serendipidus1 I might be wrong but doesn't it only happen on a recording so I've always thought it was just that the still images that make up the video footage are out of sync with the wheels so it appears to turn backwards. Hope that makes some sense and I hope even more that it's true

Einstein works not because you expect a face, but because it is translucent and it is lighted from the rear/side instead of the front/side. This makes the shadows correct for a front lighted face and shadows are used by our eye-brain to judge 3-D feature relief direction.

(7:19) Actually, robots can be fooled by optical illusions, just not the same ones that fool us. Computer vision systems have been tricked in a few different ways, from subtly altering a few pixels in just the right way to throw a classification algorithm off completely, to overlaying skin textures that fool it into thinking everything is an elephant or crocodile. Moiré patterns look colourful to cameras.

@@MichaelEdelman1954 You said he was correct and yet he was wrong and you knew yourself to be correct 0_O it has everything to do with the image being a face as you can make a mold of anything else in the world and your mind will not reverse the image. It is as you say, because the mind wants to see a convex face and so it makes a convex face. And to YY4Me133, you can't manipulate the shadows on a three dimensional object, they will fall where they fall depending on external light sources...

Ha, I was about to make the exact same comment. I strongly suspect that illusion would be nearly as effective regardless of what was being represented. That said, the fact it's a face does probably help to make the brain a little more easily fooled.

The brain is amazing in the ways it can be fooled, but also in the ways it can learn. I just spent 10 minutes watching that Einstein mask, and I can now make my brain see it the way it actually is. Hooray for brains!

The Einstein / Monroe picture illusion works for me but the one of Alan / Stephen doesn't. I only see Stephen all the way through and eventually a single stand of Alan's hair.

I love this show and miss this type of TV. Would never work in the US. The audience doesn't want to know anything they don't already know. It scares them. Jeopardy only works because they think of it as something unattainable... sad that it's knowledge and Information.

In regard to the first trick, I wonder if there are any people (sighted ones, obviously) for whom this doesn't happen. People with prosopagnosia (face blindness), possibly.
