I'm sure it is mortifying to Mark to make a mistake, but I'm getting to the point where watching Mark and Simon unwind their mistakes, and go on to solve the puzzle is one of my favorite parts. Their ability to maintain concentration, and spot the error without starting over from the beginning is really a lesson in sticktoitiveness!

I actually thought, at first, that I would give this puzzle a try. It is a bit beyond the length of video that I think I can do the puzzle, but I like the layout of the grid ... I'm glad I didn't try it before watching your video, though, because it is quite hard, I think, to get beyond the initial geometry of figuring out where the digits you colored blue go. Several people have pointed out your mistake at around the 26 minute mark, and I have to say that I wish that commenters would go back and either delete their comment complaining about a mistake, or edit it to acknowledge that you rewound to fix the error. I believe that watching you discover a mistake and watching how you think through the fix for it is one of the interesting and instructive things about a video like this. I also think that complaining because your solve is not perfect is a pointless complaint - actually, it is more that it misses the point of Cracking the Cryptic as a whole (not just your videos) because you and Simon solve puzzles that you have not seen before, have not plotted a 'best path' through, and you show us what you do and think, unedited. There are other channels where walkthroughs or other pre-thought-out solves are presented where a solver can be sure to get a clean path. Personally, I like watching you (and Simon) struggle with a puzzle in just the exact way that I do (except smarter), because it is more real-life and more fun for me as a viewer. And there is always something to learn, no matter whether the solve is smooth as silk or has some bumps along the road. Thank you for all that you do to bring us such fun and enjoyable and interesting videos. Tonight's interesting vocabulary included 'spuriously,' 'obfuscate,' and the fun expression, 'O my giddy aunt!'

There are probably several who watch enough of the video to find a hint at what they are missing in an attempt to solve the puzzle themselves. When they find a misleading claim of logic which they cannot understand they may feel it right to question in order to get a better grip on how the "logic" was reasoned, perhaps not looking for a later bit in the video because they stopped at this logic stumbling block. It is not up to these people to later come back with a different logic or to point to a section of the video they did not get to because they stopped watching at the point where they lost the logic.
@emilywilliams3237
@emilywilliams3237 6 ай бұрын
Maybe, if they don't watch the whole video, but just stop in frustration when they detect an error, they should not leave a comment at all. I think that I, as a reader of comments, would prefer that. What benefit is there to the commenter if they don't watch the rest of the video? They never learn whether they are justified in their complaint or whether they learn the better logic by watching farther into the video - and meanwhile, a comment that actually does not pertain to the video as a whole, but only to one part of it, gets left here. My feeling is that not leaving a complaining comment unless they also acknowledge that their complaint was answered is best.@@RoderickEtheria

@QuarkTwain 6 ай бұрын
@@liammcg8904 Solvers can be reluctant to put in test digits out of fear of bifurcation, but I suggest they should get over that! It's a useful technique to explore a possible path. The key is that once you discover something with test digits, make sure you understand the logic of what happened. Then unwind the test digits and proceed normally, applying what you learned.

When you deduced at the start that r9c2 is at least a 4 (because r8c6 is), you could have made the equally valid deduction that r8c6 is at most a 6 (because r9c2 is)! This would have immediately proven based on the remaining candidates that r7c4 does not repeat in r9c789, leaving r9c3 as the only remaining cell for it to appear in row 9.

@26:00 I don't see why R3C4 cannot be a 3. You could place 2/1 in Rows 4/5 Column 5, 3/2 in row 9 columns 8/9, the shared 2 would be in R8C4, and rows 7/8 column 5 would be a 3/4 pair. Why would that not work?

Around 17:00 Mark was checking the positive diagonal and I thought for sure he was going to notice the 8s off the diagonal in boxes 3 and 7. Alas it took him about 15 more minutes to notice and not before having to backtrack an error he probably would have avoided had he caught the 8 the first time. But still a brilliant solve of the breakthrough. Really clever way for the thermos to interact with each other.

Well, that was interesting. When Mark said r3c4 couldn't be a 3, I didn't understand why, and thought his logic might be wrong. So I made it a 3 and proceeded from there as a sort of bifurcation to see who would prove whom wrong. Imagine my surprise when I came out on top!

1:21:45 - OMG - funnily enough I set this up on the Sudoku Maker app when I didn’t really know where to start. It found virtually no logical moves, so I decide def to apply myself and tried imagining what Mark might do. I am well chuffed to have completed it unaided but I’m now going to watch the video and see if I was following a similar path.

When Mark said that r3c4 on the thermo had to be 4, I was shouting at the video (having double and triple checked my logic that 3 would have been ok)!! Up to that point I was doing a bit and then going back to the video and watching up to where I'd got to... So I was out on my own from then, till the end. Then I watched the rest of the video to see how/when he would twig. Fair play for winding it back to the correct place. If I've made a mistake that far back, I just have to start again 🤣 Great video, and I enjoyed the rarity of feeling smug😄

Yes, it literally made no sense. Having concluded that one of the digits MUST repeat between the two thermos, to rule out the 3 was nonsense. The 2 and 1 were forced, and the 1 means the other thermo MUST have the repeated 2. Cue quarter of an hour of wasted time!

What a magnificent construction‼ What an outstanding masterpiece‼‼ I have seen some bits of similar logic before, but this is much denser *logic juice* 😋😋😋. Challenging from start to end, thematically consistent and amazingly minimalistic. Just nothing but *magic* interactions between a few relatively short thermos.
@Paolo_De_Leva
@Paolo_De_Leva 6 ай бұрын
It would be interesting to see how much time it would take to *Simon* to find the opening logic, given his reluctance to pencilmark thermos 🤪 (which sometimes produces "cleaner" solves) I suspect that, in this case, heavy pencilmarking is the most effective method to grasp the iterative logic in the *bottom row,* but I am curious to see if there is an alternative Simonesque path in this case.
@Paolo_De_Leva
@Paolo_De_Leva 6 ай бұрын
I am watching Mark's video now and I see he did not use *iterative logic* at the beginning, as I did. He used a much more elegant and Simonesque method. 👏👏👏 Then unfortunately, @25:28, I believe he used invalid logic to rule out *3* from *r3c4.*

Your thinking at the start was interesting, but there was an easier way to attack this. After Goodliffing, you need to place both 8 and 9 on R9. At least one must be in box 8, so R8C6 cannot be 8. This means you now also need to place 7 in the empty cells in R9, two of which must be in box 8, so R8C6 now cannot be 7. You now have the situation where R7C4 cannot be in R9 in boxes 8 or 9, so it must go in R9C3. This makes your purple digits appear on the start of the left hand thermo. The highest they can be is 5 and 6 and the lowest is 4 & 5. You now have three high (>5) digits in C3, so R2C3 is at most 5, putting 12 and 23 on the thermo in box 5. The three cells in R9 in box 9 must appear in R7C5, R8C4 and R8C5. This gives a 1234 quad in C5. The 4 in the quad means purple cannot include 4, and therefore must be 56, and most of the thermos unwind. @ 24:20 - You're stuck. Try the diagonals. Where does 8 go on the positive diagonal? There's only one place it can go, in R4C6. This unwinds your 789 triple in C5. Now 7 must go on the diagonal in box 3. @ 25:55 - Your logic was flawed here. You claimed that if the cells in box 5 are 12, there can be no shared digit with blue. However, it puts a 2 in the corner, which is obviously shared. Quite often, a mistake like that has minimal effect until later, but this resulted in hoards of wrong digits all over the place. I'm amazed you were able to get as far as you did without hitting a problem. Had you placed the 8 on the diagonal earlier, you'd have discovered your mistake earlier. Well done for spotting where your problem was. That's always something I struggle with. This was very elegant, and quite minimalistic setting, making great use of both rulesets.

0:45 the girl in the drawing reminds me of the China girl in "Oz the Great and Powerful". 25:00 I don't agree with the argument ruling out 3 from R3C4. Block 5's thermo segment would be 12, and block 9's thermo segment would be 23. 2 would be the shared digit and go in R8C4, while 34 goes in C5's blues. (1 goes in R9C6 because I've already placed 7 in R9C4.) 27:30 Trouble is a-brewing because I have 43 cornermarked on the downward diagonal in R6C6. I have 8 on the upward diagonal in R4C6. (One can see from the video's grid that it's the only possible place for an 8 on that diagonal.) 28:00 I am currently stuck, so I'll see how the video goes. 33:00 Watching with measured interest. Mark sees that he's broken the puzzle. I think it's when he ruled out the possibility of 3. 44:50 A chocolate teapot triple melts as soon as you do anything with it.
