Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was the last Empress of India.

She was thee most beloved royal to the day she died, referred as the kingdom's mother. but i have to disagree with the so-called head of the family, she was head of the establishment, but the documentaries involving the queen around the Queen Mother, she would always refer to her affectionately as mummy. She just couldn't ask her for advice, she was only a consort, and i find it quite funny that she was played by Helena Bonham Carter in the 'King's speech' and now she's playing as her daughter, Princess Margaret, in 'The Crown'

The Queen Mother lamented feeling that when she should have been given more to do following her husband (the King)’s death, to fill that void in her life, that instead they took everything away and gave it to her inexperienced daughter. Yet when Margaret, her own daughter, lamented the same thing, wanting more to do, more responsibilities to make her life and contributions feel worthwhile, the Queen Mother objected and ensured Margaret not be given things to do. She’s projecting her suffering into her own child, like many parents tend to do.

I love the episode where The Queen Mother wants to buy the Castle in Scotland when the seller did not recognize her. He thinks that she is an actress, not until a guy from the palace called her "Majesty" and said she needs to go back to England. Honestly I really like Victoria Hamilton's portrayal of the Queen mother more so than Marion Bailey. Don't get me wrong, Marion Bailey is a wonderful actress but there are points in seasons 3 and 4 where she just came off at best cold-hearted and at worst a villain, whereas with Hamilton's she seems very kind and caring mother and a woman looking for purpose after being widowed. I understand that with the change of actresses and the change of times also comes change of characterization but I think they strayed a little too far with the second two seasons. Again I'm not criticizing Marion Bailey's performance, I just personally prefer Victoria Hamilton's.

I agree, the way they wrote Victoria Hamilton's QM was far more sympathetic in the sense that you could see that there was pain behind many of her decisions, actions and behaviours- the writing for Marion Bailey's has her come across as far more sinister I believe, especially how ruthless she was with Camilla and Charles.

She drove me nuts in the series, which I'm sure creative liberties, I hope. Because if she actually treated her daughter, the queen like she did, not being supportive and sniping at her at every bit, she was an awful person. Her daughter had more than enough on her plate without her mother making her feel bad about her own choices.

She's truly made out to be a monster in the series. In the real world opinions of her are very polarized as there are many who loved her but there was a sizable part of the general public who had a very bad opinion of her. Obviously the makers of the Crown fall into the latter camp.
@wickandde
@wickandde 3 жыл бұрын
Well as to that people can make up their own mind if they read several biographies of her. I see her as being an incredibly entitled figure in history and her usefulness in being a stable influence to husband during his reign does not outweigh her negative qualities. She spent a fortune on clothes and frivolities at a time when England could not afford it, e.g. she got about 17,000 more coupons as a normal person during the war, including when the rest of royal family stuck to rationed clothes, simply because she believed as Queen she must always be the best dressed. Then she kicked up a big fuss and absolutely refused to leave the palace until the present Queen reasoned with her (it's not like she wasn't given a massive mansion to live in) she just wanted to exert her power over the Queen as she did with her husband. When she finally did move, she massively overspent her sizable stipend (over 1million in today's money) every year on the most amazing over the top lavish parties, she also bought art but often "forgot" to pay. The present Queen silently repaid all her excess creditors each year to an amount in the millions, (probably with tax payer funding), this matter wasn't known till after her death. She also died bankrupt owing many debts which the present queen silently repaid once again. Many of her financial advisers actually got ill and died early from the sheer stress of trying to manage her excessive spending, a bank also refused to give her an OD at one point. She also left out her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were not direct heirs to the throne. I'm sure she loved them all but she treated the heirs more favorably than their siblings and cousins. Also she actively helped Charles cheat on Diana and was a notorious racist and many more. Don't get me wrong, she was of enormous help to her husband but she was an extremely flawed person, like I said The Crown was very kind.

She didn't push through any new laws, didn't spearhead a campaign (like Diana with landmines) didn't seek to advance peoples opinions (like Diana with Aids), did not encourage a movement (like Charles with green politics) or play an active party in charities (like Ann). The term queen mother was not invented to help distinguish between Elizabeth II and her mother. That term has always been used to refer to a dowager queen who is mother of the present sovereign. During the reign of George VI, Mary of Teck, widow of George V, was queen mother.

The show really painted a conflicting picture. On one hand she was central to King George VI in his reign during Britain's darkest hour. But on the other hand we saw her undermining QE2 a lot in the early days of her reign, colluding with Thommy Lassels to defy her commands rather than carry them out as their duty requires. At times she seemed woefully out of touch with reality to the point of blissful ignorance. She orchestrated a number of plots and schemes behind the Queen's back that lead to the sabotage of both Margaret and Charles' lives. She also had a rather dismissive attitude towards the Queen making decisions and quick to criticize them when even the slightest thing went wrong. It was like she couldn't accept that she no longer had the authority she held and had to meddle constantly.

Elizabeth Bowes Lyon. Mary no longer was the mother of the reigning monarch so she was just a dowager Queen

I feel like the Queen Mother was a newer used title, I really don’t want think Mary or Alexandra of Denmark either used it. They were Dowager queens. I wonder if it was popularized because this was the first time in centuries that there were three living queens so they had to differentiate. Mary was Dowager Queen, the elder Elizabeth was Queen Mother as she was the mother of the Queen, and the younger Elizabeth was obviously queen regnant.

I hear that during the last year of her life queen Mary was called “queen grandmother”. Being a widow queen and the grandmother of the queen

@@piratesswoop725 The title Queen Mother has always been in play. First, with Queen Alexandra, then with Queen Mary whilst her sons held the title King, then Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI until his death. The primary reason it's associated with the last one is because her name is also the name of the reigning queen. Neither Alexandra nor Mary needed to be called "queen mother" because their successors did not have the same names as they did. However, they were referred to as such on occasion. A Queen Dowager would be someone who was queen, but not the mother of the new sovereign, someone like Queen Adelaide who was not Queen Victoria's mother, but her aunt; or, as future events may demand, Queen Camilla when William takes the throne.

Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, casued more problems than she helped in solving any of them. Elizabeth II would have been much better off without her for all those years.

No she was a kind women but her duty as queen trumped her being a good mother many times and she was a fierce traditionalist while Margaret was a more emotional person so there were short fallings on her side from that. Part of her also changed when her husband died so that made her less empathetic

No, to avoid confusion with her mother-in-law, who had the traditional title of Dowager Queen. So she became Queen Mother. 👑

Her mother-in-law was called Queen Mary (never Queen Dowager that I know of). Her daughter was always simply The Queen. But as they had the same given name there had to be some way to distinguish them. So she opted for a title that had the word Queen in it twice.
