into the MCU. Still, it remains a character that many deem too violent for a superhero film, and Frank Castle seems unlikely to appear in a Disney-produced Marvel movie soon. Thus, when other Punisher movies have been made, they’re typically vigilante action movies that aren’t especially tied to their comic book origins. In 1989, we got a low-budget version starring Dolph Lundgren, but in 2004 Lionsgate tried to mount a big-budget, star-studded action movie update, with Thomas Jane playing Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.
The studio went all out, even bringing in John Travolta to play the baddie, but despite Jane’s best efforts (with most agreeing he made a great Punisher), the film was a box office disappointment. Many criticized the camp aspects of the movie, such as the tacked-on comic relief characters or the ultra-melodramatic score (complimented by a very 2004 soundtrack album that included Nickelback, Drowning Pool and Puddle of Mudd). The film also lacked the budget to really deliver as far as action went. Most of the fireworks are saved for the climax, while Travolta hams it up in a way that adds to the movie’s camp value, which would become even more of a factor in the divisive sequel, Punisher: War Zone. In this episode of Marvel Revisited, written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes, we dig into this Punisher one-off and explain why Jane never officially reprised the character, despite being approached for a sequel a few years later.
Does The Punisher (2004) hold up as a decent enough action movie? Is there a way to make The Punisher work in the MCU? Let us know in the comments!

There’s an interview with Jane where he says his Punisher was probably just a year ahead of its time because of how dark it was. The next year brought Batman Begins and started the trend with the darker superhero films.

The way he slowly manipulates Howard into killing his wife and best friend is genius. Not to mention ruining his business. He takes everything from the man that took everything from him. Then after revealing that he was the one behind it all, kills him. Great revenge flick.

Not mentioning that Thomas Jane *actually* stabbed Kevin Nash (accidentally) in their fight is worthy of a little punishment in and of itself. Seriously, Jane *actually* stabbed Nash when the real knife wasn’t switched out with a prop. It’s the scene that was left in, too. Nash just looked down at the knife and continued the scene. Jane sent him a couple of cases of beer as an apology

I will die on this hill saying that this is the best representation of The Punisher to date--even the Netflix series couldn't hold a candle to this, IMO. The mood, the action and the portrayal by Jane, (who like the comic character only says very little after his loss) really gave their best regardless of their budget and time limitation. Also, a lot of this was taken right out of the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic, so cheers for trying to represent the source!

I’ll die on this hill with you man. Although I like the Netflix show it’s really became less of an adaptation and more of a Jon Bernthal show. That second season fell off a cliff. This movie just shows exactly how The Punisher should be handled. Down to his quiet and brooding nature. I will admit one problem with the movie though. Travolta phoned in his performance. He just wasn’t doing it for me. The second movie did the total opposite and had the hammiest over the top villain that felt straight from a comic. They just needed to find a happy medium.

Let's NEVER forget that Thomas Jane VOICED Frank Castle in the 2005 game, which is ALSO a underrated game, and even mentions some of his neighbors, as if it is a kind of a sequel of the movie. Frank in the game fight against a major conspiration that brings him from one place to another. The game is LONG and features a full arsenal of weapons. From a crackhouse/chop shop, to the Gnucci italian mafia (he even invades a funeral), to the Russians (AND a fight against "the Russian"), to freaking Kingpin, and then against the Yakuza. All culminates to the fight against the Villain Jigsaw. The game even features Bushwacker, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Iron Man, Bullseye, Kingpin...

I came across this movie about a year ago, I wasn't that familiar with the character, but I was aware of the Netflix series. I watched it when it was on tv, and I ended up loving it. I think that this movie is definitely in the top list of under appreciated marvel movies. Thomas Jane's portrayal as the Punisher was absolutely fantastic, and I wish we could have gotten the sequel that would have had John Saint return as Jigsaw and we also would have been introduced to Micro as well. Another thing that I think makes this movie awesome is that they decided to take inspiration from punisher year one, and the comic book master piece, Punisher 'welcome back Frank' written by Garth Ennis. This movie deserves more love and attention, and I would love it if Thomas Jane wouldn't mind reprising his role as the punisher for the whole marvel cinematic multiverse craze that is happening right now.

And the Mist fits in there somewhere. Jane low key ruled the 2000s. He had a big gun, a big member, and survived a Stephen King movie.

I remember showing this movie to my friend and he commented that it came off like a late night tv movie. That it takes place in Florida, and the canon event involves a family reunion ruins this movie. Maligned as it was, Punisher War Zone is the most accurate with its setting and the way Castle is portrayed.

I used to think that he needed a second movie, specially after that Dirty Laundry short. However, Jon Bernthal is the definitive Frank Castle, not only is he a broken man who lost his family but he's ultra-violent and never quits, Thomas Jane looked tired in a lot of his action scenes, while Bernthal just unleashes that soldier PTSD violence, which in my opinion it is what The Punisher should be.

I can't recall if I saw this in the theaters or VHS rental back then, but I do know I was disappointed in Dolf Lungrin's version for it not having the Punisher skull shirt, and seeing pics of that emblem finally being used must have definitely been a major reason I gave this a chance. And even though he didn't fully feel like the comic book come to life (the actor not matching my ideal envisioning and no iconic 70s/early 80s costume) I remember really enjoying it and so much so that even without the comic book elements I'd still watch it again. It ranks up there with Charles Bronson movies for this genre. I seem to recall naively thinking everyone else would like it as much as me and, even more naively, that he actually had a shot (no pun intended) at being in a Spider-Man movie. The small unofficial Punisher short was a wonderful surprise that almost made up for it. And now that Toby has returned once as Spider-Man, I'd love to finally see this Punisher show up in (hopefuly) another Toby appearance.

Garth Ennis max comics runs was more in line with Dolph's Punisher. The punisher went after any criminal and killed them without remorse and second thought to what the consequences of him killing those criminals. For example Ennis Punisher wiped out the top mob leaders and they resorted to bringing a complete pyscho path to lead them. Dolph's Punisher weakened the mob so much that the Yakuza came in and took over.

@@jmaritg3830 Thanks for this. I've always said that Dolph Lundgren is the best Punisher on the big screen to date. (Have yet to see Bernthal's TV version.) I hear nothing but good things about Garth Ennis' run with Frank. Except if he's the one who depicted Castle as someone at home killing and faking it (normalcy) with his family. There's a run of Punisher that shows him at home killing in War and him at home bottling the real Frank up, even hints at abuse. That's not my Punisher. He's a man good at killing, but it's not his joy. His family was his happy place.

It took some years to finally been able to see it uncut again - back when it was running in the cinema, it was uncut by the way ;) I always felt, Thomas Jane would deserve a second movie and was pleasantly surprised by dirty laundry. You forgot to mention that during the fight scene between Frank and The Russian (Kevin Nash), the balisong/butterfly knife that Jane stabs Nash with was in fact real since the prop team forgot to replace the blunted prop knife with a SFX equivalent with a "disappearing" blade. Nash played it off like it was nothing and took it all in stride, simply requesting some super glue to close the wound. This was also the shot that made it into the final cut of the film, so Nash never broke character even when he was stabbed with a four inch blunted blade. Pretty friggin' wild...

Under appreciated gem. And what do you mean "Yikes" with showed Punisher War Zone? That film's under rated AF too. They nailed the gritty feel of that setting and the overall gruesome savagery. Ray Stevenson did a great job with it, he's bloody bad ass, and there's many iconic kills in that film, including the abrupt shotgun to the thug's head in the house where said thug was going to rape and murder a woman and child... oh, and the the randomness of the guy on the toilet in the hotel 😅🤭 But I think if Thomas Jane's The Punisher was set in dark and shadier New York, it would have been a masterpiece 😉
