The Questions Most Christians Hope Skeptics Won't Ask

I compiled some common questions I've gotten over the years and asked my friend Frank Turek on to do what he does best: answer these questions and tell corny dad jokes while he's at it.

03:49- Believing in God is for dumb people. Evolution answers the question of how we got here. So how do we know that a God even exists?
08:52- I don’t understand how morality proves that a God exists. Even an animal can show ‘kindness’ to another and it doesn’t need to prove that a god exists, so how is this even a good argument?
12:35- Can’t multiple universes explain the fine-tuning argument?
15:33- All religions claim to be true. What makes you think your religion is the true religion and everyone else is wrong and damned to hell? Isn’t that completely judgmental of you to say?
20:29- How could a loving God send people to hell, especially for all eternity? Why not just allow everyone into heaven, or have a temporary punishment for the people that really have done evil?
25:58- How do we know that the Bible is reliable? Do we have any actual evidence for the Old Testament claims like the army being wiped out in the Exodus, and how do we know they recorded the truth and didn’t make it up?
32:11- With the terrible amount of evil in the world, It seems that a good God would do something to intervene. How can God sit and watch and do nothing?
39:44- The Bible doesn’t teach homosexuality is a sin so why do Christians condemn it?
44:07- Why is it that only religious people say abortion is wrong? It seems to me that they only care about the baby when it’s in the womb, and could care less after the baby is born.

I heard Sam Harris give a speech denying "Free Will". At the end of the speech, he made the comment, "We have to endeavor to do better". I thought to myself, "HOW? If we have no "Free Will" then we can't endeavor anything.

Yes! Most everyone who denies free will or moral responsibility almost immediately says something that denies their claimed belief. In philosophy that's called 'reductio ad absurdam', meaning that your argument leads to absurd conclusions, which demonstrates the premises of your arguments must be false.

Interesting and so true. The argument against free will was argued very well by Dr. Turek at a Q&A post lecture. He asked the person if they feel as if they consciously make choices. The person said yes. Dr. Turek said “my feelings as well so, in my opinion, you would need a lot of evidence to make me change my mind.” Shalom.

There's probably more to it than the polar opposites. Consider your favorite thing for a moment. Can you just decide to hate it? You could tell yourself, carry out new behavior, but would you be able to genuinely hate it without any outward factor changing? Also, can you control what thoughts pop in your head? Can you decide not to think?

My response to Sam Harris would be to abolish the justice system, since clearly no one is responsible for their actions, according to an athiest. The notion is absurd, as is the absurdity and insistence that free will does not exist.

@@rinzler9171 I love pointing out to atheist that their carefully crafted experiments that they think proves abiogenesis, only proves the necessity of an intelligent mind. Until they can show it happening in wild conditions, that is all they are doing, proving the necessity of God to interact with pre-biotic materials. And when they say that they will one day, I point out that that is "faith".

@Mel Dummar Yea look up the accounts of Josephus and Tacitus. The Quran also talks about him too; not in the same manner as a Christian, but still gives an account on his life. It's kinda weird you don't consider the gospels good sources because they're in the Bible, despite them being proven to correlate just as any good eyewitness testimony, but 🤷🏾♀️

@Mel Dummar Tl,dr: To answer your question, probably. But based off personal experiences and experiences I've seen happen to other people, it would be foolish of me to say God doesn't exist. Keep reading below to see why I believe this. Whenever I went through spiritual attacks (aka sleep paralysis), calling on Jesus would immediately remove that sensation and I would be able to move normally again. Some people I know have had dreams where they were being judged by a Jesus-like figure for a particular sin; they were warned if they keep dwelling in that sin they would reap the consequences. Well, these people didn't heed that warning, kept dwelling in that sin, and eventually got themselves into physical and spiritual trouble because of that sin. Certain prayers I've prayed were answered in EXTREMELY coincidental ways that solidified my belief that God was hearing my prayers (granted my prayers were not answered the way I wanted them to be answered, but they were still answered in a way that can't be explained by human works/science). Keep in mind all of these things happened not long after I gave my life to Christ; these situations barely scratch of the surface of all of the other things I've seen/experienced!

@Mel Dummar I'm going to continue my explanation here. When I became more familiar with the Bible, I realized these events correlated with multiple biblical scriptures regarding how God works and what He's capable of. I was not extremely familiar with God when these things happened, but there was too much overlap and coincidence between these events and scripture to disregard any correlation between the two. I know this explanation may sound crazy from your perspective, but once you strive to know who God is, little by little things will start making sense. Everyone's testimony on how they came to believe in God is different, but that gut feeling that something beyond physical/natural understanding is happening is similar in everybody.

@Christian Aponte Jesus kept knocking on my door. It wasn't my head but my heart that had to hear him. I decided to learn more about what Jesus said, because even from a secular view everything he said about how to live made sense to me. I would call myself an atheist who loved the Philosophy of Jesus. As am atheist I felt an emptiness...a sort of lack of fulfillment...happiness at times but not consistent joy. I went to church with a friend and felt so fulfilled. It was a powerful feeling of love. I realized how broken and alone I felt. So I went back to the church by myself on a service on a Weds. when not a lot of people were there and I felt it again. The pastor was talking about how JESUS created us and if we are feeling broken Jesus can make us whole again. In my mind, I don't know why but, I said "God please make me whole." I felt like a warm light from above come into me, like powerful but gentle and pure...so warm and I heard a voice in my head say "Daughter you are already whole." I knew it was him. From that moment, I knew He was real. Everyday from that day I felt this joy in my heart, like I was filled in a way I wasn't before. But I had a knowing in the core of my being that God was real and life eternal was real. It took me four years after that... from falling into new age looking for God... to coming out to realize the truth was only in Jesus. Jesus just kept knocking on my door until I realized that voice I heard that day was His voice. Jesus saved me. He saved me from atheism. Then, he saved me from new age. Now, I belong to Jesus 100%. He is my everything! My whole life changed. I don't even recognize the old me. I was so self absorbed and sinful. Now I can't stand the thought of not pleasing Jesus. My kids and my husband know Jesus too. I couldn't keep Him to myself! We belong to a great church and have never been this close as a family. Jesus transformed and is still transforming each of us.

@@aspiringlegend9514 because it's usually a thought you know you wouldn't think and if it involves the fruits of the Spirit, that are lovely and kind thoughts, especially towards others, then it is usually God 😉 Does that help you understand? I was agnostic too...when I started searching, I was looking at NDE's, testimonials and such and saw a lot of people, even of other religions turn to Jesus. So, I bought a bible and started to read it. I came across God's name YHWH and asked, out loud, while I was alone in my room "How do you pronounce that!?" to which a tender, male voice replied "Yahuah" and my whole body tingled! I later found out, through many confirmations, even up to this day, that's the ancient Hebrew way of saying Yahweh. The bible says "seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be answered to you" all you have to do is genuinely seek Him 😊

True we don't see the ripples of an action whether good or bad. I was conceived in rape but given up for adoption. I now have 3 children, 2 daughter's in law, and 3 grand children. So although my birth father was evil and a rapist my life and children's lives are a blessing to others. Good came from evil. Praise God.

Gnashing of teeth... Dr. Turek has an interpretation of Gnashing teeth that I have never encountered. I had always thought people in Hell will be Gnashing teeth out of pain rather than out of anger toward God. Very interesting.

One of my favorite quotes from Frank is actually a question he asks (paraphrasing here): “If you knew Christianity is true, would you follow (worship) Jesus?” Cuts to the chase/heart there…a way of processing and uncovering. 🙏🏼 Thank you, Melissa and Frank!!

If I *knew* it was true, then yeah. Of course, the only way that can probably happen is if Jesus comes back 😅. You can try and show that circumstantial evidence is a thing, though I do find that it’s .. not exactly 100% conclusive on the side of Christianity. I mean, really all we know is that there are some people who claimed to have seen Jesus as eyewitnesses, told of his divinity, and were willing to die for such claims. And I think we can say that with decent confidence since… we have mostly unchanged accounts of the 4 gospels 😅. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything, of course..

@@jhmejia That's one of the saddest things I've heard. You are going to just "wait and see" if it is true and by that point it will be too late for you. Maybe you should pray (yes, I know you don't believe) and ask God that if He is real if He would reveal the truth to you. I mean, really, the only thing you are out is a half a minute here or there when you think about saying a "prayer" and if He isn't real nothing will change.

"Intelligence" in the eyes of the world is simply memorization and repetition, the better at it you are the more "intelligent" you are. No one of the world is wiser than one who fears our God and knows Him personally, therefore KNOWING the answers to all of life's biggest questions. Something even the greatest of philosophers are still groping for in the dark.

Watch 1.5 hour lecture, The Veritas Forum, Paul Maier presents new historical evidence for Jesus. As concise as you could ask for. When Day of Discovery was doing a series about the DaVinci Code one of their experts was Dr. Maier. Well worth the listen, he’s not only a knowledgable historian but entertaining as well, the way a good teacher should be. Shalom

I would recommend Q&A sessions and clips from John MacArthur, Grace to You, R.C. Sproul, and Ligonier Ministries as well as Greg Koukl and Ray Comfort, Living Waters, and Ken Ham, Answers in Genesis. Their answers seem 'more' biblical.

@@bjornegan6421 Actually I think that these brothers and sister, Frank and Michael Heiser and more of this 'camp' deepen the understanding of the existence of God more. The people you mentioned , allthough very good preachers, are calvinists, Frank and Michael believe in free will and the calvinist preachers you mentioned have their expertise on other areas. You will never hear brother MacArthur preach on the divine counsel or evidence on the existence of God and how He made the earth and the heavens. Frank, Michael, Melissa and many more are just as biblical as John, Grace community, Ligonier and such. We are just not calvinist in our beliefs.

@@bjornegan6421 Sadly i know MacArthur to be a legalist and not so much a Grace teacher. We can't have both the free gift of God and works of the law, yet he seems to try and mash them together and had me all sorts of confused and in constant fear and doubt.

@@EQOAnostalgia MacArthur is not in any way a legalist. Perhaps you are confusing what faith is with legalism. Legalism is the idea that you must obey the Law to be saved. No. Absolutely not. Clearly that is false. MacArthur does not teach that. And if you think he does, then you must not have listened to or read much of him. Faith, however, is not something that is possible to exist without obedience. Faith produces obedience. Faith is not faith unless it is repentant faith. But when using these descriptions and technicalities when not in person to discuss and make sure things are understood, things get confused. By saying faith produces obedience, i will give the first example of the first type of obedience. if faith is real, then what obedience do we immediately see? belief in the Gospel! then as the faith grows and the person is continually sanctified, faith produces more and more obedience to all of the Word of God as the believer grows and is renewed by the Word and wants to obey more, believe more, love more, etc. That is what MacArthur teaches as that is what the Bible says. do you disagree?

The main thing is to always be ready with an answer or say, hmmm, let me look into that. No one knows everything and most skeptics have some of the most ridiculous responses and questions, in which case, don’t be talking down and if you do, apologize and just say, I’ll pray for you to humble yourself and seek honestly, amen

I heard the remark "Believing in God is for dumb people" almost verbatim spoken rather loudly at the workplace by a new employee. He was challenged to explain how a significant minority of PhDs who teach at universities are Christian if they're so dumb? In his case he was intelligent enough to not say that again.

Lol, I hope you gave him a list of all of the significant scientists and scholars who do believe. I would have liked to have been there for that. Even when I didn't believe, I would never call someone stupid for believing it. I also wouldn't say that doesn't exist as a declarative statement, because I couldn't prove that any more than someone saying they believe God exists. My opinion being that we were discussing something in an immaterial existence and sense, which cannot be proven or falsified in a material way, so it seemed rather like arguing if brown or black mustard was better.

I'm a christian in grade 12 currently, and I'm going to be graduating in a few weeks. Afterwards I'll be going to a secular university(the first secular school I've been in since grade 1) and be studying biology no less. People like you two(Melissa and Frank) have helped my confidence be boosted greatly for talking to atheists and others, and I honestly can't thank you enough! Great conversation. I think the biggest takeaway from all these questions is not that we necessarily need a stock answer to talking points, but rather that skeptics will always have counterarguments and Christians ought to have the ability to engage with questions and claims.

Even if there were multiple universes, you still have to admit that the complexity, yet precision, of even one universe from beginning to end still needs an explanation. There's no way that everything about the one universe just happened to fall into place

If the universe fell into place differently, you would be arguing the same thing. The universe isn't fine tuned for life. You can't look at all the good and ignore the bad. God creating the sun that give us cancer isn't a sign that he fine tuned everything. And if you argue things were different before The Fall, then you're defeating your own argument by admitting that currently, the universe isn't as fine-tuned as you're trying to make it out to be.

The problem with "God is Love" is that Christians tend to focus so much on THAT concept. There is more to God than love. God is Just. God is Righteous. God is angry. God is Jealous. The most important thing is that God is right, and we are wrong. Anyone who is saved, is saved by grace alone. Not by their will or choice. The fact that anyone makes it to Heaven shows God is loving.

When I watched" Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel, in the movie, his one work partner said to start with the resurrection too. Very interesting, because its true, without the resurrection, its a house of cards. Thank you for this video!!

Frank is awesome, I've watched many of his lectures online, and he really is doing great work in christian apologetics. The question of evil in the world has always bugged me, and he helped me a lot to understand it better. God's timeless and all-seeing nature + human free will explain it perfectly.

God reveals Himself to whom He wishes. No intellectual debate is going to win someone over to Christ especially if they're hell bent on proving He doesn't exist, but with that said, always, always keep sharing your testimony and let the Holy Spirit do His work.

Hi Melissa, thanks for posting your conversation with Frank. I used to work with a chap who was very much against the "idea" of God. He was persistently combative with many questions about my faith. One day he was quizzing me on the Bible, so I said to him "You need to read the Bible for yourself." So I printed off twelve chapters of the living and active word of God. I gave him the entire book of Ecclesiastes to read and to ponder. The reason I gave him that particular book was that it focuses a lot on how empty and meaningless life is without God. My workmate read it completely and returned to work the next day, saying the author of that book must have been depressed. My purpose of giving him Scripture to him was that God could bring back to his memory the Scriptures he read. Well, that very morning he blurted out in a very theatrical way "Cast your bread upon the water..." I was happy at that. He had remembered Scripture without even knowing it. He has now moved to England but I still keep in contact with him. God bless you!

Hi, I'm new in my walk with our Saviour. One thing I learnt is that, we are saved by Grace through Faith. So the way I understand it is, if by faith we accept that we are saved by Grace, why all the questions? Personal opinion only please understand that. Who are we to question the one and only Lord God? As I'm sure when we get home, we will recieve the answer and realise the truth in "He's way is not our ways and He's thoughtd are not our thoughts". Love in Christ to all my brothers and sisters, from South Africa.

Most of these questions are from non-believers, and we should be prepared to answer them so that they may come to faith (God willing). Of course as believers we should trust God ❤️

Becuz many ppl don't understand. Questions from those who think that Christians are weird or odd or nut cases has no knowledge of God in the first place they also question Christians about why we believe or why go to church or even why be a christian..it all stems to those who dont belong to christ will question or say things that are not true. When a person lives in the dark they r blinded to the truth so questions, insult and other negetive talk happens. As a child of God we do follow him and we can ask questions to Gid so we learn more but for those who do ask questions it's to try and "fight" with a christian becuz they want to truly deep inside want to know God or they want to throw a christian off. Ppl want to have things their way to satisfy their needs and not want to follow God if it makes no sense to their own thinking.

I appreciate a lot of what he said. I think something we must always remember comes from 1 Corinthians 1:18 "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing." And we must remember what's said later in 1 Corinthians 1 "For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we teach to save those who believe." And again later, "The foolishness of God is wiser than men." We mustn't be discouraged when people refuse to listen to us. We can't convince people to Christ with facts and logic. "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot." An important point that I disagree with Frank Turek on is his perspective on free will. I think the Bible is pretty clear in Romans 9 "so then it depends NOT on human will but on God who gives grace." Yes we are called to repent and believe, but we are not capable in ourselves of repenting OR believing. Rather, as said in Ezekial 36 belief and faith, and a heart that can love God are all gifts which God gives us "I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh, and a right spirit I will put within you." If we fall into thinking that mankind is capable in himself of choosing God, we're likely to become discouraged when our best arguments and reasoning fail to convince someone we may care about. We may plant the seed, we may water the crop, but it is God who gives the growth. We cannot remove the heart of stone from our flesh. The spirit of God must do that.

It's so great how he explained the question about why God allows evil in this world. I had a lot of people say this and it seems it's always the biggest stepping stone when talking to non-believers. Really loved the ripple effect, I will defo use this next time the question comes up.

There really isn't a good answer to this problem. God commands us to do good (James 4:17). God commands us to not overlook the hungry. God commands us to carry out punishment when a crime is committed. God will punish us accordingly if we neglect these things. So, why isn't God held to the same standard? If it's moral for us, why is it amoral for God? Even if you argue that God is giving the criminal more time to repent, do we do that? Would you consider it just if law enforcement waited until after a murder was committed to interviene, in the hope that the murderer would change his mind? Do you care about the murderer's free will when you call law enforcement to arrest him? No, of course you don't. So, why is it different with God?

@@zeddicuszorrander3599 Human standards cannot be used to judge God because He is out of man's bounds. Moreover, God, in essence is perfect and good, thus all caprices and human weaknesses is not found or cannot come from Him. Putting God in the same standard as man is similar to using a standard of theology to judge a scientific event. Evil exists because of the many consequences of man's actions in the world, which is usually motivated by selfishness than God's will. Evil was never a part of Creation, even in the beginning.

I like to listen to AskCliffe, though I also watched plenty of Frank Turek. The sheer depth of knowledge all of the knowledgeable apologists or ministers possess immediately shatters the athiestic illusion that there is no evidence about Jesus being who and what he said he was.

I don't think it's on us to prove that God exists. It's on us to give an answer for the reason for the hope that is within us. Not the same two things.

It's actually completely on you since you are the one making the claim. If you claim that benevolent, omnipotent, and omnipresent god exists, then you have to provide evidence for your belief when asked and the only evidence you can provide is faith which is what every religion uses but that doesn't imply truth. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and theists simply don't have any.

Occasionally , i will run into the doctrine of "we must endure until the end to be saved" Christians. What ive found is the ones saying it are the biggest hypocrits :until the end". I will take Gods grace everyday! Great video Melissa.

Triple thumbs up. I've watched Frank Turek on Christian TV in Colorado Springs as well as you tube for more than 5 years love his direct approach as well as answers. I have good discernment through the holy spirit. I've experienced several christian programs, so called prophets, enlightened. I know it's best to experience as much Christian information guided by the holy spirit makes it easier to weigh and measure their opinion. I'm honestly uncomfortable with the narrow minded nonbelievers that Jesus is god and was sent by God as part of the trinity. I believe current humans could not fit our God's knowledge is in their smaller minds. The trinity's self is beautiful and endless, many people believe finite. God is infinite. This was a great conversation and reminds me of a conversation I’ve that I’ve had many times. To sum it up, if God made everything then He is the proprietor of everything and as the proprietor He has proprietary rights to everything, including all of us, and can say how our lives are supposed to be lived and do as He wishes with everything including us.
