Interesting story behind this. The submarine was actually tested by the Navy and was good for depths of 600+ feet. It was the crane operator lowering it into the water that caused the mishap. Jerry Bianco, the builder of the sub, was told by the crane operator that the sub was too heavy for his crane, so Jerry and volunteers removed 8 tons of ballast from one side of the sub. The crane operator was told to lower the sub part way into the water, so the ballast could be replaced to balance the sub back out. The crane operator let the unbalanced submarine down all the way, and it rolled. The sub was eventually righted and proved to be working fine, but investors no longer wanted to back it after the initial embarrassment. It sat moored until a storm in 1975 broke it free, and it sank where it is now.

I've heard of and seen videos about this sub before, but it's definitely Atlas Obscura material and I'm glad to see what's become of it today, even if it's a bit disappointing. Also, it was really good to see Dylan in a video again!

I feel like if this park and waterway were cleaned up, a little museum could be put in for the ship cemetery. I'd visit that!

There’s also construction vehicles buried in the sand under the shore when you walk closer to the wreckage. On the beach across the creek. The Water is very very polluted because of a gas company in the 50s dumping into the water. Also fun morbid fact the architect who designed the park was found dead in the creek. I’ve been hanging out there since I was in high school and even celebrated my 21st in quarantine there. So many more hidden gems there besides the ship graveyard.

I grew up in Coney Island. When my family came to the United states from Panama, that was one of the first places we moved to. Me and my friends used to play in Coney Island Creek. I never knew that submarine was there.

glad you got the background story correct. Most dont. See the yellow top? some person or persons goes out and paints the top. I used to see the ship moored by the Cropsey Ave Bridge for decades before the storm ripped it from its moorings. When Covid is over, stop by the Coney Island History Project in the summer on the weekends, located on West 12 near the Boardwalk for some more nautical history of Coney Island Creek. It ends by Shell road. Some years ago, they dammed this end of the creek, placed a layer of something over the poisons embedded in the soil. then removed the dam.

That place looks like you could have inflated your boat with exhaled crack smoke. Very interesting story. I'm on Northern Lake Huron and there are a ton of ship wrecks but we definitely don't have a submarine.

Could have enter at Calvert Vaux Park (nvm you did do that), and it has a small beach area where you could have launch your kayak from. Those are homeless people behind the home depot/six diamonds park. They mind there own business. I agree it's sketchy there. I believe in 2015 a black woman was murder (could have been murdered early then that) and her body dumped near the park on Bay 44st. Her body was decomposed that the only information the had was a tattoo on her arm or leg. Pretty sad. Also a Spanish man got brutally attacked and stabbed to death last year around this time (summer 2019). There has been a few dead people found there, death unknown at times. As it was being renovated around 2011-2013 people use to have huge raves. Oh the good times Yes. I've seen people walk out there during low tide but not too close to the submarine. Definitely recommend the park, its a hidden gem of Brooklyn where you can see the Verrazano Bridge. Just don't stay there after dark there are no lights in the back and I walk my dog off leash as well as do others Next adventure should be the Forts in Breezy Point or Staten Island etc. or the Pumpkin House in the city (someone just bought it recently and they haven't started any renovations yet due to the DOB not giving out permits during COVID-19 so you may ask if you guys can film inside of it) or Hart Island or Hoffman Island
