Two Former New Agers Debunk the Word of Faith Movement

Many people have started to notice that there's a unique sect within Christianity that is deeply involved with signs, wonders, healing and miracles. Though these beliefs are certainly a part of the Christian life, this is different. There seem to be extreme views forming that are becoming more prominent... and problematic. People commanding the Holy Spirit to do their will, positive confessions, glory realms, physical manifestations of heaven, speaking faith has creative power, that we can do the same things that God can do, that God should ALWAYS heal, and much more. This stems from what's called the Word of Faith Movement, and it would surprise people to know the roots of this movement. In this interview that my friend Steven Bancarz and I did with our good friends at Cultish, we discussed the ties of the metaphysical cults with the formation of this movement. (There is also a part 2 of this video that I will post at a later point.)

Steve has much potential and desire. But that can be hijacked by such spirits as Calvinism. Sadly, Doreen Virtue has fallen for the deception but there's hope for her through prayer to escape the claws of that system. Steve just needs to use caution when making statements such as "the Bible says" or "doesn't say" until he's solidly grounded in The Word. His testimonies are of tremendous value to warn others with details on the whys and hows of the deception of New Age. And I can't leave this without a grateful shout out to Melissa for speaking from her background. She has matured noticeably in the faith since I first saw her, Doreen and Steve years ago.

I used to watch all his videos but he seems to be on hiatus. I hope he is coming back soon. I've been a follower of Jesus for 55 years now but love to see young people who dive into researching these issues. I learned alot from him. I listen to quite a few former New Agers/now believers in part to give me hope regarding a prodigal daughter of mine.

Thanks for addressing this. I suffered thru 10 years (most of my youth) watching my wonderful church be slowly transformed by these cancerous teachings. A place where I was fed, became a place that left me spiritually anemic. Even as a kid, I knew something was off, and fortunately I had enough scripture to help me out of there. Ironically, those folks were very against the New Age, but were blinded by the influence. This was the 1980s, and unfortunately those I knew who did not escape this, have had their theology get worse and worse. For example, they would have rejected Bethel/Bill Johnson, but now they embrace all that nonsense; and that is what happens when you continuously follow that carrot of the next experiential high. Genesis 3 lie regurgitated and repackaged over and over.

A church I went to for 8 years claimed to be against Word of Faith, but in the past year the pastor, his wife, and a bunch of the elders took a Sunday off to attend a Perry Stone conference. This was a year after they partnered with him to teach his "School of the Word" program (in early 2020, but they didn't really teach it until the church opened back up, because of the pandemic). Sermons were never the same. I left for unrelated reasons (wanted to play on the worship team at my friend's church instead of playing for both and juggling schecules), but I started doing research on Stone and was not impressed: Multiple affairs, "numerology" used for "prophecy", and the "ashes of the red heifer" (that one is really weird). But now that I'm on the outside, I remember a bunch of things they taught that I later found out were problematic... like the teaching on Jezebel and Leviathan spirits, and there's pretty much a spirit for every problem out there. They also had a program which was put together primarily by Andrew Wommack that was in use until they picked up Perry Stone's program, and when I did research on Wommack I found out he's just as bad as Kenneth Copeland... possibly worse. Another thing I noticed is never once (that I remember) did they ever do a message specifically about false teachers and calling them out. This is curious, since every book in the New Testament (except Philemon) deals with false teachers at least once...

I've noticed this as well. I had a comment on a previous video mention something along these lines as well, that WoF/NAR teachers distance themselves from things like getting drunk, sexual promiscuity, swearing etc., and make THAT the primary difference between them and New Agers. "We have Jesus and are "moral" and they don't which means we're right." In other words, they want the teachings of New Agers but not their lifestyle. I thought this was an interesting point.

Shortly after becoming a believer I listened to Kenneth and Gloria Copeland. I spent years trying to follow the teachings. I had to finally realize as hard as I tried I couldn’t measure up. Thankfully the Father opened my eyes to the lies they were teaching. Last year I even discovered they were asking for prayer for Gloria’s healing. She had suffered for years with some physical challenges. Sad that she’s had to keep it hidden to avoid judgment from others.

MY REPLY WAS "IS THAT RIGHT? HOW ABOUT WE GO TO THE NEAREST SWIMMING POOL AND SEE YOU WALK ON WATER"!!! NEEDLESS TO SAY HE LOOKED BEFUDDLED AND WALKED AWAY..ONE WEEK LATER HE WAS SACKED FOR THIS HERESY...PRAISE GOD THAT "HE CALLS THOSE THINGS THAT BE NOT AS THEY ARE" NOT MAN WITH THE "NAME IT AND CLAIM IT" NONSENSE...REGARDS TO ALL FROM AUSTRALIA ❤️

I was raised in the church of Unity, which is very new age, and branched out of New thought. Consequently I am very sensitive to these cultish teachings. It really bothers me to hear these unbiblical teachings creeping into the fundamental churches. It is good to know that there are people that are warning believers about the ungodly teachings that are so prevalent now.

I had the craziest experience of actually showing a Word of Faither where in the Bible their theology wasn't adding up to the Truth. They responded "thanks" and moved on with their lies and lives. So frustrating and disappointing! This Word of Faith stuff isn't just confusing to people's faiths, but it actually can draw people away from God and straight into the enemies hands. To not have faith in the Truth. Thank you so much for being bold and exposing this!

I’ll share my experience with WOF. My first wife died of cancer. A Faith church member came into her hospital room, ignoring myself and other family members. She called Maggie “my healed friend “. She was so convinced she was going to be healed that she told us not to say good bye. This was when she was on oxygen and couldn’t speak. She wrote it for us. The result was a loss of a sense of closure. And not one person from that church came to her memorial service.

Like Lambs To The Slaughter by Johanna Michaelson really opened my eyes to the New Age Movement. ..The ancient Hindu practice of Yoga is running rampant in our churches. I very much remember life in the 1940s and the 1950s when New Age teachings were considered "edgy" and spiritually strange. Sadly, the church in America has been significantly transformed by the beguiling snares of the devil. We are witnessing deception in these end times that Jesus spoke of in Matthew chapter 24.

My childhood church was taken over by Word of Faith, as were my parents. I believed it for a while I think when I was younger, and I still think Andrew Wommack is a genuinely good hearted man even though I disagree with his theology. Reading the Bible a lot cured me of Word of Faith, as well as learning more about traditional church teachings, both Orthodoxy & Catholicism. My take-away is the same thing I've found is the root of all the theological issues I notice (and I suspect is the root of any theological issues I may still have): Carnality. It's important to point out that while WoF people definitely rely on "personal revelation", they also definitely use scripture a lot, but they tend to pick verses out of context. Simply using scripture isn't enough, we need to use it with a really deeply earnest intellectual honesty, and never forsake the direction of the Holy Spirit but only in humility. Real humility will absolutely dissolve WoF, because as the saying goes "it isn't thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less", and WoF centers entirely around our personal carnal needs. There is a root of truth in Word of Faith, but it's a small root from a much bigger tree, not the tree itself. God did have his prophets declare things that were carnally important - but I don't think God ever acted in a global sense for purely carnal reasons. He cares about our bodies (he told Elijah to take a nap and eat when he was distraught), but his main concerns are spiritual because he is spiritual. I can't remind myself enough that "the carnal mind is enmity with God", and I must constantly make an effort to renew my mind. Thanks for your efforts, insofar as they help with that!
@BalladOfLooks

I also want to add another thought I've had when dealing with these teachings: there is never enough. You live in one of the richest generations in history, you have microwaves and telephones and refrigerators and air conditioning and access to more information and entertainment than nearly any human who ever lived... you poop in clean water and then declare "oh if only God would do [x] for me, I would be leading a victorious life!" Carnality has *no* end, it is endlessly ravenous. Thankfully, this endless hunger and thirst bears witness of the fruitlessness of every carnal desire. And God offers us a real solution. "Jesus said to her, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.'"

The problem with the WOF/NAR/hyper-Charismatic/New Thought teachings is first and foremost they put man in equality with God. Second, they put Christians above non-Christians and also the concept of "Holy-Spirit" Christians above those seen as "non Holy-Spirit" Christians. Third, they forget that the fruit of the Spirit that comes from someone's life (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) is MUCH more telling of if someone is in Christ than if they can "prophesy, speak in tongues, have word of knowledge and etc." We forget that the reality of a transformed heart is indeed spiritual. It is so heartbreaking because it breeds both pride and pain. Confusion and exhaustion. Comparison and disappointment... A lot of truly bad fruit... John 20:29 "Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

What do you think about a preacher who says when Peter stepped out of the boat, it was an act of disobedience? There are other things he says and does that give me pause (such as preaching a sermon about how to "step into the supernatural" like what does that even mean?), but that one in particular struck me as odd. I heard another message that basically said Paul was sexist. And I'm like, is there this new trend of bashing the apostles unreasonably?

What people do not get 8s that words only have power to hurt or lift up the human mind and heart. Thats it. It does not manifest physical things. God will do for you what you can't. "Save your soul". He won't do for you what you can do for yourself. Like working for your living and doing what He wants us to do.

Is there a way to talk with you Melissa? I am freaking out and just got saved recently but still feel like I am doing something wrong. It's taking some time to do all this bible study and I feel time is very short. How to get in touch?

It seems like he appears once in a while and goes on apologizing for some uncertain things that we have no idea what he talks about. He just became to me very confusing. Seems like he has some internal struggles. His book is absolutely amazing source of information. I love the guy. I should pray for him more.

I’m curious. You guys spoke on how many of these teachers came about from their own revelation from god. And these people basically ordain themselves. But didn’t Paul have revelation from God ? He also declared himself an apostle ? I’ve come across a few that have also posed this to me, and do you have any knowledge to speak on this? I can read the teachings but I’m trying to understand how Paul’s revelation and teachings line up with Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Melissa, do you ever get attacked by men saying that you're not supposed to teach from the Bible... Especially teaching to men? There's a lot of men these days saying that women shouldn't even be speaking in the church. Some of them are a bit brash about it... I have read the verses they talk about but I just don't think it means we can never talk about the Bible scripture or ever talk to men ever about these things. Can you please explain your thoughts on these things?

The inferiority comment really stood out to me because what was Adam and Eves first response...to hide from God. They knew they didn't compare to Him, that they weren't one with Him. They knew Him well enough to anticipate God's anger and or disappointment when they did actually transgress and discover God had made them in His image and "like Him" in ways cuz that's what the serpent honed in on, that they would be like God and to distract and dilude them from what God had given them and shared with them. But they knew the truth that they were not pre or post fall exactly God. Slick deception. Serpent probably figured if he just came out and said that Adam and Eve would become God by eating the fruit of knowledge of Good and evil, it probably wouldn't be bought because A&E spent time in God's presence. But to be LIKE God. That's appealing. Yeah I Wana be more like the person I most admire. Eve saw the fruit and assessed it would give them wisdom through transference through consumption, rather than through conversation with the Lord. She saw the fruit that day as pleasing to the eye rather than God being pleasing to the soul.

At 8:30 It's not a 'right from God' it's a 'measure of faith' that God has given to everyone wether you believe in Him or not. I'm not a fan of Rodney but, he is prophesying according to the measure of faith he has; Romans 12:6. He has faith for Florida not for the rest of the country.

It’s funny, I know someone who went to a WOF church for a decade then went to another church and got saved because they heard the true gospel for the first time. They started reading the Bible and realized that the WOF doesn’t match up well with scriptures. Who woulda thought 🤷‍♂️

I would ask the same thing - though….. what is off about them and Kevin Zaria? My take away is that they don’t promote personal glory They promote wha the scripture already says This conversation here chooses not to bring up much of the scripture that supports the word of faith movement. Kenneth Koplan? That Dollar guy? Sunshine and Lollypops Osteen? Many others…… Yeah - are clowns for all the above reasons
